"Fun" fact: the Dead Marshes were inspired by the battlefields of the Battle of the Somme in WWI. Tolkien fought in that battle, which was a 4-months long meat grinder in the mud and snow. It is likely that Tolkien saw the corpses of soldiers floating in the water, and that inspired him to create such a dreadful location.

"I didn't know they were Elvish cloaks!" That's why you should watch the extended versions. They provide little details like where Legolas' new bow, the cloaks, Sam's rope, Merry and Pippin's daggers came from. (They were all gifts from Galadriel, btw)

She together with her handmaidens crafted the cloaks and the rope, which may have hidden strands of her own hair in the, justnlike the strings of the galadhrim bows which makes sense since the elves Boe strings are strung with their own hair. And being of the same ilk as her half uncle she also created the mirror which wasn't easy to craft, and then she created the Light Of Eärendil which essentially absorbed the light and power of both Eärendil himself and the Silmaril that he still bears upon his brow as he sails the firmament! ❤❤❤

The relationship between Saruman & Sauron: how their respective power and abilities impacted the events of Middle-earth: Saruman & Sauron/Mairon were both Maia who had worked with Aulë Melkor(before he went fully”baddie”. They were both powerful beings with the ability to influence the world around them through their voice and aura. Saruman was initially a staunch ally of the forces of good & dedicated himself to the fight against Sauron and his minions. However, over time, Saruman became increasingly dedicated with holding back Sauron to the point of seeking further power and began to believe that he could use the same methods as Sauron to achieve his own ends. As he learned the dark lords ways so he formed his own faction as it were. But over all it was driven by a growing fear as he witnessed what looked to be an impending doom over many centuries of which he himself grew weary and worried. Saruman's bid to infiltrate Sauron's inner circle and gather information was driven by his desire for power and knowledge, but it also represented a betrayal of the trust that had been placed in him by his allies. He attempted to use his knowledge and influence to further his own goals, rather than working towards the greater good. While Saruman had the ability to defeat Sauron's physical body, it is important to note that defeating Sauron in this manner was only a temporary victory. Sauron was a powerful Maia, and even when his physical form was destroyed, his spirit endured. In fact, it was Sauron's spirit that was able to rebuild his power and influence over time, leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings. Moreover, even if Saruman had been able to defeat Sauron's physical body, it is unclear whether he would have been able to fully harness the power of the One Ring, which was Sauron's greatest weapon. The Ring was infused with Sauron's own power, and it was capable of corrupting even the most powerful beings. He still had lots of experience with RingLore to the point of making his own rings similar to that of Celebrimbor but they were essentially lesser rings of power which is sad that it was removed from the films or how Aragorn going into Isengard with Legolas and Gimli which is where they found many relics which they took back to Gondor etc. Ultimately, Saruman's downfall came about not because of any inherent evil in his character, but because of his obsession with power and his willingness to betray his allies. He was ultimately defeated by the very forces he had once sought to aid, and his legacy was tarnished by his treachery and lust for power. In contrast, Gandalf remained dedicated to the cause of good and resisted the temptation of power, even though he was also a Maia with great power and influence. He was able to defeat the Balrog of Moria, despite his own limitations as a physical being, and he remained committed to the fight against Sauron until the end. In the end, the events of Middle-earth were shaped not just by the power and abilities of the various characters, but also by their choices and motivations. While the Maiar had great power and influence, it was the choices they made with that power that ultimately defined them as good or evil.

Enjoyed watching the movie with you; you are a more perceptive viewer than many other reactors I've watched. The Men of Rohan, or Rohirrim, settled the area about 500 years previous to our story. It had previously been the northern province of Gondor, called Calenardhon, but Cirion the Steward of Gondor gave it to Eorl the Young and his followers as a reward for rescuing Gondor from an attack of Easterlings (the soldiers seen marching into the Black Gate). It's not seen much in the movie, but Tolkien envisioned the Rohirrim as speaking a different language from the Common Speech or Westron spoken by the other Men of the West. Tolkien translates the Westron as English, and he represents the language of the Rohirrim as Old English, or Anglo-Saxon. The King and other nobles of the Rohirrim could also speak Westron, but the song Eowyn sings at the burial of Theodred is in Anglo-Saxon. And since Tolkien was regarded as the leading scholar of Anglo-Saxon of his time, you can be sure it was accurate!

