Every day half a dozen or so trains carry biomass between the Ports of Liverpool and Tyne and Drax Power Station, near Selby in North Yorkshire. The biomass is in the form of compressed wooden pellets, which are grown in sustainable forests in the United States and northern Europe.
Over the space of four days I observed the Liverpool-Drax biomass train, headcode 6E10/6E09, travelling across the Pennines towards its destination in North Yorkshire. On various days the train was hauled by GB Railfreight's 60056 and 60076, which still sport the orange and black livery of their former owner Colas Rail.
Each train consists of 24 loaded IIA-D biomass bogie hopper wagons. Each wagon has a tare weight of 30 tonnes and gross laiden weight of 102 tonnes, meaning the class 60 hauls a train of just under 2,500 tonnes.
