Larkhams is easily the most remarkable, this was in the 98th minute of a semi final that had gone into overtime, it was pounding down with rain, Larkham was on one leg due to a thigh injury earlier, and it was his first attempt at a drop goal at any level of rugby since he tried once as a 14 year old. They won the World Cup the next week.
@Helmut833 жыл бұрын
I agree. But in rugby all things Australia will be eternally underrated. It's New Zealanders and Southafricans who get all the promotion, the spotlight and the marketing. Larkham was one of the best players I've ever seen, if not the best, and he never gets mentioned when talking about the best players ever. His drop against South Africa was just epic and defining, and like its author it doesn't get recognized as such.
@OfficialArthusamakh Жыл бұрын
It's kinda crazy to see so few people attempt drop goals. Either it's really difficult (explaining why SA's attempts by Kolbe, Arendse and Willemse in the recent 1/4s and final were missed) or not many players/teams are ready to take the risks.

What makes it so amazing is that it was an obvious split-second decision. Larkham wasn't in the pocket, he was still running right along with the rest of the backline, and the drop of the ball was far from perfect. He just timed it to perfection and the ball flew like a rocket.

The modern Wallabies have a reluctance to not use drop goals as a strategy to score points which I think is a serious, serious error in Australian rugby mindset. Strategically, it's not even massively important that the drop goal be scored all the time. It's about making the opponents worry "uh oh, what if they go for a drop goal right here? We have to charge up!" That may leave them open for a try scoring opportunity. A drop goal isn'r a sneaky cheat way of scoring, it's worth three points, and it's my personal opinion that it is a very entertaining and exciting part of rugby union. If it fails, the team attempting to score the drop goal look like absolute mugs. If it succeeds, they show that they've got an arrow in their quiver that should make the defending team nervous at all times. On top of all this, actually hitting the ball correctly with your foot, under pressure from a gigantic 115 kg front-rower is an unbelievable skill. You basically have to focus 100% on an already difficult skill, whilst trying to gorget that you're almost certainly going to be demolished, as soon as the ball touches your boot. Drop kicking is a tough skill to begin with, having a massive fella charge you down while you're attempting it is another thing entirely.