I think at the very start of this film we get our first visceral sense of just how powerful Gandalf really is. And I personally don't think that WAS a dream. Frodo is becoming stronger, more powerful, and the Ring is accentuating that. He had a vision. Your reactions are great! Loved your reaction to when the White Wizard revealed himself. The Wizards like Gandalf and Saruman (and Radaghast--he's not in this film) are spirits, like angels, as is Sauron and the Balrog. The latter two fell into darkness long, long ago. The Wizards were sent into this world in the forms of old men to help rally the free peoples against Sauron. Ages ago the Angels intervened directly and wrecked half the continent. They are unwilling to risk killing so many innocents again, nor laying waste to so much of the world. Gandalf was sent back by the One who created all the angels (or the Ainur as they are called), the Creator of all things. He is called Eru and sometimes Illuvatar.

According to Tolkien, Elves could even dream while moving about, "blending living night & deep dream." When Aragorn, Gimli & Legolas are running across the Plains of Rohan pursuing the orcs who captured Merry and Pippin, Legolas never sleeps, even stands watch while his wiped out Dwarf & Human companions are literally tuckered out and even while the other two are asleep. That & out of the entire journey Legolas was both Stoic and ethereal but the one whose heart remained the lightest and kept the fellowship afloat in so many ways ❤. So it was weird how the film gave it all to Gimli! 😂❤️ They have a debate after finding the brooch dropped by Pippin..... continue running through the night (& possibly miss other important signs in the dark), or rest overnight (and let the Uruks get further away from them). In the end, they choose to rest.

To clarify things about Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) therefore we must look at Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, they both were half-elven brothers who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents(Eärendil and Elwing) both half elven made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. Instead of being punished, the valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was a few thousand years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. I recommend videos by GirlNextGondor and The Red Book, and Tolkien Untangled and especially Men Of The West. Many other cool ones I’ll recommend in the comments section of those reaction videos you do from Tolkiens Legendarium lore videos. They are super engaging. You’ll be in love. Nothing would have existed if Tolkiens works never hit the light of day as they were meant to stay private and sometimes be shared with his children and so on. No Game Of Thrones. No Skyrim. No ElderScrolls, No World Of Warcraft, no Dungeons&Dragons. None of it. Not even Star Wars. Not even Harry Potter! They took inspiration from his works which were souly to give back a forgotten history of the Anglo Saxons that had their culture & history destroyed as the larger empires were riding around them. His works reflect the Elder Edda(Norse) The Kalevala(Finnish) and the Welsh people from Wales as well as Irelands cultures of the Tuatha De Danaan as well! His languages are fully fleshed out too resembling Finnish & Welsh • By the way Elrond is around 6870-8000 years old & nearly a full Elf year (as they age very very differently to Men) is close to 144 man years (solar years for them) they experience the TIME and the way men experience it but their clock is different! They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so I synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! Think of when Legolas walked ontop of all that snow on the Mountain of Caradhras!! They continue to endure as long ad the world itself does. (Arda) Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember, they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. the fountain of Galadriel's Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤ Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother)

Making Arwen his _VERY_ distantly removed cousin. That being said among the familial lines of Elves practically everyone is related. That happens when you live for several millennia. Read an interesting breakdown recently of the story of Arwen and the elves overall. I’m sure you know…but: the 3 elven rings, the Great Rings, created by the elves themselves without Sauramon’s direct influence (but based on his blueprints that made them vulnerable) were really the only thing keeping the elves in Middle Earth alive and from “fading.” Knowing that the War of the Ring would either leave the One Ring destroyed or back in the hand of Sauron the elves knew their time was over. The Great Rings would fail and “all would diminish.” Galadriel’s ring Nenya (the Ring of Adamant ❤️) was the only thing keeping Lothlorian and it’s trees alive. When she left on “the last ship” Lorain began to fade. Eventually Arwen would travel to Lorain after Aragorn’s death and leave the “circles of Arda” to join him (hopefully). “Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees… Until all the world has changed and the long years of your life utterly spent…” The fading trees referenced are actually the trees of Lorain that Galadriel’s ring kept alive.

Tolkien was always a bit ambiguous about the identity of the Two Towers. In one place he identifies them as Isengard and Minas Morgul, but because of the way Peter Jackson & Co. divided up the action into the three movies (different from the way Tolkien divided the books), Minas Morgul doesn't even appear until ROTK (there's a brief glimpse of it in FOTR).

