I just thought of something when the kids assured is safe to keep the gas heater in such indoor place. It's mostly a very risky move. But, they have been using it on the attic therefore before all pandemonium, foreshadowing the fact since the energy went out, they had a source of warmth in the cold attic. And Laura left the door open on purpose at night to give Grace the opportunity of hypothermia. And then the dog escaped.

This movie reminds me of an "Am I the asshole?" post where this guy who has schizophrenia and his gf got into it because she hid his medication, and she waited until he had a full on panic induced tearful breakdown to say that she hid them as a prank. She then had the audacity to play victim when he yelled at her for doing it, I think it took him like an hr of searching before it got to that point. She kept telling him that she didn't know he couldn't handle a joke. The kicker is, it was the bf who made the "Am I the asshole?" post.

It's interesting how, even though the lady killed the kids and the father, she is easily the most likable character. The father is dating her as a pet project, probably did the same with the kids mom. The kids were unbelievably messed up shitlords who thought it'd be funny to take medication away from a woman who literally depends on it, just cause she fell in love with their father. The ex-cult girl literally did nothing wrong in all honesty, it's not her fault that she was raised in a cult, hell, she saw hundreds of dead bodies at a super young age, she was deeply affected by that alone. Kids are stupid, dad is a bad person, the lady is just tryna be a good person till she snaps.

Not so much. I can empathize with the kids as my father left my mother for another woman when I was four. Fast forward ten years of it affecting my mother, younger brother, and grandparents (they took us in when he abandoned us) and I still hated his mistress. I still had my mother and I'd have done anything to make the other woman miserable. If I had lost her, well, Aiden and Mia would seem kind by comparison of the actions I'd have taken. TL;DR: You can't understand the pain and the thoughts of a child experiencing that unless you, too, have lived it.

Epsilon Xero -So I haven’t gone through this personally, so no real weight behind my own opinion, but driving someone insane for something that is really not their fault seems a bit much. Hating a new member of the family, especially the replacement for a recently deceased mom, makes a lot of sense, but the kids in this movie go far enough that I think it’s basically comeuppance. While the dad basically started the whole thing (unintentionally, but still, a bit more common sense dude), the actions the kids took around someone who was still recovering from insanity seemed pretty inexcusable.

The dad was dumb too, why would you leave your kids alone with someone mentally unstable and why would he suddenly just leave his girlfriend all alone with children that clearly don't like her when he knows she's troubled.
@EpsilonXero
@EpsilonXero 4 жыл бұрын
@@1_atlas_7 That's exactly it, they're kids. Kids have a tendency to not think things through or look at the harm they could be doing. They feel, they act. This film wouldn't work if the kids were adults, unless they were drooling mad. 90+% of adults who watch this movie will conclude that the kids got exactly what they deserved. The other 10% have lived through something very similar.

While I give the kids a lot of blame for their fate, their father was even worse to me. His kids were going through grief over their mother's suicide which traumatized them and only 6 months in he's talking about marrying his new piece? They made it clear that they didn't want to be stuck with his girlfriend and they had strong negative feelings toward her and instead of putting their feelings first (and giving them more time) he insists they go on a trip with him and his girlfriend to the log cabin they used to go to with their mother. The icing on the cake he leaves them alone with a woman they hate and has mental illness. And he gives her access to the gun safe. Genius! But I guess killing them is also a good alternative ending for what they did. That ending singing scene was the best scene in the whole movie filled me with joy that the hero of the story won and made the kids sing in front of their dad with a bullet hole between his eyes. 1) You missed the detail of Aidan drugging Grace's drink. That's how the kids managed to hide all the stuff without her waking up. And yes, they did plan all of it from the very beginning. There is a scene of them sitting in front of the dollhouse and quietly talking before the travel to the cabin, they were clearly discussing their plan back then. And Aidan is also shown to pack up some climbing equipment, that how he managed to fake his hanging later on. 2) Grace didn't shoot Richard because she got angry with him for not listening or whatever. She tried to persuade him that he's already dead and was sure nothing would actually happen - you also didn't mention the fact that she tried to shoot herself first, but the gun misfired. By the way, it's so interesting that every character in the family dies or is about to die from a gunshot. I mean, the filmmakers could choose a different form of suicide for Laura, but they chose the gun. It makes all the deaths feel like one long connected tragedy, like it was somehow Grace's inescapable fate to destroy the whole family. 3) I must say, I have some questions to this characters. The dad's decision to leave is stupid on multiple levels. I mean, the trip to the cabin takes 5-6 hours, if the roads are clean. So, his plan was to drive 5-6 hours to the cabin, then, the very next day, 5-6 hours back home, then, in a few days, 5-6 hours back to the cabin, and then, after Christmas, 5-6 more hours back home? I know that people in US have a thing for cars and driving, but isn't that exhausting? And the kids decisions are stupid too. I'm not even talking about the whole gaslighting idea, but why don't they stop the whole thing after Grace becomes physically dangerous, hitting Mia? That's the moment they should've realized they are stuck with a crazy lady, who NEEDS her medication. And why didn't they steal the gun from her even after they had seen it? Also, they are worried that she will freeze to death when she seats outside for too long, and that's what makes them tell her the truth. But why didn't they do it when she decided to walk to a town, wearing no outer clothing but a blanket? She totally could have died at that point. Also, after they realize she's dangerous, why do they hide in the attic that has no locking door? Their room has one, and the basement has this secret area where they hid all the stuff, why not go there? And please don't say they're just kids. According to the obituary, Aidan is 17. He should have known better.

