What do you think happened to Hyrule's original castle? 🤔

My theory is that it was destroyed during Ganondorf’s assault on hyrule, otherwise why else retreat to the forgotten temple to retrieve the secret stones? It was a last resort.

The room of awakening was definitely located where the shrine of resurrection was on the Great Plateau. The artbook makes it a lot more obvious. The castle is located on the cliff above the shrine of resurrection, so yeah, the room of awakening must have been part of the original Hyrule Castle. I think the ruins on the rest of the sky island are more likely the ruins of whatever Zonai Hyrule Castle Town there must have been.

I feel like it was a missed opportunity by not having the castle in the Garden of Time. Like imagine if the Zonai ruins for the whole Room of Awakening island were actually the remains of the castle; I think that could have been so dope bc they could have done it in such a way where it wouldn’t even be obvious until a second play through where you had seen it in the memories 🤤

6:20 no prophesy required - Zelda holds the Master Sword in the past, which she picked up from a portal at the Temple of Time. Zelda also knows that she will have to protect the Temple of Time from decay in order to maintain a time loop. Wherever she ultimately decided to put the Temple (underwater, in a desert, it doesn't matter) Zelda knows Link will one day be there to hand her the damaged sword. So she decides to put the Temple in the sky. She knows from BOTW that it's safe as only dragons are ever up that high (they disappear into the skies once a day).

I love hyrule castle in botw and totk such good theming really gives it a mysterious aura. With the idea of the room of awakening I feel like it is unlikely due to most of the sky islands being in the sky already in the past, the water temple and diving structures are already in the sky, however the temple of time is in the sky so room of awakening could still be hyrule caste

Also, the original castle could have been deconstructed to use the quality stone for the new Hyrule Castle, especially with it being located on a river plain and that hard rock being far away for masonry purposes. But the key, prophecy needed spaces could have been brought to the sky island portion, but it would make more sense why there are NO ruins.

I think that the castle is now in the depths, at least in some form. Looking at the original castle's location in the overworld, it seems to be directly above the shrine of resurrection. If you go to that location in the depths, you find the secret spring of revival, a suspiciously large Zonai structure that we don't know much about. Is it possible that this structure could be tied to the castle?
@tossingturnips

question why do you think that the castle is on top of the shrine of resurrection
@johnloewen4602
@johnloewen4602 9 ай бұрын
look at the shot at 2:21 in the video. The castle is sitting on a raised section of land next to the temple of time. Assuming that the original temple of time in this shot is in roughly the same place as the "new" one in the modern era (which it is, as we can see by lining up the surrounding landscape), it makes sense that this raised area is the section of land behind the entrance to the shrine of resurrection. You can also see the BOTW title cutscene area (at the opening to the shrine of resurrection) right in front of the castle. So it's less "on top of" and more "directly behind" the shrine. @@darkdagger5237

@@tossingturnipsI think the structure for the secret spring of revival pre-dates Hyrule’s refounding by a good few hundred if not few thousand years! And that the castle was built around that location for specifically that reason. It’s unknown just how long the zonai had been on the surface of Hyrule for before Rauru’s time but Ganondorf does say that his people have been around for a very long time in the throne room

Well, I'm sold. I think this a great explanation. I am so, so disappointed Nintendo said there won't be DLC, which I fear means the end of the Wilds era. I really think there's enough for another game, although I'd think it'd have to be a prequel. Even the Calamity 10,000 years ago could give us more answers about questions raised in Tears of the Kingdom.

There's so much unexplained in TotK. The presence of the Rito in the memories and the fact that Rauru is the first king of Hyrule, the blood connection between Zelda and Sonya, Ganondorf's suspension from his fight with Rauru till his unearthing by Zelda and Link, why Zelda travelled by in time when she fell into that abyss, why the original temple of time ascended. And Eonuma says there's no DLC? With all those loose ends?
@Fuzzypaws
@Fuzzypaws 9 ай бұрын
I think you're probably right about it being the large structure where Link wakes up. It even seems the appropriate horizontal distance from the Temple of Time, when comparing the shot of both of them in the memories. Moreover, Rauru himself seems confused at first about everything being in the sky, it seems like he instinctively teleported with Link to a familiar location, which makes sense that it would be his old castle. I just wish we could explore more of it later in the game / in a DLC, get access to Mineru's old library, etc.

There is actually a pretty simple explanation for it's state of decay. The last time we clearly see it intact in a memory is when Ganondorf claims Sonia's sacred stone. He then begins his war on Hyrule. In the subsequent memories the king and sages are holding up in the forgotten temple and then at the sealing chamber. The most likely explanation is that the castle was one of Ganondorf first targets, it was besieged and probably mostly destroyed, forcing the survivors to relocate to the forgotten temple. What small glimpse we do get of it when Zelda becomes a dragon is far away and only the outside. It could be that the palace was too heavily damaged and that the very attempt to raise it into the sky after Ganondorf attack caused it to finally collapse into ruins. I can only assume that Ganondorf didn't destroy the temple of time because he wanted to use it for the power within.

