note on Aragorn/Arwen: They have been Betrothed to each other for almost 60 years at this point, Aragorn first met Arwen in Lothlorien at the hill of Cerin Amroth, and Aragorn was RAISED in Rivendell as Elrond's Foster child after his Father was killed and after his Mother passed, and He gave to Aragorn the Heirlooms of the House of Elendil, the Shards of Narsil and the Sceptre of Anuminas, when he "came of age" , Elrond was really against Arwen/Aragorn and said "The Evenstar of the Noldor shall diminish her grace for no less than the Ruler of BOTH Arnor and Gondor" meaning that Aragorn would have to Defeat Sauron, Reclaim the High Kingship of the Reunited Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor, in order to marry Arwen, in the Book Anduril is reforged before they set out and Aragorn has it thru Moria

point of lore for non-spoilery clarification: at the beginning, the film seriously glosses over the final hand to hand combat that Elendil and Gil Galad had with Sauron. They were, respectively, the greatest human king and the greatest elf king of the age, they were both VERY large men. Elendil was 7'11" and Gil Galad was 7'4" (which gives you an idea of just what a monsterously large being Sauron was). They engaged Sauron in close quarters battle and while Sauron DID fatally wound both of them, the human and the elf, did, in fact inflict lethal injury on Sauron in return. At that point, Isildur just had to pick up the broken sword and easily cut the finger with the ring off, thereby severing Sauron's spirit from the mortal realm.

@@jallakka7149 Yeah I take some issue with this as it implies all you had to do was cut off the ring finger and Sauron was immediately defeated BUT I can also understand that condensing the entire back story of the ring into 5 minutes or so at the beginning of the movie for a general audience was necessary AND really difficult. Overall, they did fairly well with it, I think.

The elves are leaving middle earth to return to the Undying Lands. Although elves are immortal they feel sadness from the deaths of other living creatures, which, for many who are thousands of years old, is a great burden and sorrow. The elven rings protect the elves from that sorrow to an extent but with sauron returned they fear that soon their rings, unusable because of Sauron’s ring, will cease to protect them from that unbearable sadness - so they are going to the undying lands, where nothing there dies. Incidentally, gandalf has the elven ring of fire, which is why people feel happier and more optimistic around him. His ring creates that effect.

For clarity the one Ring DOESNT "make" you invisible, it "shifts" you into the "realm of the unseen" and "magic" in Tolkien's world is more in the order of Spirituality than "Magic" , thats why Frodo "sees" the Nazgul when he wears the Ring on Weathertop, because he has "Shifted" into the Realm of the Unseen

JRR Tolkien, a professor at Oxford University, was the author of The Lord of the Rings and the creator of Middle Earth. Peter Jackson took Tolkien's writings and created these films. Tolkien started creating his world in the trenches of World War I. He published The Hobbit in 1937 and finished the Lord of the Rings in 1955. I recommend that you read the books as well.

Additional fact: The Hobbits are NOT "little kids", they are all adults of Age (33) with the sole exception of Peregrin (Pippin) who is the only one still in his "Tweens" at 29, Frodo is 50 when they set out, and has ALREADY had the Ring for 17 years, the movies really gloss over that fact, but Frodo has the Ring almost 20 years before he sets out for Rivendell, its not just a few days/weeks after Bilbo left, additional fact: Jackson played it up as tho "pipeweed" in TLOTR was equal to cannabis- Tolkien specifically addressed this subject in the foreward to his 73 edition" It has come to my attention that some of our friends "across the Water" (meaning americans) have some questions regarding the origins of Pipeweed: It is undoubtedly a form of Nicotianna (latin for Tobacco) since it is a "new world" (north american) plant, he had heard some in the Hippie subculture were conflating it with cannabis even then and was trying to shut that rumor down, so he retconned that the Numenoreans had planted it around thier settlements in the North kingdom and hundreds of years later Hobbits had discovered it growing wild in the Ruins of Arnor

Tolkien did clarify that pipeweed was tobacco but I can see why PJ likened it more to marijuana. For the last 40 years it has been pounded into us that tobacco is bad. I'm a former tobacco smoker myself but now marijuana use, both medicinal and recreational, is socially acceptable so giving pipeweed psychotropic properties makes it make sense for new generations who know how bad tobacco is for you.

One of the best trilogies of all time. I sometimes forget that this movie is already 23 years old. I have never had any interest in travelling, but this movie made me want to visit New Zealand (haven't done it yet, though). I think that in Tolkien's world Goblin and Orc are just different names for the same thing. Personally, I've interpreted goblins to be a smaller and weaker type of orc, and the uruk-hai are a bigger and stronger type of orc, an über-orc. I guess you could see Orc as a general term with several subtypes. I'm not that well-versed in the lore, just a casual fan, so someone with deeper knowledge of the lore of Middle-earth can comment more on this.
@rikk319
@rikk319 12 сағат бұрын
Yes, goblin and orc are different words for the same creature in the book. In the films, goblins are smaller than orcs. Also, in the book, Saruman crossed humans with orcs to make half-orcs, but they were called half-orcs--he used the most human-looking ones (they merely looked like ugly humans) as spies in human lands, like Bree. Uruk-hai are simply the biggest, strongest orcs, organized by Saruman into the strongest units in his orc army. In the film however, they pretty much blended uruk-hai and half-orcs into a new kind of orc, that is much more powerful.

