The Long-Term Effects of Nuclear Testing in Nevada

From 1951 to 1992, the Nevada desert was home to one of America's largest nuclear weapons testing sites. At the height of the cold war with Russia (USSR), the US government was more concerned with developing the most destructive devices possible than with the safety of the local population. Locals who lived nearby during that time recount the effects of nuclear fallout.

My dad was an on site participant, he died of stomach cancer at 57, no retirement for him. He was at Mercury from 1951-53 during above ground tests. My sister died in 1963 from what they thought was encephalitis, but her death certificate had a big ? on it? Makes me wonder. I cannot figure out how scientists did not realize that the dust may blow one direction and the next day blow another direction with the same radiation. It sickens me.

I spoke with an American who didn't even they tested devices in Nevada, he thought the tests were don't in the south Pacific, well yeah some were. But for each device detonated in the south Pacific, 13 devices were detonated in Nevada in comparrison. 13:1. Over 900 tests done underground in one state alone. Ten states had devices tested some being geographical resource explosions. People have no idea what was done in their own backyard.

Lol just so we are all clear you spoke to an "American"... strange addition to your story but hey most people don't learn about stuff like that, and its usually not taught in schools, so its understandable that a general person wouldn't have a clue about what nuclear weapons are or where they are tested....most of the test sites are blocked off to people anyways so even say they happened to stumble in the area of a test site they would be greeted with barbed wire and gaurds....

@@clappinmonkey0944 nobody would ever accidentally wander off into a nuclear test site here in Nevada (well, with GPS anyways). There are few roads and military ones are well marked so you'd have to go looking for it to try and get there.

My Mom and step dad moved to Las Vegas about 7 years ago. Both became ill with strange sickness that looked like radiation poisoning. They both passed away in the last 2 years. The government never cared about us, and certainly isnt our friend. They basically have ruined the ability to inhabit most of the US

I got bad news for you, it’s still there, it doesn’t just disappear. That’s why they say Chernobyl will be inhabitable for at least another century, and that was a lot less radiation.

My Mom grew up in Las Vegas, NV in the 1950s and they tested right outside of Las Vegas when she was a child. Her school was in the outskirts of town and they would take all of the kids from the school and have them watch the mushroom clouds going off in the distance with no concern at all about safety. Las Vegas in the 50s considered the mushroom clouds to be another tourist attraction. My father and mother met in Las Vegas while they were both working on Fremont Street, then got married at a Catholic Church. Everyone in my family has died of cancer. My grandparents all died of cancer and my parents too. Apparently nuclear radiation can get into the DNA of parents so much so that it can affect them also even if they’re born years later. Two of my sisters have been treated for cancer also (thyroid and uterine.) I assume I’ll get it as well.

This is normal for the US and Russia, test sites are hard to have without other consequences. And I don't think civilians really cared about it as they watched them go off nor could they just tell the government to not do it.
