No kidding. Still try figure out the timeline with 'Wind Waker's' great flood and Ocarina's time miss happen with the tunics in the depths. LOL The lava will have special spot in my heart. The first time I played, I'd stocked grabbed everything I could when I was in the sky and on the way to the story. However, when I got underground it was 'Subnautica' all over again. And kind of got distracted and started exploring on what I had. Pain, was I didn't realize how important portable pots were when supplies are running low. Got around under Hebra was ok, had spicy food and warm pants and made a discovery that there is no blood moon underground, ergo no monsters respawn, but again, no parts and no weapons, or should I say "handles" for supplies. Stahls will always respawn. Remembered a tip I heard about mapping the roots and learned that the rivers above ground were walls underneath. Pretty much feeling around in the while trying to find the light switch in the dark. LOL Few spots were left like around the lakes and islands to the east, but ending point was at the lava zone. Too few supplies and what was available because I haven't advanced the story, and later find out I accidentally cheesed it by finding those locations before doing the story. Didn't activate factories, but by visiting them the story is going along. So had to come up topside, end of the moleman run. Got lost found my way, visited all the floating islands, came back to lava area with better equipment and before activating the Goron mission I planned on coming from the bottom to the top of the volcano. Used all my Zonai know-how and proceed to go up. Trial and many deaths, getting past fiery the pillars and what do I find? The top is covered. Why do I do this to myself?

What if Gorondia was where all the Gorons were during the events of SS, since we only saw a couple of them during that game. Then, after people from the sky resettled on the surface, Gorons began to return to the over world as well. Then it's possible that Ganondorf's attack on the Goron settlement disabled their means to return underground, so they built a new home on and around Death Mountain.

I think that the Fire Temple became Goron City after Ocarina of Time, hence becoming a huge mining operation. Would have been nice to find the entrance Darnuia used to use to connect to the first Goron City to Death Mountain, maybe even finding a way through it and ending up somehow finding some teleportation magic to send you to the Lost Woods since it was also connected to Goron City through its tunnels.

As someone who's actually a fan of the dungeons in this game, watching videos about the lore of their original purpose is truly fascinating. It makes me see them from a more complex point of view. While it's true that they may not be as complex as other dungeons from previous games to some people, I found that the Lost Gorondia is an exception to this along with the Mural's Myth and Construct Factory. It is a complex system of elevators, tracks, and switches that culminate into a solid dungeon experience if you don't cheese everything by using the paraglider. I remember it taking me forever to figure out how to hit the gong behind a gate. It ended up being the last gong I activated in the dungeon since I didn't know what to do. Scaling the dungeon with the minecarts instead of cheesing it with the ascend ability and paraglider was really rewarding. In fact, doing all the dungeons in TOTK is pretty satisfying when you try and use ascend and the paraglider as little as possible and only when you feel it's necessary to do so.

I'm interested in how does death mountain in tears of the kingdom work as a volcano. You fall through the top and it's just a hollow piece of mountain with the lava so way down. How does the lava flows all the way up and comes out from the mountains top? Does it fill the entirety of the depths with lava before erupting? Does the lava recessing is the reason how the depths are now accessible? Are there pipes of lava taking it to the top of the mountain and death mountain is actually a fake volcano built by the gorons? I'm confused.

Oh no Earth Temple and Fire Sanctuary of SS are different structures from the Fire Temple of ToTK. 😆 The Fire Temple of ToTK was built underground and stayed underground, it was never constructed on the Surface. Gorondia is an underground labyrinth City where the Gorons originated from. This predates SS showcase of the Gorons, as the Gorons in that game are decimated and declined heavily with only 2 or 3 Gorons left on the Surface as far we know.

I think it's also mentioned in the game, unless I'm mistaken, than Gorontia was also known as the birthplace of the Gorons. Which suggests that, at a certain point in Totk's history, the Gorons may have lived in the depths even before the arrival of the Zonai and the founding of the new Kingdom of Hyrule.

Would that mean that Gorondia existed under the Surface of Skyward Sword? I suppose before Demise, there were civilizations. And we do see Gorons in Skyward Sword, so it would make sense.