The real villain is the dad. He knew how traumatized and hurt his kids were and also knew his girlfriend was mentally unstable and traumatized. He knew that the kids blamed the girlfriend for their mom taking her own life. We gotta remember theyre kids - that said they aren’t going to understand things as an adult would. That said, neither the kids or Grace were in the right mental state to be left ALONE in a lodge in the middle of nowhere.

Actually, the argument of "they're kids" doesn't hold up since children can learn right from wrong at the age of five and onwards, and can understand concepts such as death, torture, and abuse, and the implications of what they entail. While the father shouldn't have left all three together, it's ultimately the fault of the children for going through with their premeditated attempt at causing their step mother to commit suicide. One of the reasons why we shouldn't underestimate how much children do understand about the seriousness of their actions, is because it does lead to real world nightmares. Such as the Jamie Bulger Killers who at the age of ten, premeditated a kidnapping of a two year old, and then proceeded to sexually torture and finally murder them, only being caught because their attempts at hiding their wrong doings by dumping the body on a train track lead to an investigation. They revealed in later interviews that they fully understood what they did and why they did so, even if one of them was utterly unrepentant of their actions.

Why does everyone think the dad was a psychologist? At the beginning of the movie, the kids ask about Grace being apart of their dad’s book. He was a writer and met her while researching cults. Also, I’m pretty positive he didn’t know she was medicated. There is a scene in the lodge where he enters their room while Grace is taking her pills and she hides them behind her back without him noticing. She was never his patient. Don’t know how that idea came about. Anyway, the kids were little sociopaths that shouldn’t of touched her medication in the first place. I felt no sympathy for them in the end.

I think the PTSD and the trauma was resurfaced by the children - who were also grieving due to their mother's suicide. It was definitely just a mess and everyone needed mental health help. The ex-wife kills herself because she couldn't be with her husband even though she had her kids (who loved her) to think of, selfish. The husband is to absorbed in his own little world to see what is happening around him to those he loves, selfish. The kids are actual psychos (products of 2 of the worst parents) who are willing to kill an animal to fuck with the wellbeing of a person. Yea I have to agree with you all here. Dad knew the kids didn't like her and he never saw his children really interact with her. He also didn't find it odd that he had not heard from the fiance and kids in days. Dad was an idiot.

@@crisslambert6593 She tried everything she could to get close to those brats but they thought hiding her pills (which suppress that incident in passed) would be funny, then they started talking about sins and being dead. they know about her passed her almost being killed with all those people but that isn't the best part they left the tiny dog outside in FREEZING cold and which caused it's death. They maybe good kids that is a evil action they knew what they were doing and they got what they deserved. Thanks for posting, might check it out seems pretty tense. Lesson I learned is all the characters aside from Grace are pretty shitty, inconsiderate or bad people/parents. Grace getting a pass because of her twisted past and she genuinely tried until she broke. So I guess its really just that family thats shitty. Shitty mom for killing herself and dong it there of all places, dad is using Grace as means to an end and the children pretty much got exactly what they asked for. Guess the mom got what she wanted, they're all together in the end lol

Yeah. The comment section can go off for days about how terrible the kids were, but ultimately they're kids. Traumatized kids. They thought they'd just gaslight the unstable lady until she went the kind of "crazy" that happens in cartoons; ultra weird, but harmless. Probably end up sitting in a corner, rocking back and forth, telling everyone she's Napoleon and blowing raspberries all day. Then she'd get shipped off to the loony bin, and they can have their dad back. We, as adults, knew that was a bad plan, but they're young enough that they probably didn't foresee what happened as a possibility. It was wrong of them to try to drive her bonkers, yes, but at least they had a motivation that made sense in the mind of a child. Now the dad, on the other hand, completely to blame in the movie. "Let me just allow this unstable ex-cult member, whom my kids have never met and most likely see as the reason their mother killed herself, to take said kids to an isolated cabin in the woods completely unsupervised for a few days. And hey, why not give her a gun to spice things up?" You don't have to be a psychologist (like the father supposedly is) to know that this is an awful idea. In fact, it's such a bad idea I wouldn't be surprised if the father had lived and rescued the kids the police wouldn't bring the father up on charges of negligence or child endangerment. Let's be real, if the dad had lived those kids would have gotten taken away from him once authorities realized what the circumstances were like, and who put those circumstances together. The kids have a share of the blame, but the vast majority of it goes to the dad. The welfare of your children come before your "mentally deranged girl" fetish, pops.
