This is an awesome topic to discuss. It's insane how many younger males are gambling nowadays. No one gambled when I was in my teens and 20s. Anyone that did gamble didn't do more than buy lottery tickets. Congrats on all the channel growth.

I don't use FanDuel or any of that but I occasionally would bet on Esports through some... Questionable means. I have won exactly .50 cents. Maybe. I'd almost say Esports betting is worse but only because rigging a game is a lot easier. Thankfully I was still in school so I mostly used the pseudo currency the casino gave you. I'd probably be bankrupt if I had more time and money.

@@RaspberryRetrograde As someone who has worked on mobile ads, push notifs have been curated over decades of addiction research on how to keep a user engaged and anxious for "a hit". Saying "you can just turn it off" is the same as "why do they go so hard against tobacco and alch, just don't do it? Which is a dumb mindset that does lead to anything and actually increases the problem. US tobacco usage rates are the lowest of the developed world because of how many obstacles we have in place to make it hard to obtain.

Gambling is an addiction, just like smoking or drinking. The fact that these corporations are allowed to blast these ads to people 24/7 is extremely predatory. Especially since there are young children watching. My parents used to say “Cut off a gambler’s hands and he’ll play cards with his feet.” Nowadays smartphones make it even easier for betting agencies to get their slimy fingers on your bank account.

Best of luck with the outreach on this, you are doing good work on this series, highlighting gambling and pay day loans. My advice to everyone is “you don’t have enough hobbies.” If people have more vested interests in their lives, one of them not going your way is put in better perspective. It dulls the sting a little. Even if it’s just learning knots, drawing stick figures, or watching documentaries every Thursday night. Don’t define yourself by one thing.

@Comm0ut

Hobbies can be large fun AND useful. You're going to invest the energy in something, so why not make it improve your life? Sports are merely entertainment that distracts men from self-improvement. Hobbies can save you tens of thousands of dollars and speed your retirement. What's better than watching sweaty men who don't affect your real life? DIY is better. Anyone can learn to do anything they currently pay others to do. Like cars, motorcycles or trucks? Learn to wrench and maintain everything you own. Money saved pays for any tool you may want and you become technically knowledgeable. That kind of useful hobby just gets better over time (and is how I renovated my houses and never needed or even cared about buying a new car). I define myself by what I can DO not by worshiping other men.

@@Comm0ut That logic can apply to literally everything that isn't DIY and handiwork. It's great that you find those things an enjoyable pastime, and I'm sure it makes you very handy to be around; but not everyone wants to or even _can_ do those specific things as hobbies.

@@Comm0ut A useful hobby really has nothing to do with it. Sure, they're nice, but they aren't be all/end all. My view has always been that you should do a hobby because you ENJOY said hobby for yourself. Not for some other dude. Not for your friends. Yourself. Do it for your own sake. You'll find that certain hobbies like being a sports fan is extremely rare for your own sake.

Thanks for the video. Just turned 80. Gambled on myself 50 years ago, starting my company. That was scary enough. Phones are addictive. We are the result of 100,000 years of evolution. Before cities came 7,000 years ago, our awareness of motion or color changes was the difference between having dinner... or being another animal's dinner. Phones serve up motion and color changes every second. True that!

I got really into jewelry making and now I’m best friends with the old ladies at the bead store. They’re good people. My new concern is for the people who just got sober picking up a whole new problem through their sports game hobby. One friend wins a jackpot next to them, shows them the app, and just like that they’re hooked. This video is really important, I hope it catches on and can steer people away from this stuff before they even start, because I know for a fact that never starting is way easier than quitting down the line.

So true that many men don't have anything else to talk about. I have had coworkers who just won't talk to me, because they literally have one topic of conversation. Don't know sports? Can't be friends ☹️

Yeah this really limited my ability to socialize with a lot of the males when I was in the Navy. I felt left out because I didn't feel that I had anything to say they would be interested in and I'm presuming that they felt the same. I certainly did have some friends and contacts of both genders but overall I didn't feel that easy ability to just strike up a conversation with any single one of them in the same way I might have with a female coworker. Sometimes I felt there's something wrong with me but then I just realized that it wasn't that, they just didn't think I would be interested in talking about cars or sports or other women or their dates or etc with them. The truth is I really wouldn't have minded any of that if someone had been more outgoing, but it's true that I wouldn't have been able to share with them all kinds of inside details and stats, I just don't know sports like that and I don't follow it like that and I never have lol. I actually like sports just fine I just don't know much about them. I was a little shy back then, so I really do wish more people would have been willing to try to talk to me as I didn't feel comfortable most of the time starting the conversation. That's changed a lot since, but yea. I'm literally open to any topic of conversation even if I know nothing about it I'll just be happy to be a friendly listener. Edit: I say this a F ♀️

Same. I got a coworker and boss who are both into sports heavily and I don’t talk to my boss about anything other than work, but as soon as that other coworker comes in, they’re chatting it up about sports and it’s just not my thing. We’re all men but I’m just not crazy about sports like that.

Odd. Most men I know have plenty of things their into. With Sports just being one of them. Anime, Movies, TV Shows, Music, Cars, Motorcycles, Investments and their family. Even other less regular hobbies like building model cars/boats or collecting things. Have you actually asked what they are into or just made an assumption based on what you hear them talking about?

Man this subject means a whole lot to me. From my perspective sports betting went from that blatantly illegal backroom thing to suddenly having advertisements on unrelated channels. It has me terrified that for all the reasons I'd probably never make it in politics, being against the proliferation of this stuff is probably the biggest nonstarter and that's some confusing moral conundrum.

Great video on this! One thing I would add is regarding the "Free $100 when you deposit $5" type of advertising that most of these apps use. In some states (roughly half the states that mobile sports betting is legal), the "free money" that the app gives you can be applied as a tax write-off for the app company. States (and by extension us) are subsidizing the marketing budget for these companies.

@JiggyJones0 How exactly is it different? For simplicity please focus specifically with this context where a company has manufactured losses through their advertising campaigns that warrant tax breaks. The tax breaks result in less tax revenue, clearly, which increases the burden on other taxpayers.

It’s funny how things stay the same. Great vid. Betting companies use the “first one’s free, kid” technique with their advances and “guaranteed” first payouts. Sports betting makes these people like they’re a part of the team when they win and that’s hella scary. Edit, also wanted to mention that gambling produces way more victims than just the person gambling. A lot of people who turn to gambling do so to escape the mundane and in those cases it’s likely that a family is involved. One family member with a gambling addiction can take down an entire family.

So glad to see someone talking about this! Sports betting is getting pushed so hard now. Ads on TV, KZbin, radio, billboards, all over the fucking place, and I barely see ANYONE discussing how bad it can be. And the way the sports industry and mainstream culture has completely embraced it makes it even worse IMO. When I was still in HIGH SCHOOL I knew people my age that were addicted to this shit and losing $1000+ dollars on a single game. Most of them didn't see a problem with it. Hopefully my generation starts waking up and realizing the real nature of all these gambling companies.
