I remember going to visit my family in Turkey every 4 years (after immigrating to Canada in 1971 at age 2) I would go see man grandparents in a small village not far from Istanbul right by the sea. My grandfather would take me out fishing and then diving around rocks that had wonderful natural mussels. We would come back with buckets and give some to the neighbours. My grandfather could cook hem in many different ways. I also remember swimming out to a rock in the sea with a cousin at the age of 11 and bringing some bak to shore to cook them on a sheet of thin over a fire. Nothing but just the sea water in them and that beautiful orange cooked flesh of the mussels.

That sounds like a wonderful memory. Well narrated too - I could imagine the glistening sea and beach while reading your comment ☺️

When you go (north) over the Galata Bridge, on your left hand side, you can see a market below. Before you get to the stalls there are sellers of rice stuffed mussels. I seem to recall, by the six? That's it, order a portion, then another and another until you are content. Good value for money. Then head to Nevizade quarter and Cicek Pasaji for a sit down meal. You will not be disappointed.
