I enjoyed the Witness, but my tolerance for pretentious bullshit is definitely higher than most, and that game was swimming in it. This game is a great parody, because you can tell the dev got what the Witness was _trying_ to do, and was not impressed in the slightest.

A game doesn't necessarily need to be deep to be thought provoking, a game can demand thought from the player through strategy, preparation, choice making, learning or gameplay. But in general for a game to be good, it needs to be fun, engaging and thought provoking.

I loved the witness due to the fact that playing it feels like you're back to being 11-12 years old and you start thinking some philosophical shit in your free time and your thoughts just drag on and you think that its kinda smart but you're just wasting time and think all those random thoughts just to entertain yourself. The game is full of this meaning of life-esque thoughts that mask your need to chase away boredom and blur the passing of time

I love The Witness, played it to full completion, including the hour long puzzle, and I fully understand any criticism that game gets. From a game design standpoint, it betrays your trust as a player quite a few times, and in many moments it thinks it's a lot smarter than it actually is. It's still a great, beautiful and well designed game for the most part, especially the main/required puzzles for reaching the game. But yeah, overall a very mixed bag.

I liked Johnathan Blow's "Braid" and it was a slight bit pretentious, but The Witness is a whole other level of stupid. The dev looks down on people who play video games just for a skinner box of rewards, and thinks they should always be some interactive art piece. I don't like The Witness not because I didn't understand it, but because it's bad. It's trying to do the same thing that Pathologic is doing, but Blow refuses to admit that it's bad on purpose.

I loved the witness, The puzzles were great(especially the environmental ones) and the game world was beautiful and I enjoyed exploring it but yeah it was pretentious as shit and I didn't bother looking for all the secret puzzles. The looker is such a fun parody I laughed my ass off at the end.

Honestly to make a parody like this you probably would have to respect the source material on some level. And no, The Witness is pretty good. There aren’t many games that really force you to think that hard and come up with possible solutions for something you don’t even know how to solve yet. Plus, nothing beats that dopamine rush when it finally clicks and you get that “Aha!” moment. But yeah it’s unfortunate that the dev has his head shoved so far up his ass.