Great reaction as usual! Previous commenters have taken many of the things I had to say, including a more detailed depiction of what Gandalf, Saruman, and the other wizards are that I gave basic facts about in the last movie's reaction. 🙂 Galadriel mentioned the effects of the cloaks when they were given to the Fellowship in the last movie, so we did know. But, gosh, so much happens in these movies it is easy to forget one thing said without much emphasis in the previous movie. Brad Dourif was supremely creepy as Grima Wormtongue. But he was the voice of Chucky from those horror movies, so I suppose that's not surprising. 😛 Hama (the man who tells them that they cannot come before Theoden King so armed) obviously knows well who Gandalf is, and since he stays in place and grabs Gamling's arm preventing him from drawing his sword as the others rush to try to prevent Gandalf from approaching Theoden it seems obvious that he hopes and expects that Gandalf (who has many names throughout the realms, Mithrandir, Gandalf Greyhame, Gandalf Stormcrow, etc.) can and will overcome whatever has turned Theoden into the shell of a man that he has become. And, of course, he's right. In a movie series with so many excellent actors playing so many excellent characters, Bernard Hill as King Theoden is one of my absolute favorites. Such a deep and expansive role to play, and he does it so brilliantly. He breaks my fricking heart every single time I see his "No parent should have to bury their child" moment, and then he collapses to his knees overcome with sorrow. Oh my gosh. As others have mentioned, Tolkien was commissioned as a lieutenant in the British Army in World War I, and he based a lot of the horrible locations in these stories on things he saw during his service there. As someone else said he based the Dead Marshes on what he saw at the Battle of the Somme, when dead soldiers lay under the standing waters left by heavy rains, some obviously and horribly dead, but others looking like they were just sleeping, as the men and elves were in the Marshes. He also based Frodo and Sam's relationship on another example of military life, where senior officers often had an enlisted man as their aide and bodyguard. These men were loyal to the death in defending "their" officer, much like Sam is to Frodo. Which reminds me, incidentally, of a humorous story from WWII. General Dwight Eisenhower had such men assigned to protect him during the war in Northern Africa. One day he was going to a secure place that was considered safely behind the lines, and so he gave his security detail the day off. One young sergeant insisted on accompanying him. First the general tried to convince him to relax since there was nothing to fear, but the sergeant was adamant about staying with him. Finally the general got a bit irritated and asked him why he was refusing to follow the general's orders. The young man told him, "Last time I was home, sir, I told my grandma what my job was, protecting the most important general in Africa. She fixed me with a stare and told me that that was an important duty and she was proud of me. 'But,' she told me, 'if the general doesn't make it home you'd better not make it home either.'" General Eisenhower allowed the sergeant to accompany him on his tour. 😀

Tolkien was a scholar of ancient languages, comparative religions, and folklore. He took elements of Indo-European polytheism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism, and wove them together to provide a “religious” background to his stories. Then he took bits of plot from Homer, “Beowulf,” “The Green Knight,” the Norse sagas and Celtic folk tales, the King Arthur stories, and wove THEM together into one massive plot. There are even bits in here that look a bit like “The Wizard of Oz!” I suspect that scholars will be busy with this stuff for years, the way they’re busy with James Joyce.

