I suggest the term 'hyper' over 'super', because 'super' is already used in microtonality eg 'super major'

With major modes, it's far easier to understand like this.. It's just the note you start on in the major scale. Think of it in degree's of pitch rather than scale. You have ionian to locrian in the major scale, it's just what note is emphasized and perceived as the tonal center.

Great vid, but some things to consider - - The function of the scale is just as important as its construction. For example, the Super Lydian scale functions as a means of transit to other keys towards the "brighter" end of the circle of fifths. The #4 in Lydian creates a quality that tonicizes the fifth scale degree. Same with what you are calling super mixolydian, but tonicizing the 4th scale degree. I see both scales as "modes of transit" rather than simply overlapping scales, as I feel that misses the point. - you don't have to make scales purely by step! Consider, for example, super lydian but...without the #4? You get essentially a "super pentatonic" scale, which has a number of uses. For example, if you wanted to construct a chord from that scale that condenses a 13th chord into the closest possible voicing, you can do that here! Ex: CDEGAB. You could also create scales that work off of the same functional basis as my previous point, but using alternating M3-m3-m2 intervals. You get close to an arpeggio here, true, but scales like octatonic (m2-M2), hexatonic (m2-m3) and so on break some conventions we are used to in scalar constructions. Just my 30 cents lol.

I used the term "metascale" for any looping 3-interval or 4-interval pattern. Meta-lydian happens to use the tetrachord based on the W-W-W-H interval pattern. Meta-mixolydian uses W-W-H in succession.

Really appreciate the video! Why go for just four first notes? Like you could take de five first notes of a scale for exemple then repeat, or in alternance four and three for exemple? Or even 1, after 2, after 3, after 4, after 5, after 6, after the whole thing, Would it work? What about other scales famillies like melodic minor or double harmonic major? Can you build a "super melodic minor"? Also if you use one quarter tone in your initial structure, like a maqam's tetrachord, would you be able to generate more structures?

Excellent video, although I disagree with your conclusion that only four SUHMM scales exist. You only used the four tetrachords derived from the modes of natural major (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian and Lydian). I applied the same concept to the harmonic tetrachord (1 b2 3 4) and got some really interesting sounds. I guess I'll call this the... Meta-Harmonic? Meta-Byzantine? Meta-Hungarian? I'm open to suggestions.

I was thinking the same thing. This meta-harmonic has interesting modes in it: 1: 1 b2 3 4 (5) 2: 1 b3 3 #4 (5) 3: 1 b2 b3 3 (5) 4: 1 2 b3 #4 (5) Of interest is the fourth mode, as its tetrachord is the same as in the scale we commonly call hungarian minor or gypsy minor. I think this and superlydian are all the fifth-based super scales you can make that don't have consecutive half steps. If we lift those restraints, however, we can do some wild stuff. Take a look at this "super-pentatonic" scale: 1 b3 4 (5) Very cool open kind of sound. But it is of course just a subset of superdorian without the 2/9. I think it deserves to be called its own scale though, since we call the minor pentatonic its own scale too. But take a look at this, if we turn this scale into the blues scale by adding the #4: 1 b3 4 #4 (5) This scale has consecutive half steps so it's pretty unstable and weird sounding, but I think it's interesting. Here are the modes: 1: 1 b3 4 #4 (5) 2: 1 2 b3 3 (5) 3: 1 b2 2 4 (5) 4: 1 b2 3 #4 (5) What about fourth-based superscales? If we look into it and do the "math", we'll find that supermixolydian and its modes are the only fourth-based trichord-based superscales with no consecutive half-steps. If we allow consecutive half-steps, there is only one more trichord and fourth-based scale we can make. Here are its modes: 1: 1 b2 2 (4) 2: 1 b2 3 (4) 3: 1 b3 3 (4)

Thank you for this wonderful explanation of Jacob Collier’s ideas! I tried these out on the piano. I found that super locrian can only be done with the a cycle of 4ths (overlapping 4-note scales), and super lydian can only be done with a cycle of 5ths (overlapping 5-note scales). It seems to be due to the tritone (which is located on the 4th and 7th degrees of the major scale - which is where the lydian and locrian scales begin!!). For this reason, I feel that the terms “super lydian” and “super locrian” (which Jacob said in that clip you showed) are adequate terms, because they are uniquely unambiguous!

You should really use Meta instead of Super. Meta implies that it keeps going wether Super just implies that it is 1 step up. Like Super Locrian. Also to me, it seems like there is only Super Lydian (5ths) and Super Locrian (4ths)
