I visited the Will Rogers home in 1968, when I was stationed at Long Beach. Will Rogers, although long deceased, was one of my boyhood heroes. When I heard of the Pacific Palisades fire, I checked the internet to see if the home survived the fire. I was saddened to learn that the Will Rogers home had burned to the ground. Will also had a cabin a ways down the hill, near the road leading to the ranch home. Although the cabin wasn't open to the public, I also visited the residents of that place. Because the cabin was surrounded by forests, we can be sure that the cabin also burned down.

Film landmarks can go up in flames. But movies once completed and released are there forever. I have a couple of times watched movies from the 1930s. Probably everybody associated with making the film is passed away. But 90 years later you can still watch the movie. As long as movies are preserved forever those film landmarks will never die even though the fire claimed them.

I lived in La for 25 years. Yes, you can see those things on film but you would be shocked at how many people come around wanting to see some location from their favorite movie. I worked at Warner Bros for many years and it was so cool when I had friends who came out from Michigan or Connecticut or wherever. They would come on to the lot and see all these buildings and stuff that they had seen in their favorite TV show or movie and it was very exciting for both them and me, just how much they enjoyed being close to these familiar landmarks.

Wizard moonshadows? I had a lot of dates at moonshadows back in the days when I lived in Santa monica. Really broke my heart, all of it is just terrible. When I first moved to LA in the mid-80s I was pretty broke, and for fun I would just drive up and down PCH and sometimes Park and just walk all over malibu. I don't think people from the rest of the rest country realized that you could just walk around in places like Malibu and it's so beautiful and peaceful usually. A good friend I used to woek with lived in Pacific Palisades until 5 years ago when he needed to go into assisted living. I never thought I would actually be happy that he was in a rest home, he would never have been able to get out of there. His home is completely gone, I looked it up on a map. His wife died of cancer if you years before he went into the rest home. The both of them worked so very hard for so long, when I worked with him he had a second job. They had really old cars, they didn't take big vacations. They had always wanted to live in Pacific palisades, it was her favorite part of Los angeles. It was such a huge deal when they were finally able to get a place, I remember the housewarming party. I was just sobbing thinking about those days and all that's gone. It's not just rich people who lost everything, there's a lot of people who were regular people and saved and saved and bought a nice place finally.

@@clarkmacgowan5114 The whole thing is so sad. It’s gonna take a while to grasp what has happened. We used to drive up and down PCH too. It was so beautiful. It’s so sad we can’t do that anymore. We ate at The Reel Inn about a month ago and that’s gone now too. But Moonshadows really hit me hard because of the sentimental memories I (we) have. The fact that our FIRST date was there (and we’re still together 37 years later) just breaks my heart. We went there for a few of our anniversaries too. I’m sure a lot of people have memories like I do 😔. What do you mean about “Wizard” Moonshadows? Or was that a typo?

It's a beautiful state - hands down. And I feel great empathy for all who lost homes - rich or poor. Where we live is our castle and so many of these people have lived in these homes for decades. I don't care how rich your are or are not, if you had to walk away from your home with only the clothes on your back - that is human suffering. Some people need to be ashamed.

I'm moving back in the summer. The thing that was great for me living in California is I grew up poor but I was in a small Beach town in northern california. We were able to go to the beach for fun. The weather was always comfortable, maybe you'd have to put on a sweater. But we didn't have the hot humid conditions that are in the south. I just spent four horrible years in Nashville and I'm telling you, I couldn't even walk outside for 6 months out of the year. I go to my mailbox and want to kill myself because I was so covered in sweat. And as a poor kid in california, we had Mass transit. We had sidewalks. We could scrounge up some change, hop on a bus and be in San Francisco at a museum. Often free for school kids. We could go into Berkeley and watch the counterculture occur before our very eyes. All those colorful hippies! Then when I moved to Los angeles, I could drive to the beach, I could drive to the canyons and Hike around. There were so many things I could do for free. I didn't need a bunch of money to have an enjoyable time of it. That's really important when you're growing up without money, or even when you're an adult without money. Some place is pretty as that is its own entertainment.

And if you hate California so much, then don't be watching any of the movies and tv shows, etc. we dish out for everyone to enjoy. And next time you buy some of your groceries in the supermarket, just don't buy it if it's from California. I'd rather see it go into the mouth of someone who has empathy, compassion. I always hate when people who are not from California and aren't involved in the movie industry talk about such things. Yes, Canada has folded awful lot of movies away because they have great tax breaks. I actually would show up in Sacramento with some of my colleagues fighting for such tax breaks. We made a little Headway but not much. But they're still making plenty of movies in Los angeles. And practically every car commercial shoots there.