You asked what the Mearas means. The Mearas are basically a breed of "super-horses" used by the kings and princes of Rohan. Shadowfax is descended from Felarof, the horse of Eorl the Young, first king of Rohan. The instrument you may be loving a lot isn’t a violin! It’s a Nordic instrument called the Hardanger fiddle! (Norwegian: hardingfele) is a traditional stringed instrument considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood. The F-holes of the Hardanger fiddle are distinctive, oftentimes with a more “sunken” appearance, and generally straighter edges (unlike the frilly, swirly F-holes of a violin). Four of the strings are strung and played like a violin, while the rest, named understrings or sympathetic strings, resonate under the influence of the other four. These extra strings are tuned and secured with extra pegs at the top of the scroll, effectively doubling the length of a Hardingfele scroll when compared to a violin. The sympathetic strings, once fastened to their pegs, are funneled through a “hollow” constructed fingerboard, which is built differently than a violin’s, being slightly higher and thicker to allow for these extra strings. The resonant strings lay on the center of the special bridge, attached to extra hooks (or fine-tuners) on the tailpiece. Carved out within the center of the bridge is a smaller secondary “bridge”, or opening, designed specifically for these resonant strings to pass through. This is where the resonance is picked up & reverberated; as notes are played, the vibrations are sent through the bridge, where the sympathetics echo those notes. • The Hardingfele’s bridge is unique compared to other bowed instruments. It is somewhat taller and wider, resulting in the strings being slightly lower and farther apart; this allows for the easy execution of double-stops (playing of two strings at once). A similar technique is seen in some American old-time and bluegrass fiddlers, who intentionally move their bridge back a few millimetres closer to the tailpiece, for better double-stops. The hardingfele is used mainly in the southwest part of Norway, whereas the ordinary violin (called flatfele, 'flat fiddle', or vanlig fele, 'common fiddle') is found elsewhere. The hardingfele is used for dancing, accompanied by rhythmic loud foot stomping. It was also traditional for the fiddler to lead the bridal procession to the church. The instrument is often highly decorated, with a carved animal (usually a dragon or the Lion of Norway) or a carved woman's head as part of the scroll at the top of the pegbox, extensive mother of pearl inlay on the tailpiece and fingerboard, and black ink decorations called 'rosing' on the body of the instrument. Sometimes pieces of bone are used to decorate the pegs and the edges of the instrument. The earliest known example of the hardingfele is from 1651, made by Ole Jonsen Jaastad in Hardanger, Norway. Originally, the instrument had a rounder, narrower body. Around the year 1850, the modern layout with a body much like the violin became the norm.

You could be surprised how far away we can actually here things in the rocks. Sound travels much faster in water, rocks, metal than in the air (more density means better transmition of the sound and thus the signal gets further and stronger). A cavalery charge can be felt from miles away by the sheer force applied on the ground. A train can be heard miles away in the rails (bandits used that to know if the train they were gonna hijack was coming); In a swimming pool, you can here all the noised of the screetching ladder on the other side despite the pool being full of people if you put your head UNDER the water. Sound travels three times as fast in water as it does in the air and five times as fast in metal than in the air. So if the ground is composed of solid rock, you will hear a company running from pretty far away. Gandalf, like Saruman, other wizards and even Sauron are technically angels. Their humanoid form can be destroyed and replaced if the gods so wish. Gandalf was sent back to replace Saruman into guiding Middle Earth against Sauron. Ultra simple explanations: Wizards (as humans call them) are not ordinary men: they are instead divine spirits sended by the Gods of Middle-Earth with the purpose to help people of good will fighting Sauron. So, when Gandalf body "died", his soul came back to the Blessed Realm (something like heaven) and the Gods game him a new and upgraded body (having Saruman betrayed his original mission falling into evil).

Left out of the movies in order not to complicate things, when Saruman first reveals to Gandalf his treachery and alliance with Sauron, he also renounces his status as "white wizard" and promotes himself to all colors. So in a way, he did create a vacancy for the job. I'm not a Tolkien expert, but I believe that the wizards here are considered a type of guardian sent by a greater power, which is why Gandalf was "sent back" with an upgrade.

Pretty close, they're essentially akin to angels, sent back to influence middle earth against the power of sauron. But their powers are limited, and memories restricted and they're not supposed to overtly oppose Sauron either, but influence and guide middle earth towards its own victory. Only gandalf does this over a few thousand years to the bitter end. Against the Balrog of Morgoth (his equal and essentially the same kind of being, but corrupted by morgoth the first dark lord (and one of the gods)) he is able to use more of his powers.

So, as others have mentioned Gandalf, The Balrog, Saruman and Sauron are all ‘lesser angels’. Sauron and the Balrog were turned evil by a the origin of all evil and darkness, Melkor, later called Morgoth. Before Sauron, a huge war was fought for tens of thousands of years against Morgoth. In it, dragons, orcs, goblins and trolls were created, mountain ranges were torn down and raised again and the world was twice plunged into everlasting darkness. When that war ended, the lesser angels (The Maiar) and the archangels (The Valar) looked at what was they had done to the world. A whole continent had been sunk, lives had been shattered and hateful scars had been left to fester. They vowed from that point on never to intervene so directly again. Then Sauron rose up to take Morgoth’s place. After Sauron’s first defeat the Valar realised that the elves would not be enough to help guide the race of men to defeating him. So the Valar sent five Maiar to Middle Earth. But because they were afraid of the sheer destruction the angels brought last time, these five Maiar were given the bodies of frail old men and their power was limited. These Maiar are Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast and the two Blue Wizards… You know I’ve quite forgotten their names… Anyway! Gandalf and Saruman’s ‘task’ is to offer their wisdom and guidance to the world. To help them grow and make the right choices so that they defeat Sauron. Saruman had obviously abandoned that task, but that is the task Gandalf was set. To guide and advise, hoping against hope that he will be listened to and that humanity will be able to destroy Sauron without also destroying middle earth.

