Hey now that is an awesome observation, & fascinating idea! It would have been a happier ending in that case. As opposed to the gut punch they were going for. But that alternative could have shown Corry riding home, memory chip in hand and pondering how 'human' is the being he fell in love with if he can transfer her into a fresh body? Which also makes for interesting sci-fi.

You just hit a raw nerve opening up an old wound. My darling young ex girlfriend “saved” me so many times in many different ways. She was then in a car accident damaging her brain and she became mentally ill. But i could not “save” her. When she realized she was not mentally well, she committed suicide by lying on the train tracks on nov 11, 1999. True, i never got over it. 😢 Your perception and description of the situation of that twilight zone episode was so accurate. God bless you and good luck with your journey. ✌️

Serling was a prolific writer. The stories just came out of him like a fire hose. He would just sit at the typewriter and go non-stop. Such a talent. The tenor of his writing changed after his stint in Korea. It became more focused on the human condition and social issues, as one would expect and as is evidenced by his stories on The Twilight Zone. The pacing of this episode is perfect to accommodate the time slot.

One of my top ten Twilight Zones with a great performance from Jack Warden (be sure to watch his performance in the underrated 'Twelve Angry Men). The opening monologue with Warden's character thinking to himself is superb...fine writing by Rod Serling and Warden delivers it in a heart-felt way. It's amazing sometimes how Serling could pack so much into a half hour show. Ask yourself what you were feeling and thinking during the episode and after...The Twilight Zone was one of the few shows that really made you think about the accepted views of the culture we live in and how maybe we should question them. By the way, interestingly enough, Warden died 46 years after this aired which was the exact same length of his sentence in this episode...very Twilight Zoneish if you ask me.

Actually, the movie, Twelve Angry Men is one of my all-time favorite movies too. Probably for the same reasons it's one of your favorites...An outstanding directional debut by Sidney Lumet who had the good fortune to have some of New York's best theatre talent at the time in the movie. Getting back to Jack Warden as Juror #7, I thought his scene with Henry Fonda in the washroom was a brilliant piece of acting. There's a scene where Warden flips his cigarette into the air while making a point to Fonda's character. I thought it was a perfect metaphor for the flippant nature of his character and the shallowness of his approach to life. @@FeverDreamlandTheater

Agree with all of that, though I don't think 12 is underrated by anyone. Interesting fact: Lumet gradually dropped the camera angle throughout the film to make it feel more claustrophobic.

In my view, Anthony, seeing the blown away face after Allenby destroys "Alicia" is one of the greatest shock sequences of any _Twilight Zone_ episode. Corry had started to argue about taking "her" back to Earth with them, but Allenby decided to use the quickest and most effective way possible to win the debate and head for home. An argument can be made that that scene is even more of a shocker than the reveals in "The Masks" and "Eye of the Beholder", because in those there was some anticipation of what was to come--in the former we know that the masks are hideous and the heirs are forced to wear them by a dying patriarch who hates their guts, so we have an inkling of what's going to happen to them when the clock strikes midnight, while in the latter any observant viewer the way the faces of the doctors and nurses always being hidden in darkness or turned away from the camera is sufficient reason to think that something is afoot (yes, the heavily bandaged head of the patient's eyes being initially sensitive to light as the bandages are removed is a slight-of-hand that partially works in keeping the level of suspense in play, but never entirely with the shadowy hospital staff lurking around her). Contrast that with the graphic deprogramming of "Alicia". Like Corry, as the episode proceeds viewers are counted on to gradually accept that "she's" somehow become human, at least to the extent that "she's" begun to simulate emotion, which superficially appears to humanizer "her". What makes Allenby's solution more shocking than the other two episodes mentioned is that there could be more "humane" ways to deactivate "Alicia" than shooting off "her" face, and ones that wouldn't have been so disturbing, such has "her" having a control panel mounted on "her" back that could easily shut off the robot. But gunshot to the face was the _money shot_ Rod wanted, and it works beautifully to drive home the point: Time to come home, Corry, the exile is over, the fantasy is over! So this is how the convicted are treated in 2046? Sorry, but being thrown alone upon a distant asteroid with no ability to communicate with anyone is hardly progress in penology, but a huge step backward, as this sort of solitary confinement definitely qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment. As for human-droid "relationships", all are as illusory as the one in "The Lonely". If Corry can't get over "Alicia", he needs to seek counseling when he gets back to Earth. Overall, a solid episode, as you state, and with a memorably poignant stargazing scene. *4.5 out of 5 point blank to the face reality checks* Side note: Those "space helmets" look like football helmets from a hundred years ago. Silly. It looks like _Star Trek_ learned from the _TZ_ mistake and dispensed altogether with the old fashioned helmets. (By the way, the same helmets also appeared in "The Little People", though a realistic one was used for Season Four's "The Parallel".)
@FeverDreamlandTheater
@FeverDreamlandTheater 2 жыл бұрын
hey Galantski! Ah yes, football helmets, true. LoL I'm so not a sports guy at all. You made some excellent points, Allenby's solution is a lot more shocking than the other two episodes you noted - and come to think of it there must have been a less violent way to deactivate Alicia. But then as you mentioned, we'd lose that shock value and the money shot. On a side note, I think there was a TNG episode were Data was shut off simply with a button push. Anyway, Thanks as always for the watch & comment my friend! Have a great week ahead.
@Galantski
@Galantski 2 жыл бұрын
@@FeverDreamlandTheater Ah, yes, the Data deactivation method...why not the same for Alicia, right Your comment rought some other things to mind, Anthony. First, I thought about remote controls to operate the robots when needed. I checked the Wikipedia page on remote controls and was a bit surprised to learn that the first ones can be traced back to the late 1800's, where the first ones were developed to detonate weapons. In the first part of the 20th century they were developed for use with high end radios, and in the 1950's three companies had their own versions. So, by the time "The Lonely" first aired in November 1959 they would have been readily know about, if not yet an entertainment fixture in every home. It would be expected that by 2046 something along those lines would be expected for a sophisticated electronic contraption like Alicia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_control But putting that aside, let's consider something far less in the category of "what if" such as a remote control, and that's the almost definite inclusion of an owner's manual tucked away in the crate with the bot. However, we don't see a manual, just a small scarp of paper with the sketchiest of info about Corry's new "companion". Here, I'm calling Serling's bluff; even though we don't see one, there has to be a manual. I think we don't see it because Rod was writing a script for a half-hour show. I maintain that there _must_ be one with basic operating instructions, not to mention a section titled *Troubleshooting.* Really, how could there *_not_* be one? I'm not buying that everything in that future scenario would be perfect and never need repairs or tinkering. And the possibility of a robot suddenly running amok, requiring immediate emergency measures to stop it from going on a full scale rampage would be of utmost importance to bring under control ASAP. In other words, there would be built-in fixes far less psychologically drastic than the Allenby Solution.

