Though a very uncommon thing, It's certainly not unheard of that women sometimes manned stagecoaches. Here on the San Francisco Peninsula, I came across a female stagecoach driver, in the archives.

I imagine the reversal happened during film editing. Since Cannonball and hubby are looking to our left it makes better sense visually for the Lone Ranger and Tonto to be riding away to the left. Flipping the film was easier/cheaper than shooting the scene over.
