I bought and sold a lot of these in the late 80's-mid 90's also lots of Darts with the slant 6,there was a strong following in my area for frugal buyers wanting gas mileage and reliability..Those were different than when I had one with a V8 those guys you knew were going to drag race it or a quick street car.. The slant 6 cars even 4 doors sold fast,bought them needing work for next to nothing made about $700-$1000 per slant 6 car,basically every old car I bought back then late 80's -mid 90's thats a nice chunk of change today(roughly $2000 per car) remember I bought these for $150-$300 needing work,usually failed emission testing or leaky/dead transmission fixed for less than $100 aka junkyard trans)... I always liked that style of Valiant always wanted a Black/Black with dog dish hubcaps and a built 340 or 360..Closest was a light green/black looked great 273 4bbl,duel exhaust Valiant Signet.. I wish in 1987 I knew how rare it was and would have kept it! Bought it with a leaking torque conv,replaced it she ran great probably sold it for less than $1500 in 1987 as a young teen,oh well...Even my Chevy buddies who hated Mopars liked the Valiant,they hated Mopars because their SS 396 Chevelles would lose to my 383 4bbl Newport!

Father had a 4 door Valiant with a 4 speed and slant six. No power steering and no power brakes. Only one window would roll down. An interesting ride in 90 degree heat. You really had to concentrate driving it.

Uncle Tony brought me here. As a 62 year old retired auto tech with over 40 years in the industry, I think like he does and approve of the way you do things as well. Very refreshing to see a young bright guy who has a soul and 'gets it'. Have been recommending you and spreading the word about this channel to my car buddies. Thanks for the content, Jamie. I worked on a million of these old cars starting in '79 all the way until '21, and some of the memories are pretty horrific. I had forgotten all about those late '70's ignition switch metal steering column lock outs!!! LOL.... And in CA, all of those cars had lean burn and customers always complained about the crappy lean-miss idle. Keep up the great work.

idk what ppl do..i drove 60's-70's Mopes from '84 till like 2000..never had a single v. regulator issue. i now have a mostly done '70 Fury Gran Coupe w/a de-smogged '77 440. i think i recall 1 time out of several ppl..inc my folks..in the last 60 yrs.. someone losing a volt reg, lol. & all muscle era mopes do corners well. decent tires & a fr. end alignment once every decade is about all that's needed to rly denounce the fiction of cars of that era not cornering well. ok..many ford & chevy cars didnt, lol. if things are taken a lil further..gusseted K, sub frame connectors, big wheel/tires, nice shocks, proper fr end alignment with a lot of pos caster..maybe run the new fangled tubular A arms..it's amazing corner carving time! Cool Valiant! lightest & stiffest of the Mopars of the era & has more patina than the Titanic!
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Жыл бұрын
I don’t know what people do either, but I know what I do - I install “quality” voltage regulators, and then later they die. I have replaced more than I could possibly count in my Mopars and customer cars over the last sixteen years. I really like the way these cars handle - as long as they’ve got a sway bar. There are a lot of nice modifications that can be done beyond that to make them better and better.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Hmm, interesting. I'd use OE ones..even if 50 yrs old. who knows what is inside of newer made ones? (interesting idea to tear apart an original only if already smoked and a newer one & comparo them?) And..always check batt ground connection, has to be good to protect the volt reg. try not to run weak batteries ever. ik..a toughie! a lil solar panel can help with intermittent use cars..for a trickle charger. i swear by AGM batts..a lil pricey, but a fine long term investment. tho..i have heard optimas aint what they used to be. // yaa..fabulous handling, indeed. they go where ya point them..minimum (ok, None. lol) bad manners, predictable. Chrysler Corp did actually use a computer..ancient as it was..to design the geometry & all. ..i think GM at the time just sketched it on a napkin :p Tbars & asymmetrical leafsprings, forever :)

That's a scary looking car. It has the moonshiner feel with those dog dish caps. It looks like the kind of car that you don't even think about messing with. There was a guy in Atlanta way back many moons ago who drove a scruffy old Nova that looked like that. All he ever did was tune that damn car and race people for titles out on the access road behind the airport. He was undefeated for many years. He was a Vietnam vet with a pair of brass ones the size of grapefruits and nothing fazed this dude. Whenever I see a car like this, it reminds me of that guy. It just has that vibe. People are so much more open and friendly about all this stuff today. I came up during the tail end of that old gladiator mentality that was left over from the 50s. Ask any of the old timers you know. They'll probably tell you some great stuff.
@DeadDodgeGarage

Oh yeah. It’s every bit the rugged street warrior in spirit. It doesn’t really get driven that way. Of course the days of “street action” are largely gone, unfortunately… the real fun these days is just getting these cars back on the road. In a world where Nissan Maximas are measurably faster than the average classic… it’s just a different time.

Had more fun with that than all other of my friends cars....plus it was quicker than my friends 63 Nova SS!

Love the Llama Barn Valiant! I would prefer no exhaust in the cabin and maybe fully functioning U joints but I'm picky. Either way, I definitely agree with all that has been done to it including 3 pedals and a stick. Just got an 833OD installed in my Dart Sport and am hoping my mystery 318 will deliver 20 on the road. We'll see. I get that old 2 doors post cars should be cheaper, but when looking for an A body about 5 years ago, anything 2 door hardtop was not 'cheap' - Its amazing how it transformed from a throw-away car to a highly desirable muscle car platform. Even F & M bodies are creeping up in 'value.' I would imagine we can blame auction houses that rhyme with starrett plaxson for that but that's a kind of a different topic. Keep the content coming Jamie!

