You can just climb to the signal hill (where you see the antenna from your house) and then turn your back to the cliff and you need to walk until you get to the edge of the map. Then turn left and you'll see a cave and that cave will lead you to the lower dam and eventually to the Mystery Lake.

If you get to a waterfall you've gone too far. Walking toward the cave from Signal Hill, you should have the mountains on your right. If you miss the opening of the cave, which is up a small hill that doesn't look climbable but is, the first major landmark you're going to run into is a waterfall. Keep the rocks on your left as you walk back, hugging the wall, and you'll find it. I believe there's either a small outcropping of rocks or a fallen tree right near the area of the cave. Once you find it, spray paint the crap out of that area so you'll be able to locate it easier next time.