Hey Adam, I consider this spot too but ended up ruling it out because of the huge tree husk above it. Assuming that tree was flourishing back in the time of Rauru, then I think it would have been visible from the view of the Great Plateau we saw in the Gerudo Assault. More interesting thought is if we look over at the frozen area of the Great Sky Island. Just past the shrine where you get Ascend, there is a large stone structure near a dispenser. On top of that stone are three sets of tracks, and the stone is fractured. If you look at the top of the Island where the Room of Awakening is, there is another set of tracks and fractured stone. I think the Room of Awaken was originally lower in the sky attached at that point... or perhaps the Great Sky Island was higher in the sky and has been gradually sinking since they are running out of Zonaite in its mine. You're idea that the Room of Awakening is part of the castle makes sense, but after rather extensive investigation, I've ruled it out.

I always thought the building under the modern castle was the Rauru and Sonia era castle. The floor pattern where Sonia died is very similar to where you dive down to the final battle, and there is a lot of building down there. And even though details of the sages’ battle against Ganondorf is completely obscured, it makes sense to me that he would have taken the castle when Rauru and the sages and to run off and hide in the forgotten temple. So during the attempt to take back the castle, Rauru instead sealed him. Instead of disturbing the seal, they just moved and sank the whole thing as far down as they could.

It must have been a weird thing to see Ganondorf and Rauru sealed when they were building the new Hyrule castle. Can't imagine seeing that when they were having to build around them in order to keep the area a secret from the generations to come. Cause you have to go down a pretty significant distance to get to the chamber. Must have taken a really long time to build it
@BriarBeeBenson
@BriarBeeBenson 9 ай бұрын
I think the chamber already existed prior to Ganondorf’s sealing, that Rauru, Mineru and the rest of the sages lured him into that place that was built by their ancestors, hoping that it would give them the upper hand. And then Hyrule Castle as we know it now was simply built over the top of it like a plug? I know that the older more zonai-looking structures go further down, like the stone tablet that says why the castle was built there but for the actual chamber itself? Like the ruins Link and Zelda walk through at the very beginning of the game? I think they were always there and then the murals were later added

Great theory! The room of awakening doesn't represent anything else in particular in the distant past so it stands to reason that it was a part of the castle. I'll add to your theory: The rest of the more modern medieval era architecture on the Great Plateau would have required massive amounts of stone, like the temples, roads/paths and the plateau’s stone walls all the way around it. We don't have reason to believe that these medieval structures were built in Rauru’s era, so when a later generation of Hylians built the more modern structures, they could have taken the stone rubble of the original castle and re-purposed the stones for parts of the modernized medieval designs.

The answer is (most likely) the "original" Hyrule Castle was deconstructed and used to build the current Hyrule Castle. Reasoning: * Same base color. * They MUST have been in a hurry as they'd have wanted to protect Rauru's seal on Ganondorf. So mining NEW materials would've taken too long. * Plenty of other reasons I won't go into on a tiny 15-minutes break at work. Later, peeps. 👍 A better question I'd like answered is WHO ruled Hyrule after Sonya & Rauru died within days of each other with no sign of a direct heir and how can we assume Zelda is a DIRECT descendant of Sonya when there was never any sign of a direct heir before or after Sonya & Rauru died?
@javiervasquez625

It's pretty clear that Rauru and Sonia MUST have had at least one son/daughter who's bloodline lead to the birth of Zelda's grandmother, mother and herself and we simply didn't see them during the memories for the simple fact they were not _relevant_ to the events surrounding the Imprisoning War. Do remember that Nintendo has rarely ever bothered in delving into the personal lives of their characters to bother showing their relatives in any concievable way. ¿Do we ever see Link's Dad or Mom across the series? ¿What about Zelda's mother for that matter? ¿What about Ganondorf's parents, have they ever been relevant in his story for Nintendo to show them at any point in the game? Just because Zelda happens to be Rauru and Sonia's blood descendant that doesn't justify Nintendo been FORCED to show their children in order to further aknowledge that fact.

I've been wildly interested in the original castle as well, and I've tried digging out where it went too. Wanted to share my thoughts The Room of Awakening was likely built after Rauru and Sonia died. We've seen evidence of Zonai architecture appearing after Rauru and Sonia's time (the room behind the Mother Goddess Statue in the Forgotten Temple). I believe Zelda would have had this room built for Link before she.. did what she did.. knowing what she knew about the Shrine of Resurrection. That area could be part of the original castle, but it's an odd inclusion for the Zonai prior to Zelda's arrival. I have scoured the GSI looking for anything that resembled something we saw in the memories. I think some of the ruins in the snowy area are interesting, because the castle was located partially in the region of the Great Plateau that eventually froze over. No obvious indicators, but there's significantly more ruins there than anywhere else on the GSI. The ruins outside the Room Awakening personally don't seem to line up with a 2-story castle with a massive throne room, but without any evidence, it's possible!