@@lady_lexi_ This is why I place ToTK's backstory before the events of SS and not after. It makes more sense that the races and history we observe in that game predate the ones seen in SS. Gorons build Gorondia => ToTK Backstory => Gorondia destroyed => Demise birth from Ganondorf's Malice => SS's backstory => Goron's divided and decimated => SS. I even have a theory that Hylia is in fact Sonia and Rauru's child inheriting the power of Light and Time (her element seen and used in SS), and the Zonai's longetivity of lifespan existening for thousands of years. I believe Hylia was sent to the Heavens or hidden somewhere unseen.

@heoristb211ZTBisHere Except Demise directly BEGINS the curse of the three main character's reincarnation. ToTK HAS to happen after SS. PLUS there WAS no Hyrule in SS, at least not the kingdom itself. Gorondia could have existed for thousands of years before Demise, remember, there was a massive war WAY before SS, but not the same one that was in Tears' backstory.
@ZeldaTheoristb211ZTBisHere

@@captin3149 But here is thing? If ToTK Backstory happens AFTER SS? Then how come neither Rauru NOR Sonia know about the Master Sword, a weapon used to seal the Demon King of the SS era, and how come Zelda doesn't find the weapon in the Past if allegedly exist after SS and well known too at the end of SS? The only way for ToTK backstory to make sense is if it takes place BEFORE SS, since there is no Master Sword nor Triforce at all! The Secret Stones when swallowed turns into a God/Dragon but without a mind. But the Triforce is not even talked about nor used at all. If Rauru of ToTK built the Temple of Time and founded Hyrule? He would've used it knowing it properties of wish making and just wish his wife, Sonia, alive again. Because of this, I'm inclined to say ToTK Backstory is before SS and not after. The events just doesn't add up taking place after not before. Also, the Zonai predate the Hylians, and they were there BEFORE the Hylians arrived!

The boss should also be considered. Each tribe had to seal the monsters sent by Ganon and subsequently abandon those areas. The possible locale of where old Kakariko could have been on the modern map. Or why Lon Lon Ranch is no longer on a raised plateau with rock walls surrounding it. Loved trying to figure out where old settlements of the Ocarina of Time used to be. Especially the Fire Temple. I went crazy over trying to figure out where the Spectacle Rock could have been from Ocarina of Time (the fact that Gorondia is made of primarily two large buildings next to each other drives my theory brain wild).

in both BOTW and the memories in TOTK we see death mountain being an active vulcano, making the path through the vulcano impossible to access. so another reason the ancient city was abandoned might have been the collapse of possible entrances, or respectively, exits towards the surface. from one goron quest we know they (might be) born on the surface in caves when a certain event happens, so they might have crawled back up to the surface to repopulate and lost their ways back to the deeper mines.
@DarkZerav

I would like to add some tidbits, one from BOTW: In the memories, the Goron Champion feels troubled when the mountain trembles, as if to erupt. While not clear, I always thought that that indicated that the monsters where more plentiful inside the depths of the crater at Death Mountain, the same was also heavily implied by the memory where "lore accurate" Link defeats a whole platoon of monsters, including 3 Lynels, on a side of Death Mountain. And now in TOTK we know that the depths are vast and full of monsters. Another tidbit, this from TOTK: The lady journalist in Goron City claims that she will find about Gorontia, the underground city where Gorons used to live, but so far all gorons feign ignorance whenever the name is mentioned. All of this add to the theory that gorons used to live there, but had to resettle after they were overrun by monsters

Love imagining what Gorondia might have looked like in its heyday! The only thing I wonder about is how they would have gone back and forth from the depths to the surface. The Zonai ascend points/pilllars dotted around the depths imply that the ascend ability was not exclusive to Rauru, but something many or all Zonai could do, allowing them to go back and forth (or via platforms/elevators like the one that brings you to the construct factory). Obv Gorons don't have Zonai magic though. Would they have built mine carts all the way up death mountain crater? Were they stuck down below in the depths until they met the Zonai, and then they collaborated on tech that allowed Gorons to reach the surface for the first time?? Mysteries upon mysteries...

