Thats exactly why I look up everything before I panic. And I use more than sources in MY country. Look everywhere, question EVERYTHING. Critical thinking is what's going to get us through this.

When I was taking AP Language and Composition (rhetorical analysis) in high school, I struggled initially. What I wish someone had told me on the first day of class was that finding the truth and convincing someone what the truth is are two completely unrelated things. One requires evidence and reasoning, the other doesn’t.

9:25 I’d have to disagree. Older people struggle to identify fake ads and accounts. That’s why they get scammed. I’m able to spot fake ads and accounts because I have anxiety and I think everyone is lying.

Honest question, what are some good points of conservatism?

It's so hard to explain to friends and family the process of understanding which sources are trustworthy and the fact that it's become increasingly difficult to find trustworthy sources has only made this so much harder. Being in software development for many years I've spent a lot of time around corporate teams, designers, etc. the goal has always been deception but I never thought it would get to this point, it will get worse. That being said, a lot of recommendation algorithms don't understand the content that is being recommended it may be reduced to keywords and suggested to people that have previously viewed content with those keywords - we give too much credit and not enough credit to these systems because the intention is not generally to steer someone in a specific direction but to show them relative content regardless of it's twist and people exploit this system regularly. The effect that this has is exponential because even small movements into one specific community may be amplified by recommendation systems to push the person into a specific community. The one thing we have to remember is that these systems are computer systems with none or very little human interaction it's bad, and it's always been bad, but it's gotten worse with the explosion of content online and it will continue to get worse.

Definitely sharing this! I do use Facebook, but it's really to police my mom. I'm 46y and she's in her late 60s. She's gotten banned 4 or 5 times for arguing with 45's supporters. I had to explain to her how the algorithm worked and about spam ads & fake products. My dad is forever sending me AI videos about foods that are supposedly good or bad for you or supplements that he sees. So yea, I gotta stay on top of the nonsense they are seeing and sharing.
