I just want y'all to know, about a year ago I went on a scientific cruise (collecting rock samples from the seafloor) from October through December. I was one of the (un)lucky few that drew the short straw to work the 1 am to 9 am shift. Between Wind and Water was one of my favorite companions on the journey. There was nothing like listening to your harmonies while watching the stars, wind, and waves roll by (when you're not describing the minerals in basalts). Thank you for all that you do!

I did 11 years onboard nuclear attack submarines. I left the service, swore I'd never go near the water again. 9 months later, I reenlisted in the naval reserve, drove aluminum "war canoes" armed with grenade launchers and .50 caliber machine guns, drove big green trucks and toted a rifle. Now I sail my own boat, often alone, sometimes out in the ocean. I was definitely blind to make up my mind, to go to sea once more. I just can't seem to swallow the anchor.

I'm a Navy vet as well. I served five years as an aircraft mechanic and deployed twice on a carrier...they were the five worst years of my life. I had friends die and nearly lost myself in the bottom of a bottle and on the business end of a barrel. We weren't even at war--we were just overworked, underpaid, and aggressively ignored. Even as I'm working through the things I suffered, I find myself thinking about the good times I had, the places I've been, and the people I miss, and somehow I found myself looking up Naval Reserve opportunities in the same day that I cried for hours reliving the day I learned one of my shipmates killed himself. I don't know what about it calls me back, but it's good to see that I'm not the only one.

I'm reminded of how Alexander Selkirk was rescued from an island where he'd been marooned through long lonely years. He wrote a book about his miserable experience, hoping he could make money and not have to go to sea again. He took his manuscript to a famous author, asking for advice. The famous author told him nobody would want to read such a book, so Selkirk sighed and went back to sea, and Daniel Dafoe made a fortune off of *_Robinson Crusoe_* . . . .

This one is a really accurate song and i love it. Us sailors dread the moment when we have to go back. You miss your home, you miss the solid ground under your feet. But when you're home it's like..Your home is on the ship. Once you get used to that rocking feeling and your mate's and all the "adventures" and experiences. You can never really just stop it. You can just talk about your experiences for hours upon hours and never get tired of them. Its like your second family. Once you fall asleep while the waters are rocking the ship. That's when you fall in love with it. Im a young lad but i gotta tell that i feel free in my chains. I love my profession.

When first I landed in Liverpool, I went upon the spree With money at last, I spent it fast, I got drunk as drunk could be But when my money was all gone, it was then that I wanted more But a man must be blind to make up his mind to go to sea once more Once more, once more, go to sea once more But a man must be blind to make up his mind to go to sea once more And as I walked down London Road I met with a Rapper Brown I asked him if he'd take me in and he looked at me with a frown He said: "Last time you was paid off, to me you chalked no score But I'll give you a chance and I'll take your advance And I'll send you to sea once more." Once more, once more, send you to sea once more But I'll give you a chance and I'll take your advance And I'll send you to go to sea once more I shipped on board of a whaling barque, we were bound for the Greenland seas Where cold winds blow through frost and snow, why Jamaica rum would freeze And worst to bear, I'd no hard weather gear, as I'd spent all my money ashore It was then that I wished that I was dead and could go to sea no more No more, no more, go to sea no more It was then that I wished that I was dead and could go to sea no more Some times we're catching whales, my lads, some times we're catching none With a twenty-foot oar stuck in your paw, from four o'clock in the morn And as the shades of night roll on and you rest on your weary oar It was then that I wished that I was dead and could go to sea no more No more, no more, go to sea no more It was then that I wished that I was dead and could go to sea no more So come all of you hard weather sailing lads, who listen to my song When you get back from those long trips, I'd have you not go wrong Take my advice, drink no strong drink, don't you knock on that brothel door But get married instead and spend all night in bed, and go to sea no more No more, no more, go to sea no more But get married instead and spend all night in bed, and go to sea no more No more, no more, go to sea no more But get married instead and spend all night in bed, and go to sea no more

The exhausted cries of the working poor; sea shanties show a perspective on our history that is easily overlooked when hearing the stories through the lens of kings, generals, clergy, and other "upper class" people that usually write the sources and stories we study. Yesterday I went to the Coast of Maine to watch the storm surf. I was fascinated by my response to the sea. Five and a half decades ago I went to sea in the US Navy on everything from a DE off Halifax in the winter to an endless trip on a Liberty ship from Norfolk VA to Vung tau SVN. I learned to stay away from the sea. Yet as I watched the surf and the misty horizon part of me wanted to get out there. The rational part said, "No more boys, no more. I'll go to sea no more." Best advice ever! Except for a ferry ride from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland I will bide by that.

I recently got myself invested in listening to sea shanties, I don't listen to them in a directed manner but rather anything that sounds good to my ears. I travel a lot due to my work, especially to rural underdeveloped places and as well as overseas, and I used to listen to the (now ever growing) playlist. In my first ever office tour, I was in Glasgow. One fine night, I was listening to the playlist dead in the night as I worked and couldn't sleep, and this utter gem of a song played randomly on "suggested songs". I swear to God I will never forget that feeling, I was quite unreal to be honest. Idk how a song made me feel so many things. From then on, this song has been a staple for me, whenever I left home for a tour; it doesn't even have to be a tour specifically, I generally just listen to this and think of all the places I have been to and the things I have seen. Truly this song is something special.

I first found my love for shanties and other songs like them when playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag, when I found this channel it reignited my love for these kinds of songs. When I have the money I'm definitely buying an album. Keep up the good work guys!
