Well, many of the "Founders" were land speculators, such as Washington and Jefferson and in generations after them. They "bought" land from some "chief" who had no authority to sell it and didn't understand the concept of owning land, and then they sold it to settlers. The settlers were generally just looking for a piece of land to grow food on. The Enclosures in England in the 1600's caused many small villagers to lose their bit of commons (where the poor people grew food; they had common gardens) so the English poor were left with nothing but starvation or immigration to America. Other settlers from Europe were also looking for a way to survive. So I don't blame them. ( I have a B.A. in Native American Studies and am Shawnee/Cherokee.)