I wonder if the temple bosses were active in the past during Ganondorf's plundering of the kingdom. Marbled Gohma plus an army of other monsters would've been perfectly capable of destroying the gorons and driving survivors to abandon their ancestral home, and maybe that's how the goron Sage died. Maybe the goron Sage went to face Marbled Gohma and was defeated, and that's how his Secret Stone ended up down there, guarded by Marbled Gohma. Then the Chasms were sealed off and the Depths became inaccessible, so Marbled Gohma wouldn't have been disturbed again until the Upheaval. The other bosses IMO had to have been defeated by their respective Sages because the effects they cause are things which would have made life difficult for the other races, Gohma is unique in that it only started affecting the surface after the Upheaval opened up the Chasms again And unlike the other temples, there's no designated altar for the Secret Stone to be placed in in the Fire Temple. When we first enter the arena, Marbled Gohma is hanging upside-down guarding the Secret Stone which is just floating in the ceiling, and when we beat it, the Secret Stone hovers in the center of the room. That the other temples have altars designed to hold the Secret Stones suggests to me that the other Sages lived long enough to be able to place their Stones in those altars (before the Water and Wind Temples were concealed along with the rest of the sky islands, and before the Lightning Temple was sunk beneath Gerudo Desert)

Overall a really good video. Still, I feel like you skipped over one piece of the puzzle. Gorondia is in the Depths, not merely deep within Death Mountain. I've been thinking of the Depths as a netherworld where spirits filter through or stay in limbo before moving on. How amazing must the Gorons have been to match the mining capabilities of the Zonai. If I had to guess which came first to the Depths, I would have to say Zonai due to their advanced tech and whatever connection to divinity they have. It could be very interesting to look into areas of collaboration between the Zonai and other races by how much their ancient artifacts overlap.

Gorondia was one of the places in Tears of the Kingdom I wish people talked more about because I thought the lore-thirsty Zelda fans would get lit (no pun intended) about the mere mention of the city immediately. Same with the Spring of Revival area. I was fixated on the city for a bit, my hunger for more knowledge about it was more insatiable than a Goron’s hunger for rock sirloins. It frustrated me that it was just kinda talked about, but not really made a big deal (which I understand because most Gorons probably thought it was mythical) and not mentioned much anymore after clearing the temple

I can't help but think that the Gorons in Skyward Sword exclusively live down there. We run all around Eldin in that game and don't find any settlements of theirs. Surely it's because Skyward Sword happens even earlier than the ancient past in Tears of the Kingdom, and as such, the Gorons just hasn't moved up and started to settle the surface yet.

When i first read that little goron kids dialog i was really hoping the fire temple or Gorondia was going to actually be a more detailed and expanded Goron City from OOT. Like pretty mush the same layout just sort of blown up to be proportional. Goron city in OOT was small but i always figured that was a limitation of the technology of the time. I would have reallt loved for OOT goron city to gave made a reappearance as the fire temple aka Gorondia 😢

Personally I don't think it fell until a thousand years until the time of the ancient hero shown on the tapestry. If the statues are of the goron Sage who stood by King Raru then it stands to reason it was inhabited afterwards. The sages didn't die in the fight against Ganondorf hence why they are instead found in their home lands. Also Ganondorf was a Gerudo ruling the Gerudo desert. The villages mentioned are literally outside his doorstep unlike the goron on the opposite side of Hyrule. I think the a catastrophe where Ganon attempted to return was when the Gerudo left the city. The level of Tech the Gorons actually have down there makes me think the Gorons heard about the ultimatum given the Sheikah and decided to hide there tech before they got into trouble as well. Knowing the 'temple' was where Link needed to train to save everyone they likely didn't want to risk it being dismantled or destroyed like much Sheikah tech was.

I wish they would do something to flesh out the history and lore of the depths more somewhere down the road... even if it is in a future game that is unrelated to TOTK. They have hinted at precursor species to the dominant surface species originating or at least having some related species that were in depths in the past. Were they found by the Zonai in the depths and used as labor? Were they brought to the surface and uplifted by the Zonai? Were they an offshoot of the surface species that had sought refuge in the depths from prior destructions of Hyrule? There are so many possibilities that it is really interesting to think about it.

As someone who believes in BotW/TotK taking past in a split after SS, I'd say this "lost" city was the home of the roaming Gorons we meet in SS since it's never shown where they came from. Eventually the Goron would rebuild a new city on the surface since they become more close with the other races.

I would theorize that the lightroots require periodic reactivation, hence why Link needs to activate all the lightroots found in the depths. And since the activation requires being a Zonai authorizer, with the Zonai extinct, keeping the depths just well lit wasn't worth the effort to continue full time habitation

While we’re on the topic: How come the depths weren’t flooded with lava? In BOTW, there was lava all over the surface of Death Mountain, meaning it had to somehow travel up to the top of the mountain from the core of the Earth. The problem is, in TOTK, there is no evident path for the lava to follow. Realistically, it would have to fill up the depths before it could reach the surface.

