+Jordan Trivett a load of people attempted to rush through a gate at a football stadium which lead to 96 people being crushed to death

+Ashley Monck It's much more complicated than that. Liverpool fans were restricted to a very small part of Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. The match was against Nottingham Forrest. The police thought there was a possible crushing situation outside due to how many people were trying to get in, so they opened more gates into the stadium. That only led to many people getting crushed inside the stadium instead. 24, 000 people being forced into a small space. People were trying to climb over the fence and escape but the police thought it would interrupt the match so they forced people back over. Eventually the match had to be stopped (6 or 7 minutes into the match). 96 people were crushed to death. Liverpool fans are particularly bitter about this for a few reasons: 1) tabloids reported that people were picking the pockets of dead people and urinating on people. 2) The police's inaction and mishandling of the situation were essentially ignored because rowdy football fans are easy to blame. Working class people with heavy Scouse accents. It's easy to think that they caused this accident because of drunkenness and trying to get into the stadium without tickets. Not the mention Liverpool fans did indeed cause deaths at Heysel Stadium in 1985, four years before Hillsborough.