The part about the dead marshes includes Legolas’s Father; Thranduil, & Thranduil’s father Oropher, were to join the Last Alliance in from a different angle to achieve a certain war tactic but Oropher and others got waylayed by orcs & many corrupted men which lead to eventually Oropher dying there, this loss effected Legolas’s father so very deeply forevermore. The bond between he and his son is the same bond Thranduil has with Legolas. And the braid he wears is to honour his grandfather. I believe after his death braids became less common. A sort of respect thing I believe. Both his father and Grandfather lived in Doriath(Elu Thingol’s domain[Elwë], which was heartbea of middle earth; Aside from Gondolin which held this mantle until it’s secret location was given up by a tortured elf who was the son of a very important mother who was the sister of the high king Turgon). All on a landmass called Beleriand that sunk under the sea after a set of disastrous events that lead to many greater outcomes much later on in the legendarium. This here is a whole set of stories of which also includes a quite a bit of Galadriel too but moreso other characters during this era. Of Beren And Lùthien comes to mind and Children Of Hurin!! You’ll fall in love even more after the third movie. Then you can enter into the lore videos like Moviejoob and OmarioRPG have done reaction videos too. Amazing stuff. One thing to add though is this scene resembles a lot from the other battle Tolkien was involved in called The Battle Of Somme. Look into it and tell me your thoughts.

Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves) Gandalf The Grey/White Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing. Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”

So you like Gimli. Pretty universal! There is one scene from the book that I REALLY wish we'd seen involving him and his crush on Galadriel. In the book it's in the chapter "The White Rider." Alas, this was not included even in the Extended film version of The Two Towers, but: When Gandalf the White is catching up on news with Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas in Fangorn Forest, he gives them all messages from Galadriel. The reborn wizard quotes Galadriel as saying: "To Gimli son of Glóin, give his Lady's greeting. Lockbearer, wherever thou goest my thought goes with thee. But have a care to lay thine axe to the right tree!" Gimli basically freaks out with joy , does a little dance and sings something in the Dwarvish tongue, and says something like "Now I could take on Sauron Himself!" Not verbatim, but you get the idea of how happy he was. And why wouldn't he be! Galadriel refers to herself as "his Lady" And...the Queen of Light gave Gimli an affectionate nickname--"Lockbearer"! And "[her] thought goes with [him]." What better news to a dude who's crushing hard, and, as "Lockbearer," is actually carrying three golden strands of her gorgeous, and actually magical in a way, hair! This wonderful scene from the book just makes me like Gimli (AND Galadriel!) even more!

The thing that it isn't made super clear is that Gandalf and Saruman aren't humans. They are Maiar. The same as the Balrogs and Sauron before they were corrupted by Sauron's evil master, the evil god Melkor. Though there are obviously different tiers of power amongst the Maiar. Maia can be thought of as angels with the strongest being more like archangels. There were five Maiar sent to Middle Earth in the form of wizards to observe Sauron and to manipulate things against him. Since Saruman betrayed the gods and sided with Sauron, Gandalf was sent back to take his place after he fell with the Balrog.

The connection between the Ents & Germanic&Irish folklore lies in their origins. J.R.R. Tolkien was a scholar of languages & folklore. He drew inspiration from various mythological and folkloric traditions to create his fictional world of Middle-earth. The Ents are believed to have been inspired by the ancient Germanic concept of the 'tree spirit,' which was a common theme in Germanic folklore. In many Germanic cultures, trees were believed to be inhabited by spirits or gods, and were revered as sacred. The Ents, as tree-like beings, embody this idea of the spirit of the trees. Furthermore, the name 'Ent' itself comes from the Old English word 'ent,' which means 'giant.' This is likely a nod to the Germanic mythological figure of the Jotun, or giants, who were often associated with the forests and natural world. Overall, the Ents in The Lord of the Rings are a representation of Tolkien's fascination with Germanic folklore and mythology, and serve as a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of these ancient traditions. Think of the ways of the Druid & Druidess, I know a few from long lines and others that have been initiated. (The term initiation is different in this context. As many things in our lives are initiations and graduations. Rights of passage etc.) many in a sense become like trees and even become one with trees etc.