So the head canon I concluded to was due to the overall absence of Gorons at death mountain in the SS era & in OoT how Gorons patron deity type being, being a hostile revived being (Volvagia) perhaps Gorondia was the original home of the Gorons however the more corrupt the depths became they had to head upward and in a miscommunication saw Volvagia as a threat or vice versa leading to a Goron killing volvagia because it's unlikely any Goron does things knowingly to harm someone it's not in their nature but accidentally I could see being the case

I don't quite understand how Gorondia even exist... or more specifically how Death mountain is a giant volcano that doesn't actually connect all the way to the source of magma. essentially if Gorondia were to surge with lava and erupt, it wouldn't shoot UP through Death Mountain, It'd fill up the depths amd spill out of the small crag at the bottom. Death Mountain would have been formed by being a place where deep under ground the earth crashed against itself and push upward to the surface, and leaving vent where magma pushes up. At the very least it implies that the Depths are not a natural formation. However the worst (or depending on your perspective most interesting) part is that Death Mountain was FULL of lava in BOTW. My question is once again, HOW can Death Mountain fill with lava if its not sealed at the bottom? I really don't think this is something Nintendo thought about... however it coincides with another inconsistency of the Depths that has an interesting yet contrived answer. We asked why they just deleted all instances of shiekah technology with barely any explanation, and while there's no sufficient lore answer as to why, there's a perfect mechanical explanation... the old chambers of the shrines were literally down there, in the depths. And this corroborates with the fact that a lot of holes to the depths line up with the old locations of shrines. Death Mountain is conspicuously not filled with lava, and simultaneously the lost city of Gorondia is uncovered, and on top of that the shiekah structures disappeared. Since there's little to no evidence to the Upheaval breaking away any sort of stone wall structure around Gorondia... perhaps the walls around Death Mountains font were sheikah made? And from there we might make one other assumption, because we don't know why the depths were forgotten and sealed away just like we don't know why Gorondia was lost, but working backward from how the Shrines were built to fill out the depths... its entirely possible that for whatever reason the Sheikah were the ones that sealed of everything in the depths including Gorondia. Course that opens another can of worms because the techy sheikah don't supposedly predate OOT or TP, and Death Mountain still doesn't go to the depths... so like is the "ancient" Hyrule that Rauru founded even the original, or did even those events come long after TP? Because theres no way that the Depths existed in this form during SS, OOT, or TP. Edit- actually I just remembered the lava falls coming from the ceiling of the depths... they are totally implying that theres a level of naturally formed lave between the surface and the depths... that frankly ridiculous, like... no, I know its a world with magic and gods and they flooded Hyrule that one time, but HOW, HOW does that work...

Interesting theory. I was thinking Gorondia was intentionally sunken and abandoned in order to help hide and keep the tear safe for when Link and friends would need it per Zelda’s discussion with the Goron sage of old. It does seem to match up geographically and in purpose with the Gordon mines in Twilight Princess, as opposed to the fire temple in OOT, though. Especially with the presence of Spectacle Rock, which is more properly located to where the OOT Temple of Time was. Thanks for another well done video.

The economic and logistical realities which likely prevailed in the immediate aftermath of Ganondorf's sealing would seem to support your conclusion. With both the Goron population and those of the races with which they traded having, uh, contracted rather sharply, shall we say, maintaining the operation in the Depths, including the necessary supply lines, would've been a waste of manpower -- er, Goronpower, I guess? -- at a time when it was at a premium, and to no real benefit when the precipitously reduced demand for their products could presumably have been met by lower-intensity operations at (or at least much nearer to) the surface.

This is an assumption that many Gorons still lived in the depths during Rauru's era. I'm skeptical. Given how the Zonite mines and smelting operation pre-existed Rauru's kingdom. Even by the founding era, most of these mines were likely abandoned and only a handful of constructs were operating what was left of smelting operations. We would have to go back to pre-founding further in the past where the Zonai likely used the indigenous races as labor for the mining and smelting operation before the Zonai had perfected their Zonai technology and replaced indigenous labor with automation in the form of robot constructs. "They took er jerbs!"