I heard the pentastar was mounted on the passenger side so that when it was parked curbside, people walking by could identify it as a Chrysler product without having to walk around to the front or back to see the name (I know - the name is on the fender, who knows...?)

Hey Jamie, on the one only pentastar badge,,, I was told several years ago, while at the Mopar Nats, that Chryslers reason for the one badge was to symbolize a signature. The badge was specifically place on the lower portion of one side only. Much like the signature on a letter.

The '67 Valiant is my Favorite year for Vals- I love that grill too. And when UTG was building Slaghammer and converted the 4 door to 2 door I really flipped out. But then Mopar Al took over... and I thought he was doing a good job on it and thought it was kinda kool, although Tony's trucks axle width trak really bugged me, as gasser's really never had that look, and trust me- Gassers were my faves back in the day, and I'm 5 years older than Defeo. PS- I knew the young punk Defeo back in the day, and even street raced him and BEAT him, and let's say that didn't sit well with the hot headed punk back in 1979...but I better shut up now. 😝

Hey DDG! my folks had one of these in the same silver/blueish as this one, but with like a thousand times less rust. Well it gets the mileage I want, and it has most of the sound I like, Did/Do they (Direct Connection) make a "Purple Shaft" cam for the small blocks? I like the way it made easy horsepower and idled like a funny car (sorta, you know) I hate all of the unibody, pretty much anyways. But it IS a muscle car, now anyways. Something modest could be the answer for my "4x4 for a muscle car trade" that I'd like to make. '70 birds are just too over priced. Hey a Satellite, or duster, demon, valiant etc. etc. might just be the answer, but definitely not this rough because the whole reason I want to trade is 'cause I'm badly disabled and now discussing my 11th surgery with my doctors. I'm having massive trouble getting my boot up to the step-bars, not to mention the trouble my dementia afflicted wife of 25 years is having. Looks like a lot of fun!

I used to own a 71 challenget R/T 383.4spd. Did Dodge use the same 4-speed in a 440/Hemi application? Just curious.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Жыл бұрын
There is a special input shaft with 18 splines and matching gearset for the “Hemi” transmission, which was also used behind RB engines in some applications (the ‘68 Charger R/T with 440, for example.) Otherwise, they are essentially the same transmission. The only important external consideration would be which clutch disk is used.

@@DeadDodgeGarage I bought that car in 1979 when I was 13 years old. My dad helped me buy it. 550 bucks! It was totally stock, not a speck of rust on it. It was supposed to be green with a black vinyl top. The kid I bought it from sprayed it flat black and peeled the vinyl top off. The black interior was perfect except for the carpet was shot and the console was gone. I ripped the carpet out of the thing and I remember the floors were absolutely perfect! Shiny F5 green! I wish I still had that car. Thanks for the information about the transmission. I dig your Channel!

Please tell me what is wrong with the Schumacher conversion mounts. I waited 2 years for them to start the business again to get the ones I need and I'm about to do a Slant 6 to LA 360 swap in a 73 B-body. Do you not recomend them? Or is your comment restricted to A-body swap mounts?

I heard the reason for the pentastar emblem only on the passenger side is that. The car, when parked along the curb of a street it could be seen as people walked by. Just Chrysler saving a few cents.

@DeadDodgeGarage

Nice! The iron one is tough. The aluminum units tend to have problems. And I say that as someone who has thoroughly tested the theory…
@flaircraft
@flaircraft Жыл бұрын
I'm also putting an 833OD into my Scamp. I have both iron and aluminum ones and I'm going to use the aluminum one for the weight savings. The problem with the aluminum ones is that the hole in the case for the rear of the countershaft was bored too large at the factory, which allows the countershaft to flop around when you're shifting. This slowly wears out the countershaft hole and eventually the counter-to-main shaft clearance gets too large and the trans goes boom. There are a few ways to fix this. You can bore out the countershaft hole and put in a bushing with the correct clearance, preferably the bushing will be made out of something harder than the original aluminum. You can install some shim stock on the countershaft, of the correct thickness to make it a slight interference fit in the case. Or, you can use some "thick" Loctite/bearing retainer adhesive to lock the end of the countershaft in the case. Or whatever else you can think of to keep the countershaft from flopping around when you shift.

The penta star is on the passenger side because,,,when you park at curbs the passenger side always faces the sidewalk, so people walking by knew it was a Chrysler product!! True story!!
@DeadDodgeGarage

I get it. But I’ve got vehicles here which have had surface rust just like that showing for decades. It seems to take a long, long time for it to progress to actual cancerous rust. The amount of work it would take to strip and prime every paint baked vehicle in the fleet 😬 the nice cars are nice enough. The rest of ‘em can just be what they are.
@syyenergy7

@@DeadDodgeGarage I got 'ya. I'd personally clean them up with white vinegar and a sander and hit them with a marine grade primer that goes over rusty metal. Finish coast (if any ) would be tractor paint. Paint is expensive today. LOADS of work, no doubt. I'd be helping, if I up that way. Down here on North Central Florida.