There's actually serious consideration that these fires were the result of kids shooting off fireworks on New Year's eve. Firefighters were called in to put out a fire that night but now they think there might have been some tiny spots that they didn't see because they were just smoldering. But when those hot winds picked up it was enough to rekindle. What's awful is the residence of Pacific Palisades have complained about teenagers shooting off fireworks, over and over again, every city council meeting. Apparently at one recent meeting people almost came to blows. There was this real attitude from the parents of different teenagers that boys were just being boys. I lived in California so long, 25 years in southern california. I hated people who shot off fireworks. It's just too dangerous. You'd have to be really self-absorbed not to figure that out.

But, I'm sure, you will attack the Republican states, that gave Democratic cities what they wanted...autonomous freedom, to do what they wanted, whenever they wanted...and yet, those Democratic cities FAILED their constituents. Can we add Puerto Rico, where a Democratic mayor had enough money (and found a working and supplied Puerto Rican t-shirt company) to print out anti-Trump shirts, but no money to help HER citizens to get food, water, or supplies, nor have the capability to be prepared for a natural event that happens yearly since before the time of recorded weather patterns on Puerto Rico ??? I mean, I understand that some US areas do not get hurricanes, so they would naturally not be prepared for those. But, Los Angeles has an entire FIRE SEASON. What is their excuses for not being prepared ???

It has the best museums in the country except for boston, maybe New york, it has the most beautiful natural wonders, fantastic universities, and just about a million interesting and fun things to do and most of them don't even cost anything. And I worked in Hollywood for over 20 years. It was fantastic. Being on a movie set, working at a movie studio, working at a record company. Going to the grammys, the oscars, running into my favorite movie stars at coffee shops and evening grocery stores. Unforgettable memories, Unforgettable life. I feel so lucky. And also feeling a hefty dose of pity headed your way. I'm sorry that life didn't turn out like you wanted, but there's still a chance!

Oh here we go. Once again it's the religious zealot saying it's the end of times, California is so horrible. It's amazing that you call yourself a Christian and you choose to ignore the children, animals, senior citizens who make up every city in every state in this country. But you choose a bunch of people in one area to hate simply because they despise the man chosen by the Antichrist to lead this country to ruin. Yes, Donald Trump was chosen by Satan himself and you are worshiping him. Doesn't sound too Christian to me.

This is extremely upsetting to all homeowners in the Los Angeles area. I'm sure they felt somewhat secure in thinking any danger from fire could be mediated by the fire department. This was one of those events I think really couldn't be anticipated. If it was a intentional case of arson it certainly became more than that, factoring in the winds. I hope they can prove and punish such a evil person,if it was an individual. That is a possibility unfortunately. If it was a purely natural, unfortunate occurrence the city sure was unprepared. Was this a scenario of overwhelmed logistics? Not enough water sure created a problem,under- trained personnel seems to have been a factor. It could have been both. Something needs to change. Answers will come out, I'm sure we will hear many explanations. The fact remains people no matter what their walks of life have lost their homes. This hurts. It hurts anywhere it happens,no matter the reason. The large numbers involved is a shock that has stunned us all.😧 People stumble and can't find the words to express themselves. They do say things they shouldn't. Let's find our true selves, forgive, render aid,and help each other. Coming together and helping is what we should do. Unsympathetic hearts will never listen...it's a fact. Get passed them. Lots of us realize it could happen to us,this world is not safe.

One of the Chiefs at a fire department I think in Pacific Palisades said that it takes over 1,000 gallons of water just to try to control fire on one house. He said they've never had such overwhelming need for water so there was just about nothing that could be done. The other factor is that it hasn't rained in Southern California in 9 months. The other factor is these winds were faster than just about any Santa Anna as they've ever seen, between 60 and 100 miles per hour. Literally fire tornadoes. However I just heard today that the LAPD fire chief is in trouble because even though these winds we're predicted, she let a thousand staff go off shift. And she did not put fire trucks up in the most vulnerable areas. I was giving people hell for criticizing her as some DEI hire, angry that a woman was put in such a position. But I'm not going to defend her anymore because her decision not to put trucks and Manpower in position is ridiculous. I don't know how she's ever going to explain that away. They've got Fire Chiefs from other major cities in southern California who are coming forward and saying that that was a deadly error. And I do believe it was. I'm still in shock that I was 1,000 miles away from the fire zone and I was even reading it on the news that these winds were coming up and they were going to be hotter and faster than ever before. How do you get that information but not put your Manpower in trucks in place???
