The Ranger calls the young man his nephew. 5:07 At the mine he introduces the young man as a friend. 11:51

Dan was his nephew and also the father of the Green Hornet Britt Reid. Britt was LR's great nephew. LR often introduced Dan as "my friend".

Probably so outlaws wouldn't be tempted to use him as a hostage I mean if they knew and it ended up being a choice of useing his friend tonto or useing his nephew dad they'd pick dad everytime plus in tv series butch Cavendish is still alive captured true but alive and he's the reason he became the lone ranger so thinking it's just out of wanting to try to keep his nephew super safe or as safe as possible anyway

He called him his friend because he didn't want people to figure out who he was his nephew is Dan Reed his name is John Reid and his great nephew is Britt Reid of The Green Hornet

Too bad they never followed up with the story of Dan Reid. The recent Green Hornet movie was a travesty. It is too bad they never made a movie about the transition to the Green Hornet. The old tv series was much more respectful but failed to mention the relationship. It is easy to imagine Dan Reid taking on the mantel of the Lone Ranger or how he becomes a newspaper magnate.