Thanks for letting us watch with you - it's great fun. You'll be flooded with lore, and I hate to add to it, but I want to give some back ground for Gandalf and Saruman. The higher-ups (supernaturally speaking) sent 5 wizards to Middle Earth to keep an eye on things and to help the different "races" (dwarves, elves, men, etc) if Sauron should ever re-appear. (Five - but don't worry about the other 3 for now.) Saruman was the leader of them - he was the head "Sauron watchdog" so to speak. So imagine how dismayed Gandalf must've been to learn he'd switched sides. In addition to having to try to get rid of Sauron, Gandalf must now contend with Saruman, his former boss and a very powerful wizard. Thanks again, looking forward to the next part!

You weren't late, nor were you early, you reacted to The Lord of the Rings precisely when you meant to...I don't like sometimes that people began with the Extended Editions, after seeing the originals first, you don't appreciate it as much after years of seeing the theatrical versions. It was so exciting noticing the new scenes but, that's semantics. People compare this to Star Wars, but it's not even close with the depth of the lore, languages, races and love that Tolkien poured into this. Enjoy the journey, it's precious!

That seeing the theatrical versions first is better is just your opinion and definitely not shared by all, myself included. The extended gives first time viewers so much more context and I have yet to see one reactor, well maybe one but she bitched about everything, that complained about pacing. I'm watching a guy who is rewatching LOTR but this time the extended editions and he was surprised at most of the stuff they cut because of how important it was and the context they give. Pshaw on your theatrical cuts.

Frodo is 33 in the movie. It's his birthday also. That's the Hobbit's age of majority, so Bilbo can leave him the house. The movie messed up the timeline, but : Frodo is 33 in the movie, but 50 in the book Sam is 38 Marry is 36 Pippin is 28, still in his ' tweens ' or still a minor like a teenager.
@rikk319
@rikk319 12 сағат бұрын
Yes, turning 33 for a hobbit is like turning 18 or 21 for humans. That means Pippin is roughly equivalent to 16-17 as a human. Sam and Merry are equivalent to 25-28 in human years. Frodo is 50, and likely is equivalent to a human in their mid-late 30s, but since he's owned the Ring since he was 33, he still looks like someone in their late teens.

they didnt mess up the timeline hes 33 at the party in the book and 50 when he leaves the shire. gandalf leaves for years in the books, but screen time is valuable and small details like that are not important enough to understand the over all plot. they have to cut stuff like that not only to fit the whole book into one movie but to keep the audiences attention. to much detail can start to bore the viewer. they also could make the movies a part on part two type thing becuase peter jackson was under a 3 movie contract for the whole trilogy

The nazgul aren't afraid of water in general. They just know the river builds the border to the land of the elves. And they know Lord Elrond and his elves are powerful and able to use some magic. That's why they stopped at the river not sure if to go further. In fact this is no trilogy but one epic movie, filmed all at once in a 18 month session, like the source was only one massive book but splitted into three for practical reasons. One does not simply 😉 watch a movie like LotR. This sh¡t will draw you in and make you part of it. Enjoy!

Nazgul fear water because of Ulmo, the Lord of Waters. He is equivalent to Poseidon, and as a valar (akin to a Greek god, but in Middle-Earth lore more like an arch-angel) he has mastery over water no matter where it is. Since water is the stuff of life, and Nazgul hate and are jealous of life, they avoid water when they can--but it does not harm them like, say running water harms a vampire. They fear fire as well, but that is because of its warmth. The Nazgul are effectively undead, and are cold as death.

The elves were leaving basicly because they grew sick and tired. Being immortal and unchangeable, they are not good at handling change in an everchanging world. So they went to the Undying Lands beyond the sea, were the Valar and Maia (archangels and angels) live. It's not heaven. The Undying Lands exist on the same plane as Middle Earth but removed. Most of the elves in Rivendell are Noldor--elves who long ago lived in Valinor, the Blessed Realm. The reason for their leaving is in Tolkien's novel The Silmarillion. After the great war that ended the reason for their exile from Valinor, they began trickling back over the long centuries. By the time of the film, there are only a matter of a few thousand left, or maybe even less, in Middle-Earth. Elrond is effectively their leader, as there is no elf-king left after Gil-Galad died fighting Sauron millennia before. (Some might say that Galadriel is a queen, but she never claims that title despite being a direct descendant of the line of elf royalty. She simply calls herself The Lady of the Golden Wood.) Legolas' elves are wood elves, ones who never lived in Valinor, and thus aren't as powerful as the Noldor elves--at least not as powerful spiritually.
