If you are still in the uk, go to a bookstore and have a look at the horrible history series, they are written for kids but are 100% factual and very fun to read. They cover all sorts of eras,/timelines, events, monarchy etc.

Just FYI as a Londoner, whilst obviously slavery and the commonality of torture & mistreatment of prisoners is a very dark & shameful part of our history, we were not “the originators”. Slavery, shackles, torture devices etc have been around for millennia in pretty much every country and culture on earth going back to the days of the ancient Egyptians, who built their empires on the backs of slaves and had horrific torture methods to punish criminals & enemies. Obviously that doesn’t make any of it right and it’s still barbaric, but I really don’t think it’s fair to paint Britain as the originator of it. Britain wasn’t even the originator of the transatlantic slave trade - that was the Portuguese, although our later participation and profiteering off it is extremely shameful and criminal. Britain was also the country who spent 40% of its GDP and countless naval ships & soldier’s lives stamping out the slave trade later.

I agree with everything you said. BUT - the Brits colonized the world (“The sun never sets on the British Empire”). Colonization is horrific and we are still tryna clean that up. The Americans did the same on our continent. Really, it’s Human History. We are capable of amazing things as a species but also horrific, parasitic things. I hope we learn before it’s too late.

I can do my family history back to 1500 in most branches, 1257 in one, not a single person was involved in slavery in my family, this will be the same for probably most people in the UK today. Some facts conveniently missed out. The slave traders from the UK traded goods with black African slavers it's were they mainly got the slaves from. Of the 9 - 11 million slaves taken form Africa half were taken by the Portuguese. The Uk something like 2.6 million over 300 years. The UK alone ended slavery in all it's empire, effectively the world, other countries reluctantly followed. This cost a huge amount and in money and lives. The biggest slavers the world as ever known are in fact African and middle east countries. Anybody trying to claim Britain was the only slaver traders to ever existed will not go down very well.

In England we still some times refer to being in prison as being “ In The clink “ and that water by Camden Lock is a canal , in other words a hand dug water way . London is actually built on many rivers ( that still run under the streets ) a famous one is “ The fleet “ which runs under Fleet Street . But it was a “posh” roast different to the normal carvery most of us have Toby carvery is the biggest national chain and they charge around £7 each. But as a national chain, some of their pubs are awesome and some are terrible. Most pubs will do a Sunday carvery where you pay at the bar, get given a small ticket which you then go to the carving counter, give the chef the ticket to show you’ve paid and tell him which of the meats on offer you’d like and he slices and plates it, then gives you the plate and you help yourself to the sides buffet style. Pub roasts are ordered from a menu and served by staff to your table. But mosts Brits will tell you their moms Sunday dinners beat any pub food, would be awesome to see you link up with some Brits and be given a proper home cooked Sunday dinner

The pilgrims actually started their journey from exile in the Netherlands, but they boarded the _Mayflower_ in London and called in at Southampton on the south coast to pick up supplies etc. Plymouth was the last place they called at before departing across the Atlantic. There's an old riverside pub called The Mayflower in the Rotherhithe district of London which is supposedly where the ship started its journey (being named after it years later).

Slave ships didn't come from Africa. Rival African kingdoms capture enemies and would sell them to various European powers. They would transport them to the Americas and sell them to buyers. It was called the triangular trade. You can visit places like the London docklands museum and learn about them with all due respect.

My grandfather was in the workhouse. So...yeah, unpaid forced labour was a thing. So, I'm not taking b.ame for what the rich, and the royals, did...and do. But here's a fun fact. The first police force I the world was Thames River Police. It was set up to defend slave ships docked in London from the ordinary Londoners. True. The people hated slavery because that's what the rich would do to us and did every chance they got. So ordinary londorers would throw bottles and bricks at the ships crews.

You maybe need to brush up on your history. The UK wasn't the sole inventor of instruments of torture, neither was England the major exponent of the slave trade. Countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Belgium invented many instruments of torture and restraint systems. These countries between them invented thumb-screws, The Rack, Muzzles, Leg Irons, whips, stocks, shackles, and iron collars. The restraint systems used to enslave captured slaves predominantly came from Portugal and Spain, by far the biggest players in the slave trade. England's role was more confined to transportation - essentially because they had the ships and the trade routes - slavery was never a big thing in England itself, but was an issue within it's colonies. This was true in every European Empire.

If the African slave traders had not sold their slaves to the European slave traders there would have been no Atalantic slave trade. A European boat with a crew would buy a 1,000 slaves, load on the ship and sail to the Americas. Never would have happened WITHOUT the black African slave traders.

London was not the originator of torturous things, or slavery, not by a long shot. Slavery was practiced by the Phoenicians, a very early civilisation from the Levant at the east end of the Mediterranean. Later, The story of Joseph and his coat of many colours, in the Old Testament remember, tells how he was sold into slavery by his brothers! The Bible also recounts the description of the Crucifixion which was a torturous death. And the some Roman Emperors organised terrible things to kill people in the Coliseums, and Aztecs did dreadful things playing football with peoples heads, the Japanese did torture and so it goes on and on. At the other end of the subject, England WAS at the forefront of the abolition of slavery, long before the US stopped it.

Also while technically it was illegal to have slaves in the British isles you actually did have adverts about slaves who were bought with their by their owners who had run away. It would be the equivalent of saying because murder is illegal it wasn't happening. I recommend you watch a video by a lady called jdraper called " Slavery for white people". She is an English lady and quite well versed as on the subject. Also I may add these places like the British Carribbean were also considered the United Kingdom up until independence in the sixties. My grandparents passport literally says the United Kingdom on them. Then it states the island they are from on the bottom.

Camden town being touristy. Lol Camden used to be a run down area in the 1970s Then in the 1980s like a lot of run down areas in London, Artists moved into the area. From photographers painters designers and musicians moved in to Camden. Then a little knownl Designer moved into Camden and started to build her world wide empire there. That designer was called Vivian Westwood. She started out in a shop selling tee shirts with printed political slogans on them and then grew from there. This is what put Camden on the tourist map! You also mentioned the "Mayflower" another little known fact by the American people. The Mayflower is remembered as leaving Plymouth to sail to the USA or New World as it was known back in the day. This is actually factually wrong. The Mayflower and its crew originally came from a sea side town in Essex England. That town actually built the Mayflower the Crew all lived there including the Captain of the Mayflower who undertook that voyage to the New World. That town was actually Harwich on the North Essex coast

I was just saying that a lot of people are not leading with empathy by his one comment that was made when he was emotionally feeling a bit distressed. I just wanted to acknowledge that. I don’t think the point was about who started chattel slavery. It was a real moment and real feelings he was having in the moment. And I stand by my comment.