Gandalf is what is called a Maia (plural Maiar), the equivalent of Angels, (this is why he was able to face the Balrog, they were the same level) so his human form died but his spirit basically went 'home', and then was sent back to continue his job, with more power - hence 'the white' rather than 'the grey'. In essence, he got a promotion to Saruman's position. After 'the saga', he would have gone home again anyway if they were victorious or stayed however long it took (centuries if necessary) to defeat Sauron. Going back doesn't need dying, that's just one way for his spirit to go back, he can do it physically too, or shed that form willingly (with permission to return). Saruman's betrayal meant that *he*, on the other hand, lost the right to go back.

Gandalf had the crew run off when he fell so could claim all the XP for himself when he fought the balrog, and thus he leveled up. On a more serious note, a common misconception for people who aren't familiar with Tolkien's works is that the wizards (Gandalf, Saromon, etc) aren't human (to put it simply). Also, the extended version of the first movie is highly recommended as it has certain key scenes that are missing from the theatrical release--namely the scene where the elves give the party their gifts (cloaks, food, etc)

The things under the water in the Dead Marshes were Wights. Like evil ghosts. It was an homage to an earlier scene from the book in which the hobbits are captured by a Barrow Wight, but that scene was never put in the script. This scene kind of puts the two together.

People who have not read the books and only see the movie don't realize that Gandalf and the other wizards, along with the balrogs and even Sauron are all the same race of beings, called maiar. in that universe, they are like a race of angels. The balrogs and Sauron are "fallen angels" while Gandalf has remained faithful.

"The White" is a title/position. Sarumon failed at his task and became a traitor, thus losing his title/position to Gandalf, who remained faithful. In the books, when Gandalf first visits Sarumon he notices Sarumon's robes are no longer white. Sarumon refers to himself as Sarumon of Many Colors because when you break the white light it creates a prism/many colors. Gandalf tells Sarumon that someone who breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom. So when Gandalf was resurrected he was given the title The White with all the additional powers that entails, along with the powers he already had as The Grey.

24:44 the Fell Beast on which the Nazgûl is riding is technically a wyvern (two legs plus wings), not a dragon (four legs plus wings). In the book they actually used _pterodactyls_
@hephner78

actually Wyverns are traditionally depicted as having a scorpion like stinger on their tail. Tolkiens description most closely resembled the modern day view of what a pterodactyl (sp?) looked like 65 million years ago

It has been theorized that Gollum was just the personification of the rings identity, it showed in both Isidor and Bilbo also calling it precious I do wonder, since Aragon says he is friends with Théoden, why Eomer doesn't seem to know him The bodies in the "dead marshes" are there from an earlier battle against the first dark lord, the Vallar, Melkor/Morgoth . Read the Silmarillion (the history of all of the ages before this one. A lot of questions will be answered)

Probably because Eomer wasn't born when Aragorn met with Theoden. Also, no, the Locations were the Host of the Valar fought Morgoth in the war of wrath has sunk under the western sea. The dead marshes are the location of the great battle where Gil-galad and Elendil's forces defeated the armies of Sauron before moving to into Mordor and laying siege to Sauron's fortress.

28:40 They don't show it in the movie, but when Saruman turned to madness and evil, he abandonned the title of Saruman the White and declared himself Saruman of Many Colors (or something along those lines), and upon carefull examination, his robes were no longer white, but shimering with rainbow(I think) colors. Of course, the irony is, it's actually a downgrade since white is already a perfect mix of all the colors.

Indeed but it also was signifying his full awareness of the fact that he was and will always be of the ainur who sang the world into being. As Christopher Lee stated when on the bilbo party set outside sitting with Ian McKellen and two other guys where he stated among many things about Saruman, one being his growing hatred for this limited physical form when previously he was just as elusive and formless as most of the valar were, heck even the elves didn't always see the valar much even within valinor except any that were Vanyar which includes Finarfin and his children and his mother Indis and her family line and kin specifically.
