With old digital only video games starting to blink out of existence as companies go under or licenses change, I wonder years down the road if this app will ever cease to function or go off the store, making the game unplayable. As cool as the functionality is, I hope people figure out a way to preserve digital games, and digital companions to games like this. I may be wrong, and this may not be an issue, but it was on my mind.

I think the people that want to have a game like this ‘forever’ will find a way of keeping one said device no matter its age which will allow the game to be played forever. It may disappear from a store wayyyy down the line but if it’s already installed. You have it.

@@RollingSolo If I come to a game like this after the digital companion has long since gone then I pretty much have no chance to play it as originally intended, unless the digital companion can be replaced by some mechanical method (e.g. dice). For this reason I will always prefer board games that are not reliant on digital technology.

In the last two weeks I've gone from buying it to sitting on the fence to probably buying it lol. The minis look great painted and I like the app in this. I'm also a fan of MOM 2nd Ed. So this works for me. Happy to see the rules reference is back. They did not include it in L5R which was a little annoying. The rule books are probably similar to MOM. Learn to play didn't have much that game either No insert again is also a little annoying. Not a fan of small cards but I guess I have to live with it if I'm buying.

That first paragraph is exactly where my head is at as well! I plan to remove the cardboard included over time similar to what I did with Mansions to allow for storage for quite a number of the any expansions minus the minis. Thanks for watching!

Awesome video, congrats! It was really nice to see the contents in depth. I've pre-ordered this one a while ago mainly because of the theme - unfortunately I didn't know it would use mini cards that much ... otherwise I wouldn't have pre-ordered it because I just hate mini-cards when they are the majority and the core of a game. Don't like how small the artwork is presented in this type of cards, it's also a bit more annoying to read those small texts. But that's my personal preference, not saying it's a negative for a boardgame - although it's the case for my taste.

That seems to be on purpose. How it works is that over time, as you gain more and more lore, you'll find out some details and background about your item and what makes it special. So the item's look doesn't change, but its name and stats change. Therefore it kinda makes sense to use the same artwork for the different "levels" of your dagger, since it still looks the same after leveling up. It's not that you sell your basic dagger to buy a better one.

I really appreciate the info on the contents of the box! Thanks for uploading this! But I do have a question: How is the repacking for the minis? I'm looking at getting a box built to carry the minis because I like to really care for mine. Did they feel easily broken in certain points? (weapons, etc..) Did they repeack neatly in the box or are they kinda just tackling each other in a big pile?

You bet! Happy to help :) Literally a dog pile in a bag in the box. However, 3d Raptor has a great insert. Only problem is expansions. I prefer to use a bag in the box and remove the insert. They’re well made and won’t break clumped together.

Hey Michael! I worked on the setup video tonight and was impressed with how quick it is to setup. It clicks really Week in terms of completing the setups. All the piece fit back in the box no problem. Tossing the cardboard insert and you have even more room.

The game looks beautiful. I especially like the tiles and their realistic depiction of the world. The card art is gorgeous, although most of it, if not all, can be found in other FFG LotR games. The minis look okay, although I am not sure about the selection of characters. Who the hell are Elena and Beravor? And what is Bilbo doing in the core box? Not having some iconic characters in the core box leaves a sour taste. FFG will undoubtedly release those in a ton of overpriced future expansions, and I think I would rather back a KS campaign of a full game than go down the FFG expansion rabbit hole, and realize in 2-3 years that I have spend $300 just to get the fellowship characters. There is certainly LOTR LCG art in here but that’s no a bad thing for me personally. That artwork is fantastic. There will certainly be expansions but at the same time too many hero characters wouldn’t focus much on any one of them. They may have a strategy as to the stories they plan to tell and who’s involved in them. Guess we shall see!

There are no dice because this is most likely what the companion app does, I wonder just how the random chance mechanism works (as it's been proven that regular computers cannot produce a true random result). I would much rather have dice and not have to keep looking at a screen when one of the main things about a board game is that I'm not sitting staring at a screen.

I still have FFG's Middle Earth Quest game. Don't think it's even been punched yet, but was recently considering selling it. Not so sure now, as my first multi-player experience with Mansions Of Madness 2e's heavy app focus drew us out of the tabletop game too much. Felt that we spent too much time staring and poking at the tablet than pushing cardboard, minis, etc on the table. If I get this new ME game, it may only be for solo play.

