Rest in peace, Bobby, he passed away during the development of this video, we had him for 9 years and he had a good life, I'll miss you, Bob...
Metroid Dread is the latest game in the Metroid series, and I absolutely fell for this game the moment I put it in my Switch. Normal Mode, Hard Mode, Dread Mode, I've done it all.
And this review will be looking at the full game from start to finish, analysing what I thought as I experienced it. Please enjoy, consider leaving a like, this video took weeks to put together, and thank you for watching!

Hello again new people! This video is blowing up and I'm currently very very very shocked! Please consider subscribing if you enjoyed, I'm mainly posting Soulsborne countdown/ranking content at the moment, but I have full plans to do a Metroid Prime Remastered video either this year or next year, and I cover Nintendo content when I can! I'd love to one day create content as a job, so every view & every sub truly helps! You're awesome!

One thing I like about Raven Beak's boss fight is that he doesn't just use the Flash Shift and Shinespark, but also 2 of the Aeion abilities from Samus Returns. The aura that covers him during phase one is the Lightning Armor, and the rapid fire beam shots during phase 2 is the Beam Burst.

My Dread Mode run was the most frustrating thing I have ever done in a video game. I love the number of times while watching this you casually say "Now just do this thing to progress" while the video is of Samus failing to do that thing. For example, at 59:20 you say "Make your way up the shaft" as Samus immediately takes damage and falls to the bottom. The contrast between what's being spoken and shown makes for a very enjoyable experience.

My theory on why Quite Robe reactivated the EMMIs: He knew Sami’s was going to need her full arsenal when taking on RavenBeak. His plan was probably to have Sami’s absorb there powers while shut down. But given that he most likely had limited capacity under the influence of the X, he done the next best thing. Trusting Sami’s to take out the EMMIs and get her powers back.

side note about the radar pulse, we have had something like that back in super metroid. there was a scanner that revealed what kinds of blocks were in your view cone.it was very cool and yeah, didn't come back much if at all in later games. if at all. I actually kind of prefer it over the pulse cause you don't have to missile a block to tell what it is, and it isn't a timed thing. there's a reason most of the series tries to mimic supermetroid in various ways.

very, very good analysis/review of metroid dread. i've gotta add, regarding samus' characterization, the way her visor is presented is incredible. they make it transparent to better depict some facial expressions, but then it will be completely opaque to show samus hardening her resolve or putting her guard back up. god, every cutscene makes me want to jump up and cheer from how well they're animated and presented. also, my condolences for Bobby, it was very sweet to honor him at the beginning.

My biggest gripe is how the beams are linked to progression and how they're handled. In Metroid 2, super, zero mission, and fusion, the Charge beam, spazer, and plasma beams weren't really required to progress. Of course in fusion you couldn't get out of the boss room without them, but if you had debug mode and disabled them right after, you could progress just fine. They were handled best in super when they were just optional upgrades that just increased your firepower. The wave beam and ice beam were the only required items, and those were used in creative ways like "freeze these flying guys and climb out of that pit" and the wave beam was ""shoot through a wall to hit the switch", which was mostly replaced by the diffusion beam in dread. Whenever you get a new beam in dread, it's just for a simple door. "You're not allowed to leave this area until you pick up the spazer which opens the spazer door and moves spazer blocks. You can't leave until you get the wave/plasma beam, which opens wave/plasma beam doors". It would be cool if I could sequence break and skip these items as well as the varia and gravity suits (without all the super complicated bugs, like axis skew and the floor clip) so I could add a bit of extra difficulty to the game if I liked , but I can't. This could have easily been fixed if they let us toggle items like in super or the mod for zero mission, but they'll probably never add that to the game The ice beam is also sorely missed, considering after fusion we know that samus is perfectly capable of using it without issues, and there was no reason to replace it with the ice missiles in dread, which just make the super missiles less effective. The plasma beam is also the weakest it has ever been in the series. Here's a comparison between fusion and dread in terms of stats. Fusion: 3x damage boost, per-frame damage Dread: 2x damage boost Dreads version of the plasma beam is only slightly more powerful than previous iterations of the wave beam, and for whatever reason, the massive damage boost was given to dreads wave beam. It also doesn't help that a lot of later enemies in the game are tanky as hell, meaning you have to mash the fire button like crazy and give yourself a cramp for it to be effective OR wait 2 seconds and counter, making the enemies more of a boring chore
@BillySYT
@BillySYT Жыл бұрын
I'm hoping when we eventually get a Metroid 6, that they feel more comfortable branching out with how upgrades work for progression. I can understand them not using quite so creative methods of progression, because of how many new players would be coming into Metroid with Dread, who perhaps weren't ready for something THAT challenging (Which I guess is ironic given I'd say Dread is extremely challenging regardless). At the very least, I'd love for the Ice Beam or something that functions similarly to return, as I found using the beam to escape Norfair in Super to be one of my favourite upgrade moments in the series. Dread plays around with the mechanic of being "trapped" in different zones, which I enjoy, but I agree that most of the ways you escape those zones end up being "Open door". Thanks for the comment, love hearing other opinions ^^

