Just to clarify for all the comments I've seen about "thats dumb, just make more copies" medieval texts were made from scratch: the pages, the binding, the ink, the illustrations, etc. Everything was done by hand, usually by one monk and it was meticulous because it was such a costly and time consuming process, sometimes taking months or even years to finish a single copy. Hence why so few texts exist today irl. Also the maesters probably like the fact that theres so few copies because it means most lords will have to either buy one of three existing copies for a fortune or go to the maesters and beg to read the original copy. So, hence all the outrage from Tyrion and Oberyn and co.

Tyrion did state at one point after the wedding that Joffrey would have been a worse king than Aerys II ever was. At least the last dragon king had been a good man at first and a promising ruler but slid into madness in the following years. Joffrey began his rule by starting a war, so it's not a surprise no one wanted to see him coming of age yet alone reaching adulthood.

Joffrey started his reign by kill Ned Stark, one of the few solidly good characters in the series. He did this to secure the throne and to hurt Sansa and pleased himself by making her stare at her father's head. Killing Ned Stark also ensured the North would revolt and wage war against them. Leading other nobles to cut or reduce ties with the royal family, such as the Tyrells which then resulted in food shortages. Joffrey was a terrible person and would have been a truly terrible king, good thing somebody poisoned him, good riddance.

Tyrion also quips that it's a travesty that the book barely gives Viserys II any attention, noting that while Viserys was only officially a king for 1 year, he was king in all but name for 30, keeping Westeros intact while Daeron wasted his life on the battlefield, and Baelor obsessed so much on spiritual matters that he ignored the here and now (to the point it's believed Viserys poisoned Baelor to stop him starting a religious war with the Old Gods-worshipping North...)

I wonder if the fact that Viserys the 2nd's short and barely remembered reign in lives of four kings (1 or 2 years) is foreshadowing to Joffrey's desth. Having reigned only 1 or 2 years before being poisoned? And doubtlessly being forgotten rather quickly.
@nicksmithnutmilk

It's not really about the lenght of a King's reign . Aegon II's reign lasted for one year and I doubt anybody forgot it 🤣🤣 and Maekar ruled for a very long time yet nobody remembers him . He's a great warrior and he's the father of Egg and that's it
@MegaKnight2012
@MegaKnight2012 2 ай бұрын
Viserys wasn't mentioned as much because he ruled through three previous kings as Hand before a short tenure as the actual king. He had to rule when his brother Aegon III was melancholy, whilst Daeron warred, and whilst Baelor prayed. It's quite likely that Aegon the Unworthy poisoned his father, Viserys II, so he could ascend the Throne. Joffrey refuses to learn from others mistakes, making him a second Aegon the Unworthy. If Joffrey had lived longer, he would have been the Unworthy come again, possible worse. Aegon the Unworthy is identified by Martin as Westeros' Henry VIII. Henry the VIII made a conscious effort to remove legends of people around him to make himself look better, including his elder brother, Arthur, who'd had a round table made by their father so he could be King Arthur come again. Henry VIII even tracked down the grave of the original King Arthur and had it destroyed.

Funny how the book is about 4 kings while Joff fought a war against 4 other kings. Daeron died by betrayal during war... like Robb. Baelor died somewhat mysteriously... like Renly. Aegon was a outright terrible and cruel king that sewed chaos in the realm just cause he could... like Baelon. Viserys II also died mysteriously with rumors that he was poisoned at the hand of his own son... like how Joff was mysteriously poisoned allegedly by his uncle.

I think your parallels are wrong. Baelor was a figure who delved heavily into religion eventually causing his death, could be stannis or tommen Viserys II was killed by his relative like balon Aegon IV had many bastards and caused a war after his death, like Robert Daeron the good was an allegedly good king who married into a foreign southern house and was quite possibly killed by a powerful sorcerer (bloodraven) like renly

@angeliousy well basically a lot of targaryens died in a very convenient way for aegon V to inherit which eventually led to aerys ii. So some speculate that bloodraven was offing all of these targaryens specifically to fulfill the prophecy which says the Prince that was promised will descend from aerys and rhaella. If this is true two of the targaryens ahead of aegon v were the children of baelor breakspear. These children died of the great sickness of 209. If we assume bloodraven used sorcery to create said sickness, that means he also killed daeron who also died from the sickness.

In 2002 I saw the Who play at Jones Beach theater. Pete Townshend was playing a red Stratocaster with a white pick guard. He said there are four of these and then he smashed one over the monitor speaker and then he said now there are only three. And this makes me wonder if one of the writers are in George Martin was at that show.

My favorite part about that scene is Viserys II is not mentioned in book but Tyrion, who is used to being unappreciated sticks up for the man, considering the fact that he ruled on behalf of his nephews for 15 years

Books in general before the Printing press were priceless. Monks and Priests would generally be old school librarians and would dedicate their lives to copying them. A single person spent their whole life making a few hundred copies. Just think about it. This comment that I typed in less than a minute would take me quadruple the amount of time to write down on paper.

Tell Joffrey how much it was worth if he had sold it. Maybe then you get regret. Viserys II only ruled one year as actual King. But he was Hand for Daeron I while he was off trying to conquer Dorne. And he was Hand for Baelor I while he was preoccupied with fasting and walking in serpent pits and naming unsuitable people to different posts. So Viserys actually ruled for awhile, and may have ruled even longer if the rumors are true and he had been poisoned by his own heir who became Aegon the Unworthy.

there were no printing presses either so that rare book was either the original or a copy written by hand by a monk in some monastary

Imagine destroying a book that historically documents the life of four kings that only has four copies in the world instead of reading it to learn how to become a better ruler.

I know the words just make copies, but imagine writing everything in big set (500 pages for one book each). Anyone will go mad if someone ask you to copy the book for EVERYONE TO READ (without a typewriter just ink and feather with no mistakes).
