@charlesn8982 жыл бұрын
Well done! In regards to Donkey Kong you could have briefly made mention of Nintendo's little secret about the original arcade game (Ikegami Tsushinki designed the hardware and programmed the code for the game).
@charlesn898 Жыл бұрын
@@lunarvvolf9606 Yeah. The first couple thousand of Donkey Kong machines were actually converted Radarscope games (Space Invaders inspired game). As the story goes Nintendo of America made that game thinking that would be successful here in the States and...it wasn't. Desperate to sell units because the creditors were knocking on their door the president of NOA reached out to the company president back in Japan (who was his father in law) and asked him to have his people create a game for those cabinets that they could sell. The result of this is the game we now know as Donkey Kong. Those original games with the red cabinets (as opposed to the more common blue ones) are now considered to be collector's items and are highly sought after. The problem Nintendo had with ITC came about when they developed Donkey Kong Jr. Instead of going back to ITC the Big N hired another company to reverse engineer the Donkey Kong boardset/game and froze ITC out. ITC took them to court in 1983 and both companies agreed to an out of court settlement in 1990.
@ClassicTVMan1981X Жыл бұрын
@@charlesn898 Yes, unfortunately, at the time Nintendo's own staff knew nothing about program code. The first game they actually coded themselves, which was not derived from Donkey Kong's code, was Mario Brothers (1983).

Love this video (and all of your videos). Thanks for posting this. One minor thing: I *think* the sticking point was not that the ADAM could run the ColecoVision version of Donkey Kong, but that Coleco made an enhanced version of Donkey Kong for the ADAM that was closer to the arcade version than the ColecoVision version using their high speed tape drives instead of cartridges. I had an ADAM back in the 80s, and had many of the ADAM specific games, including Super Donkey Kong, Super Donkey Kong Jr., Super Zaxxon, Super Buck Rogers (the pack in game) and Dragon's Lair. All of the Kong ports for the ADAM were arcade accurate (all four arcade screens, intermissions, extra animations). It was incredible. I remember something about them being taken off the market because of the Atari problem. I don't remember details -- I was a teenager at the time, after all -- but I'm pretty sure Atari had a huge problem with the ADAM ports. I could be wrong. Thanks again for all the hard work you do on these. I love every episode you post. So good.

It probably would’ve looked less like the NES and more like the Famicom. The NES’s design and business and marketing strategies were very much informed by a crash that was largely Atari’s fault, and I don’t think Atari were removed enough from their mistakes to recognize them. They certainly never approached the success of the VCS with anything that followed, though you can’t blame that entirely on them.

Actually it did look more like the NES, just...sleeker and a little more angular. There are photos of the prototype out there.

What we did get out of this botched affair were a few NES games that Nintendo started work on but were re-assigned to a third-party, HAL America: those three games were Defender II, Joust and Millipede. These three, along with Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros., were supposed to have shipped with the Atari version of the FamiCom had the affair went smoothly. There was a seventh game that was supposed to have been part of this launch, but the title eludes me (I think it was Popeye).

@squarebegooderlife844 Sony never had any interest into entering the video game market. It was a series of events that even led them to being involved in video games that probably never would have happened if the Atari thing had happened. When Nintendo approached an employee from Sony to produce a sound chip for the Snes. That employee decided to work on it in secret because he knew his bosses had turned down anything to do with video games in the past. When his sound chip project came to light he was almost fired until one Exec who believed in him gave the go ahead. This venture was successful enough for Sony to eventually lead them to the failed deal with Nintendo for the playstation and the rest is history as they say. I believe Lady Decade has a video about it somewhere.

It's amazing how so much of history is determined not by big grand event, but tiny, seemingly insignificant twists of fate. If Atari and Nintendo had signed one day earlier, or if Coleco had picked literally any other game to show off the Adam, Atari would have gone down and dragged Nintendo of America with them.

It's interesting however but not the actual one that went ahead with Mattel who not only who produced the intellivision! Actually manufactured and distributed the nes here in the United Kingdom unfortunately couple of years later nintendo took over and forced us to change regions as Mattel consoles aren't compatible with nes version games.
@DanVzare2 жыл бұрын
Yep, which along with the popularity of the ZX Spectrum and the difference in cost between PC games on a cassette and console games on a cartridge, resulted in console games not getting a decent foothold in the UK until the unprecedented success of the Playstation. (I mean, the NES was not only way more expensive. But as far as customers were concerned, it might not even work!) If that Mattel deal had never happened, I suspect console games would've become a lot more popular in the UK a lot quicker than they did. Perhaps the Dizzy franchise would've been an NES classic with a poor PC port, instead of a PC classic with an obscure NES port.

@cartman4142 жыл бұрын
Not anymore. And certainly not during the Wii era. And it turns out Nintendo only allowed Sony/Kutaragi to go forward with the SNES CD-ROM, and only after Sony told them it would be for everything but games. Nintendo made the mistake of not getting it in writing in the contract. Sony formed Sony Imagesoft mere months after the CD-ROM contract was written. That form of media was used in an e-book reader and was compatible with the SNES CD ROM prototype, to show how far Sony was planning on going with the new disc media. UMD, MiniDisc, CompactFlash, Betamax, Blu-ray... sound familiar? Sony would have made like bandits at Nintendo's expense. No wonder Yamauchi bailed. Unfortunately the optics couldn't be worse for Nintendo.

What do you care about Nintendo's finances? As far as you're concerned, you got competition in the space for the past quarter century with both companies putting out some legendary games.
@cartman4142 жыл бұрын
@@user-tl4fi6oy8d Sony themselves are debatable, as their legacy leans towards more cinematic, less gamey AAA titles. And the point isn't so much regarding money as it is about being pushed out of the gaming space. Sega wasn't able to manage, sadly, even though Nintendo was.

And there's yet another timeline where this actually happened, Atari then started to believe they were the reason behind the success of the NES, the deal fell through by the time the 16-bit era came, Nintendo released the SNES like in our timeline and Atari made their own 16-bit console which failed horribly, and we somehow end up back in this clown world timeline.