I see Quiet Robe as reactivating the EMMIs as the X trying to kill their predator: The Metroid. Fusion indicates that the X get the hosts memories, and so if the X took over Quiet Robe, it would know that Samus has metroid DNA, and knowing the EMMIs are meant to kill her, again from Quiet Robe's memories, it makes sense it would reactivate them to eliminate their predator.

As someone who’s beaten the game over 30 times, this was a great summary (or rather almost walk through) was super accurate and I think it captured everything that makes this game great! People who don’t like the exploration can just go where their gut tells them by following the breadcrumb items and will be fine, and the world is super open if you do like exploration and sequence breaks. Somehow (in my opinion) it’s able to cater to both sides of the Metroidvania genre. I really appreciated how you went out of your way to give some examples of sequence breaks instead of just saying that they exist as well! One thing that I noticed is that early space jump is possible a second way as well! If you get under the space jump room, you can use bombs to get into a little passage that opens up into the item room without the need of almost frame/angle perfect pseudo-wave shots. Other than that, you got the majority of skips that a non-speed runner could conceivably need and I really liked that aspect of this review, since most others don’t usually bother with that aspect of the game. It really shows the replayability of this game, which is why I’m still not bored of it after 30 times! If you’re somehow still on the fence on getting this game after this review, just freaking get it! It’s a phenomenal experience and it was worth every penny!

I knew about the other space jump skip, but I couldn't, for the life of me, pull it off for footage. Absolutely! The replay value for me has come almost entirely from trying skips and glitches found by the speedrunners. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such a detailed video. It's great to see so many people get into Metroid because of Dread. It's a fantastic franchise consisting of some of my favorite games of all time, and it's insane how it's so often gone under the mainstream radar with how influential it is (creating an entire genre FFS). While Zelda may be my #1 favorite franchise, Metroid still holds a very special place in my heart. I first got into it back with Fusion and Zero Mission in the GBA days, and played the hell out of them. I literally waited more than half my life for Metroid 5 to finally become a reality, and for it to be the mythical Dread felt like the impossible come to reality. It still didn't feel real to me playing it upon for the first time, yet by the time I was done, it almost felt like Metroid had never left. Dread picks up right where Fusion left off, narratively and mechanically, and it wraps up an entire story arc like no time has passed at all. And you know what... I wouldn't have it any other way. For as much as I can enjoy reveling in Metroid being back, it's great the game itself doesn't fall into that trap like so many other franchises have after a long hiatus. Dread *is* unfortunately held back a bit for me with its frequent railroading and points of no return, as I enjoy getting lost in these games (so long as it's not confusing and obnoxious like Maridia or Torvus Bog). That said, it's hard to get too caught up in that with the never-ending supply of sequence breaks and just how solid the overarching product is. Tight controls, fast pace, clever level design, moody atmosphere, harrowing sense of isolation, intense horror sequences (EMMI), wonderful use of power-ups, *phenomenal* boss fights, and bar none the BEST characterization of Samus we've gotten thus far. When she spoke the bird language... my neighbors definitely heard my reaction. It's safe to say that Zero Mission remains my favorite Metroid, but Dread? Yeah. It's pretty based.

The devs put in several intentional sequence breaks: Grapple, Bombs, and Flash Shift before Kraid Super Missiles before Quiet Robe Pulse Radar very early (with bombs or grapple to reach orange TP in Cataris) Screw Attack before Z-57. There may be others I'm forgetting, but I figured I'd mention that the early Screw Attack you mentioned is not the dev-intended one. Once the planet is frozen, when you get to the room where the Thermal Generator thing is shown in the background (not working at this point), you can store a shinespark and use a diagonal up-left ballspark in the previous room to enter the morph tunnel in the corner, which leads to the David Jaffe room. If you keep going, you'll eventually work your way to the top-right of the Screw Attack room, which will let you obtain it while the planet is still frozen.

