The Long Dark - Interloper 500 - Part 34

After surviving The Long Dark for 500 Days on Stalker mode...it's time to try the same on Interloper. There will be no firearms, looted hatchets or knives. We must make our own defenses and tools in order to survive this self-imposed challenge. It's time to see if we achieve victory or die a horrible death like everyone else on Great Bear Island.

The Long Dark Interloper is the hardest mode in Sandbox mode (The other difficulties are Pilgrim, Voyager and Stalker). The game describes that this mode is "For expert players looking for the ultimate wilderness Survival challenge."
In The Long Dark Interloper difficulty, you start with the most minimal resources, supplies are very scarce and Wildlife is rare, but it is more dangerous
- Interloper was a new game difficulty, introduced in v.364.
- The world becomes more hostile to you as you play. Global temperature drops, wildlife and fuel resources become more scarce, and Blizzards become more frequent.
- Apart from the Hacksaw and Hammer, which spawn rarely in the world, you need to create all your own improvised tools (ex. Hatchets, Knives, etc.).
- The best Clothing and Food items do not spawn.
- Wolves are more rare, but also more deadly.
- Wildlife becomes more rare over time.
- There are no firearms in the world.

You don't have to worry about your hides degrading. They only degrade during the curing process but then their condition stays fixed permanently.

Per the Wiki, Fresh Hides and Guts decay their condition over time, becoming destroyed upon reaching 0% Condition ("Ruined"). Curing items fully prevents them from further decaying condition.

you cant get food poisioning at cooking 5 so u can eat ruined food.

True. I can't remember if it applies retroactively to meat I cooked at lesser levels though... does it?

@@Accurize2 im 99% sure its fine. Im 99.9% sure i have seen other creators eat meat they made when under lvl5 and i think i have aswell.

You can still get food poisoning at level five cooking but only from eating raw meat or fish. Once you reach level five all cooked meat and fish, regardless of when it was cooked, and all other food regardless of condition is safe to eat.

IIRC the book you left up at the tower in this area was a sewing primer. i know you have a ton of books at the cabin already, but i'm like 99% sure you just finished the only sewing primer book you had. so, if you are worried about increasing your sewing skill before a bear skin repair, getting that book and reading it might be helpful. i don't know if others pointed this out but i believe hides and guts and saplings don't deteriorate in condition after they have been cured. the loss of condition was from before/during the curing process, and now that they are finished curing that condition number will stay the same. also, remember you went into forlorn muskeg to grab the mushrooms, so all the loot spawned. maybe if you're looking for something else to do looting that region would be good to do sooner than later before everything despawns? don't sell yourself short on the 500 days. i have faith :) you can do it!

I have been trying to avoid regions until I was ready to fully loot them for that reason…but the mushrooms were a must. I will go back soon and loot though. Luckily that region is pretty sparse. You don't have to put pelts and hides outside. They don't degrade after they have been cured.

on the wolf... what's your aversion to building a fire next to it? maybe cooking a chunk of meat while cutting the rest of it up? all the trouble walking back and forth over 2 trips seems like a ton of hassle.

In those extreme cold temps I’d have to use coal to get the temp above zero. Plus there is a good chance with the frequency of storms the wind with snuff it out and sacrifice all the fuel added. Not worth the risk.

I've never really played interloper but man, the persistently colder temperature looks like a big challenge to overcome. You can barely spend time outside even with the warmest gear.

You don't get minus 46 Celsius very often but yes it is considerably and consistently colder in interloper. And cold saps your condition faster than any of your other "wheels". What I heard from another player early on in my playing and now understand is that you have to use your health as another "asset" in interloper. You are going to lose health pretty much everyday you go outside in interloper. And you have to go outside, right? So plan accordingly. Know how much health you recover while sleeping. Know how to boost your recovery with teas. If you're moving a long distance, across a map or to another region, etc, plan where there are interiors that you can warm up in. Have plenty of fuel to make fires if you can't get indoors. Hoard coal. Use hot teas to increase the time before your temp wheel goes red. Use that new thermos. Oh, and try not to go outside when it's minus 46 Celsius. The best clothes and strategies aren't going to overcome that.

I know it's useless info for you now, with being level 5 cooking. But for anyone else that wants to level cooking you can take a bag of meat into a car or pickup truck and harvest without the animation and instead does the old version with the circle.

hang on.. you took the motorcycle out? sooo is there a new video coming? btw in case you forgot: you entered forlong so when the weather is right you should plan a trip to go there and loot there. pretty weird that the furs deteriate... i mean sapplings? yeah okay but the pelts? doesnt really makes sense for me. but im no huntsman so what do i know... those wolves really should do something about their energy drink addiction... they are running like crazy... maybe the bear didnt clean up his cave so he got grounded? so he cant come out to play... keep up the great work

When you are going to sleep you don't need to use a bandage on a sprained ankle for it to heal. It will heal on it's own.

Probably once the weather breaks a bit here. I really want to take the T120 down to the Athens, Ohio area and ride the Ohio Dragon Tail and Triple Nickle with the cameras. Those are some fun roads.

It has an interesting and unique premise for sure and for it having procedurally generated worlds, it does not look so. Hope some of the earlier bugs have been chased out and look forward to your thoughts on it. p.s. congrats on achieving "A Year in the Dark" - The highlight was preparing to skin a bear that was actually only sleeping. @@Jacob_CrowthorneI think he’s just playing it more as a strategy game and less of an emotional thriller! It’s probably true that a lot of the adrenaline from constant fear of death has faded, but that makes for a lot more calming gameplay than just constant death imo