I've preordered the game once it was possible to! I'm a huge fan of LOTR and can't wait to try it. But... I've seen the FFG live playthrough and must admit I was a bit dissapointed by some elements of the game. First, the small cards. Why would they choose small cards when we manipulate the cards so often?! The side quest were a bit boring like rescuing a dog or something... I love dogs but you know...dog rescue may not have its place in an adventure game in the MiddleEarth universe. Skill checks...skill checks... all they were doing was flipping cards... I mean ALL THE TIME! My hype has went down a lot. I really hope I'm mistaking and the game is gonna be good. I'm afraid it's gonna be average at best. Prove me wrong Adam and do an awesome playthrough please haha Thanks! :)

If you’re familiar with Mansions of Madness, I expect it to have a similar depth and strategy feel. There are mechanic differences already. No dice for one. However this will have more of an over arching campaign like what is seen in the Imperial Assault app from what I gather. Interested to see how that plays out.

You may be able to come up with your own rules but the engine of the game is the app. So without it you’re losing the campaign and a bulk of mechanics!

Is it just me or is anyone else scared of this game. I preordered my copy and love LOTR and this type of dungeon crawler game. so needless to say I'm all in. So why is it scary? After watching the unboxing I can forsee so many expansions and even more if you add in the possibility of the hobbit. Also what give this game even more potential is that GW has a LOTR so I could see myself using those miniatures to bolster this and vice versa.

Typicall FFG things. If it sells well you will definitely see tile packs, hero packs, enemy packs, boss packs, figure blisters, expansions ... all this snazz. Given that the basegame already sells for about 90 euro it will be a very passionate ride for our wallets. Decent, lotr lcg, arkham horror lcg are all way above the 500 euro pricetag if you want to have more than the base game and in some cases are near the 1k mark if you are planning to get absolutely everything. Hopefully the app handles missing expansions very well because reprints are problematic with FFG. Especially for localized versions.

The app will handle expansions similar to Mansions. You enable or disable the expansion based on your ownership or if you want to only include certain contents in a game. Quite well done that way. Thanks for the thoughts and watching!

My only issue with this (and physical games in general) is that they are only available in German to me (I live in the Swiss German speaking part of Switzerland). Usually the translations are poorly made and reduce the flavour and atmosphere of a game. Also in today's online world it just complicates things. Card erratas, FAQs, publisher anouncements, forum threads, you name it... They are all in reference to the original English version and that complicates things alot for me. Furthermore, in case of the LotR books and movies, which I have devoured dozens of times in English (in German only as a kid when I didn't understand English yet), being stuck with a German version makes me feel a bit sad, because I love the original English names and songs, as created by Tolkien himself. That being said... If ANYONE knows of a retailer that might ship to Switzerland for a reasonable fee, I'd be very grateful for a reply. Since Switzerland is not part of the EU it can be really hard to find someone who provides shipping to us. Amazon has quit providing any shipping to Switzerland altogether and smaller stores usually don't even bother to mention anything about it, probably since the market and demand are comparably tiny. @@RollingSolo Geez that was a fast reply! Lol. It's not so much the fact of the app. I don't really mind them and can see the benefit of them. But my phone is nearly dead most of the time. When it's not I'm usually using it for something else. So having it required would basically make it so I could rarely play the game.

Ah gotcha! I find the plus with a tabletop game and an app is usually there is a power outlet very close by. So even with a bad battery you would be a-ok. These apps also have a save feature built within. Pretty cool!

I agree with this. It is definitely poor design, especially that big compass on the tiles. It's ugly. Even if mechanically necessary there would have been other ways to convey the information. The first second I heard about this game it was an insta buy for me but some parts of this look a bit phoned in and that's disappointing. Hopefully I'm wrong.

i watched a playthrough of this by FFG this week. It looks boring as sin man. it's flipping small cards to test stuff constantly and looks like the game drives the outcome. for those that hate dice rolling you may like but defo not for me. totally disappointed as was looking forward to this due to the theme but just looks bland! 😣

I would highly recommend trying Mansions (maybe locally at a game store) at least before avoiding FFGs app driven games. It’s one of the better if not the best implementations in a board game. On the other side of the coin, not all games work for everyone! Hope this videos helps in your decision either way.

3 years later? It’s not a great game. It had 1 moment I thought wow…..amazing…this is going to be immense…..but then it was back the to the boring repetitive game loop. The same loop for overpriced quests that should be free ffsake I paid a fortune for the game and the expansion but you get 1 quest for 50 quid. Yep more fool me.

@@RollingSolo yes they are too small.. as an item card it might work. but the art on it gets to compressed, i have imperial assault and the small once are ok there cuz they are item cards. but her all cards are small one,,, thewy could have made arkham horror size on most of the cards,,, im not gona bye this cuz of all the small cards, the artwork looks good but will be to mall
