In 2018 the Malibu area lost dozens and dozens of homes. This casualty disaster was huge, and yet we still have seen no really mature, adult set of new public policies. Vast (check the map for "The Summit") new housing development was continued on the hills over Palisades, and yet no hard nosed insistence upon over building super robust water systems for this very large development high up on this set of hills was included into this thing. Meanwhile in other areas dead wood was building up for many years on the forested hillsides. There will be fires. But it winds up as "consequences" if those fires are super large, or if they are lesser and nonetheless tragic. It's best to incur the costs but have LESSER wild fire. This all has to do with humans DECIDING to live on hillsides, DECIDING not to pay the costs and remove the dead wood from forests, or failing to build out robust water systems (or leaving reservoirs empty for repairs). These are the controllable DECISIONS. Public Policy.

The casualty insurance problem falls directly out from events. In 2018 a massive fire leveled a large part of Malibu with many multi-million dollar homes totally gone; this in an area heavily underwritten by major insurers. There was great litigation and fighting and there were billions paid out, so now, the future for current underwriting is also tens of billions. But the public policies which led to no hydrant water or to build up of deadwood, or to OH lines of power not going down during hurricane winds. Those are DECISIONS and they don't really relate to casualty insurance, but more to PUBLIC POLICY. Of course the insurance will have heavy difficulty actually paying out.

Currently I collect vintage computers and software, starting next year, I plan to get rid of it all. I should be able to live out of a small suit case if something like this happens. It makes sense too, with the cost of living going up, inability to afford a home, why would you anyway, just to lose it all through an act of nature? From what we have seen, it will be decades before that place returns to some semblance of normalcy. Those who were grandfathered in are likely gonna have to sell and move to somewhere cheaper.

To be cancelled with the insurance company looking at their bottom line. This shouldn't be possible. ANOTHER SHAME, why can't we get a decent percentage point for a regular savings account? banks can charge 35% on credit card interest, but nothing or .006 interest? On $350K only $12.00 a month interest? WHY SAVE ? and don't get me started on inheritence taxes of 35% when the person paid taxes on that money already as they earned it year after year. You have some plan which GUARANTEES that no such change (AGW) will happen? You need to lay out clearly this miraculous plan. I'd suggest that reality only has a few CONTROLLABLE elements. You can prohibit development in dangerous areas. YOU can mandate extremely robust water systems for dangerous areas. You can cull dead wood out of National Forests, but the rest is random and non-controllable, or partly controllable. It's not "wise" to approach only partly or speculatively controllable elements and IGNORE those pieces which are totally controllable. This is the kind of BAD POLICY which has led to this disaster. Do the things which are CONTROLLABLE, even if they cost money, even if it takes will power. Public Policy by adults.

I think this is what the issue is.........people are sooooo tied up in the labels that they're blind to the fact that a Trojan Horse has infiltrated the party and the current Political leaders are doing an inside job to destroy us. Please note that vast, dangerous fires like this happened hundreds and hundreds of years ago. THINK. This may have some relation to AGW, but this same stuff was happening long before any recorded history. So, there are only some limited controllable things which can possibly be good policy here. Fighting some world wide phenomenon to deal with things that have LOCAL, PRACTICAL aspects is BAD POLICY. We have seen the result of BAD POLICY.

The comments are so silly over the fires. Just like during hurricane season. Wish everyone luck and help your neighbors. Keep on truckin'!

Is voting blue or red making things better? No, they just keep getting worse. Wake up, politicians from both parties doesn't care about you, this country is run by lobbyists and billionaires.

Did you do a documentary on North Carolina? Lahaina? Florida? Ohio? Texas? Or just on the richest people in the world?

You clearly don't know what you are talking about since you aren't from here. Homelessness has decreased by 10%, the first double-digit decrease in at least nine years. Make-shift shelters have decreased by 38%. I can see the improvement since she took office. She also is a community activist.

Maybe it's time to rethink what infrastructure means to a community? Could our infrastructures be more self supporting and self sustaining? Could we be more self reliant? How can we build smarter?

What did we let LA become? Almost no one supports normal public schools. Letting lovely communities become gentrified clusters of strangers ? Terrible!! I am an LA native devastated by what is and has been happening to LA since the 80's.

These actors have these beautiful homes because they get paid so much. If I had their money, I'd live modestly ---- and prioritize how I would spend according to a set of values. The guy that wrote The Christmas Box ---- saw him at Tattered Cover when it was still in Cherry Creek ---- he used his money that way. It really impressed me.
