He means in a sarcastic way that this is the greatest moment of the german Luftwaffe. This pilot was played by Heinz Reincke. In germany he was a famous actor. He died last year.

I always took it to mean that it was his moment to to do something, something that turned out to be inconsequential

@@thesmoog734 The Luftwaffe were severely crippled at that point and he only had two planes left in his squadron after years of fighting. Despite his requests, he couldn't get reinforcements. After arguing with his superiors, he was ordered to go anyway, but one pass with two planes was all he could manage. That's why he had that attitude, because he realized it was a futile effort.