What a video! Bravo! Funny thing is that the one time that I actually reached the point of "okay what the hell... where do I go?" WAS indeed that early bit the one guy complained about. I don't know if my brain wasn't in the game yet or what, but it took a surprising amount of time for me to find those easily destroyed blocks. Also my biggest issue with this game was feeling very rail-roaded, but maybe that is because I didn't feel compelled to backtrack for item collection at any time, so I followed the very same amusement park patron pathway that the designers put in the game to usher non-metroidvania players through the game without frustration. My final gripe with the game is something I realize is 100% my own problem, and it is the distribution of difficulty in the game. Because I played so much original metroid as a kid, I really like when a metroid game makes difficulty spikes appear in the exploration phase more often rather than focusing the difficulty into boss fights (including EMMI parts in this game). My own ideal scenario in this game would be making the non-boss parts more dire, and the boss fights a bit more forgiving, at least when it comes to a first-play experience.

Nice review, I love the detail you put in. You probably know this by now, but the storm missiles work extremely well against Z-57's legs when it's putting them on the wall, makes that section a breeze. Also one of my favorite bosses! Dread mode was tough against him, I kept sliding Samus' toes into the pink goo on accident after making a flash jump over to the safe spot x.x Escue and the Twin Chozo Robots were much harder on dread mode for me. Those ones seem to reward you more for moving consistently in the same pattern and working in missiles around that pattern, where other bosses you more react to each specific attack they do. Like with Escue I run across the room, do a wall jump to avoid something, drop, run to the other side, do a wall jump,. drop, run to the other side, etc. Of course working in missiles when it's vulnerable. That's the only way I managed to survive the little purple thingies. Each chozo robot fight needed a different dance around the room too. The twins really sucked for me on dread mode, that's actually when I learned how good storm missiles were against them. Still took me way too long lol

The original metroid for nes was one of the first games I ever played. I've played every single game in the series since. I treasure this franchise as most do, and as such feel qualified to say that........ you're 100% correct about the metroid suit. Best suit she's ever had. Hands down, no contest.

In 1:27:34 you can have early screw attack. Speed booster in this corredor into the room before and shinespark in morph ball, into a tiny corner at the top left that takes you into the emmi zone. Then you will be find a bunch of breakable blocks further to the left of the map. It's easy if you have pulse radar. In the room of red teleporter, you will need to do some precise jumps with bomb laying to progress (the most annoying part of this) but after that, easy. I usually don't do this in casual or speedrunning, but I always do in dread mode, because as you said it, the earlier you can get screw attack in dread mode, the better. Ps: the only advantage screw attack gives to Experiment Z-57 boss, is they easily break his arms. Just that.

I'm not fully done with the video yet, but if i remember it right you can easily beat the enemy that gives you the storm missiles (or a very similar mini boss) with the shine spark - when you get it early. I think it even one shots it. edit: I think the "all teleporters are linked now" isn't a story progression thing, but instead you just have to have used all teleporters or possible teleporter routes. edit 2: That screen capture after the end of the last boss fight was probably every Metroid fan ever. I even did the fight again, after completing the game, to get better screenshots. Such a dope ending to an amazing game.

If I hadn't watched this video I'd never have known I got the Grapple Beam early. Having got it early on my first playthrough, purely through dumb luck and poking around, I'm actually pretty surprised how much farther you're meant to get it. Had the same experience with the Chozo bots lol. First one felt absolutely brutal, by the last pair and solo fights they were my favorite encounters, felt like proper rival fights that reward skill by letting you demolish an enemy who can match you in many ways. Taking two of them effortlessly feels so satisfyingly badass.

Love this video so much as it really made me really love Metroid. Only experience I’ve had before this was the GBC Metroid 2 which I never finished because I didn’t understand the final boss but really loved. I then played the remake Samus Returns which I adored and it made me like the series and interested in it because before then I never played a Metroidvania to it’s fullest just little bits. I had played Super Metroid but haven’t finished it yet because of the Switch Online games. For me Metroid Dread was just a perfect experience of difficulty of combat and adventure and while I understand your struggles to get used to the controls I didn’t have a problem with them simply because I did play Samus returns which introduced to how Samus plays now, so it made me feel great to be able to have more freedom then the more limited feel that she had in Return. I do think it’s a great game if you want people to get into the genre and Metroid series in general only other game I can think of which is great intro to Metroidvanias is Hollow Knight granted I haven’t played many Metroidvaians since it’s not my area of expertise that’s RPGs
@BillySYT
@BillySYT Жыл бұрын
I'd say Hollow Knight is perhaps better than Dread to ease people into the genre, but only because Dread has quite the tough control scheme to learn, whereas Hollow Knight drip feeds it's harder control elements across the game. I'm not sure I'd say Hollow Knight is the best starting game either though due to it's extremely slow start until you get the Mantis Claws. Maybe something like the Ori games would be a good shot. They have tough platforming, but extremely forgiving respawn times, and a majority of your progression is tied to collecting new movement abilities ^^