Gotta remember they were fighting the clock big time and there was nothing to debate--they couldn't take on extra weight. Allenby made a wise, command decision--he had to be cruel to be kind.

@@nicholasschroeder3678 Congratulations, Nicholas, you've just won today's Golden Electrode Award for adding to the overall horror and creepy irony of the episode. And if I could add a detail, what if the malfunction occurred just after he really started to bond with the gynoid. He tries futilely to repair it, but now that it sits in a corner of his shack, every time he looks at the lifelike/lifeless face it seems to mock him. After a while this causes Corry to snap and ends up smashing the gynoid's artificial countenance to where all that's left are the wires and electrodes and faceless eyes. Just then, he hears the supply ship landing and tells Allenby what he did, but he's informed that that's no big deal, because Allenby was prepared to shoot off its face anyway. Anyway, Corry, enjoy your ride home.

I couldn't really understand the character's gripe though. I mean isn't delivering supplies his job? If he's not dropping off supplies to the prison asteroids then what is he doing? These guys strike me as space truckers. If they're not delivering to convicts they're probably delivering to colonists. It makes no sense why he'd be out there if delivering shit in a spaceship wasn't his regular job.
@watchwaddle
@watchwaddle Жыл бұрын
@@TheKennethECarper - Good point, however, have you ever seen Ghostbuster 2 (1989) There’s a line in that movie after a ghost montage when a police chief says there’s so many calls, he’s short handed then says, “I’ve got meter maids chasing ghosts all over mid town.” That’s not really there job is it? Well… it kind of is. They’re public servants, but also, no. They’ve got their jobs to do. I view this as Ted Knight being a space trucker to moon colonies that probably takes a few days. But since this mission came into effect, they had no one else (for budget reasons) to take on that job. Hence relying on average truckers. Maybe I’m thinking too deeply about it, but I’ve experienced that at my job. It’s easy for higher ups to give us other jobs to do because they’re too cheap to get outside help. And having a family to support, I can’t just say no or quit. It’s not that easy. Or maybe Ted was just being a grumpy jerk. Who knows. I guess it’s up to an individual to feel how he feels.

Old science fiction from the late 1950s often used stock footage of USAF missiles being launched, played in reverse , as a spacecraft landing. As a child I thought that looked really stupid. Warden was wonderful in " 12 Angry Men " in 1957. Talk about solitary confinement! This episode expresses the fact that love is a state of mind, no matter who or what the recipient is.

Got to love how they pronounce "robots" in those old films 😜 this was a great episode, I like how she was becoming more human as the show progressed, filling the void in his life. Felt bad for the fembot but hey it snapped him out of it 😜 Great video 💯💯💯

A great episode. I've always wondered do Corey and the 'robot' have intimate relations?

I would assume so. I think the story would have tackled that if it was made more recently. There was an episode of Black Mirror that went into that territory.

Jean Marsh was the creator and star of the classic show "Upstairs, Downstairs." It didn't have the production values of "Downton Abbey," but it was a great show anyway.

I would have given this episode a 5 out of 5. It was a masterpiece. They don’t make any deep stories like this anymore. 😢

With this episode, we have a glimpse into our future. I can totally see human robots that are controlled by AI that will be extremely human like. Lonely people will be able to order a companion in 10 to 20 years from now. Men will have a recreation of Marilyn Monroe, and women will get their Brad Pitt. The choices will be unlimited, and the fantasy will go wild. Will this be good for our society? I think not. I can see this as a new form of idolatry.

People, lots of people, do the same thing with their pets. Loneliness bites and people will do nearly anything to combat it.

Fucking heartbreaking!! It could have been worse, I thought the ship was going to leave her alive but behind on that planet for eternity. That would have been too traumatic. Btw I don't think Corey saw Alicia as a reflection of himself at all. How would he have fallen in love with her if that were the case?
