Having been married to a native of Peru I was fortunate to go there many times. One of my wife's Brothers was a General in Perus army & provided us with military guide from the Dept of Antiquities. We toured all of the famous sites at that time in the late 1990s. Relgarding Machu Pichu & Bingham we were told that he was guided to the ancient site by a young boy who lived in Aquas Calinte at the base of the mountain in the curve of the river. Anyone who has been there will agree that you arrive there by train & can't tell where the city is until a bus gets you halfway up the mountain. So I agree that Bingham was led to the ruin & in fact discovered nothing.

so he didnt discover anything , he just followed the local tour guides!

Those tour guides probably didn't know what it was. So, your point or question is invalid. Please try again.

Exactly. He went there. If he went to London, he would have said he’d discovered Buckingham Palace! This is Hollywood history.

Save your pennies and go! The whole region of Cusco and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking. Once there food and accommodation is at about a third of the cost of the US.

Hate this title... It was not lost if two local natives show you where it is

Really? Did the world find out about it from the locals? Did they go to the press? The locals knew there were ruins there, but they didn't know anything more than that. They didn't know what it was and they didn't care because there were ruins everywhere.

It's peru. Like peru is covered in ruins.

Yeah he at most identified it. Its not like he intepreted a local legend to find it or anything. Just stroll up with your guide lol

Please remember that this was a very ethnocentric time in history . If the whites didn’t know where it was , then it was “found “ ( discovered ) by white explorers . By logical extension , it must have been “lost “.

No, it is necessary to stop evil from time to time. And war should be so violent and horrible that no one would ever want to start one.

I don't think so. He did not discover since locals were farming their. Sad.

Agustín Lizárraga found it 9 years before Bingham did, and someone else did in 1891, but because those were local Peruvians, they don't get the credit because Bingham made it known to the rest of the world which is why Bingham gets credit.

"It was only a peruvian ...."? Do you mean it was not a privilege white man?? Lizarraga should be the name remembered