In Breath of the Wild, the Great Plateau has ruins of what appears to be Ocarina of Time's Castle Town, and in Tears of the Kingdom, it is highly implied that Rauru's Hyrule Castle was there. So my guess is that Rauru built his version of Hyrule on the ashes of the old one, since Breath of the Wild is set so far in the future, after countless battles against evil, with Hyrule being destroyed and resurrected countless times.

Very unlikely for that been the case as Rauru's Hyrule was founded on a landmass which looks radically _nothing_ like any of the Hyrules we've seen across the timeline prior suggesting the current Hyrule was founded in a completley different location to the ones in past games. "Hyrule" isn't a specific place within the surface of the Zelda world but simply a name given by it's many inhabitants wherever they go to refound and restart their kingdom. The Minish Cap's Hyrule looks nothing like Four Sword's Hyrule, Ocarina of Time's Hyrule looks nothing like Four Sword's Hyrule, Twilight Princess's Hyrule looks slightly similar to Ocarina of Time's due to the kingdom having moved northeast, Four Sword Adventures's Hyrule looks nothing like Twilight Princess's as it looks like an *island* in the middle of the ocean and the same thing can be said of all the Hyrules seen in the Downfall Timeline. It's clear that Rauru's Hyrule is completley independent from the kingdoms we've seen in past games as the geograhy does not fit whatsoever when compared to each iteration across the series.

I think the room and island of awakening is meant to lead to the depths, the large spiral stair room leading to a zonait holding area where crushed zonait would be held before being refinish just above (the area in there that I am referring to is the final large room were you get the archaic leggings, there are two similar room designs can be found in the forgotten foundation and once contained a now broken staircase). It is still possible this was part of the castle though. I do wish we started is a broken, decaying and crumbling Zonai palace though, with faded and tapered banners, rugs, and furniture. It can still have what we got in the end, just a bit lower. It can have "many" rooms and passage and two possibly wardrobe rooms with the full archaic set. I can imagine there being rooms broken and leading out to the sky. To allow new players to not get overwhelmed, the teleport function can always be on, and a single red carpet leading the player down the right path. Or it can be on the main great skyland. Maybe in the giant central hole, facing twords the temple of time. It can be a little more guarded than the rest of the island but have many rewards and riches and many ways around it. It can also connect to the flux construct allowing it to feel like a proper boss for the mini dungeon that is the great skyland. Also, having it not be required allows for more freedom, someone can avoid it and get through the skyland the way we did or the temptation of seeing what's there could overtake someone to check it out.

If we see the Deku Tree.... we dont. And we cant tell if it was in its OG spot from Ocarina (or better yet Wii U Trailer Reveal before it became a switch game) I assume the Deku Tree moved via magic too. As we also see the Dueling peaks as one mountain in the past. It could have been repurposed into the underground ruins! if we look at the reveal trailers we saw a similar looking entrance to the geoglyph at 3:46 Feng Shui allows link to travel through the planet, and we see sky island chunks do the same in the surrounding enviroment, stuck inbetween things. the Castle is underground. I dont think its in the sky. its under ground but we cant see it due to 1. the fact it was built over like the zonai strucure in minerus quest to go to the spirit temple. and for 2. It could have been split apart. Part of it was in the sky, part of it was underground and repurposed? It is pretty clear where the original castle is: As we could see on one of the first TotK trailers, Link and Zelda entered the original castle to investigate the gloom. The shape of that building is very similar to the geoglyph. Then, in other screenshots (when still in development), we saw a lot more of sky islands (remember that area above the Tundra Plateau). After so many time developing the game, Aonuma and Fujibaiyashi decided to put a full and unnecessary Depths map in to the game's memory (instead, they could have only worked with small Depths areas such as the Hyrule Castle, the mines, Yiga chasm, Great Plateau, labyrinths and Spirit Temple, for example, which would be way more interesting. 80% of the Depths are nothing more than more of the same, repetitive landscapes, etc, which adds nothing to the game). Due to this, they had to remove many of the sky islands and probably one of the removals was the Zonai Castle... The idea of exploring the depths of the Hyrule Castle was great, but we could have one more and improved dungeon inside the Zonai Castle, for example, which would be amazing. So the answer is: the original castle is located on the deleted files on Zelda team office computers, unfortunately :(

I feel like this is probably what happened. Or at least something similar. We see in the memories that the Rauru Gang made their HQ at the forgotten temple, which is all the way across the map from the plateau. They probably did so because Ganondorf and his allies had already infiltrated the castle as seen in the memories, meaning it was no longer safe. The strange part though is that Ganondorf seems to have started his assault on Hyrule at the breach of demise, meaning he went from the castle to the breach for... reasons? It's a bit odd. Poetic, but odd. I think we'll eventually get a timeline of events in the form of a fanbook like with Creating a Champion and maybe we'll also get some new info.

Aproimation? Of where the ruins and culture are?

Are they meant to stack on each other? With some sort of doubly tall plateau in Rauru's time that got cut down to the current height when things were sent up to the sky? The in-game location of the Great Sky Island hovers over the land east and a bit north of the Great Plateau, in a position that as a plateau on the ground would have blocked the river that feeds into Lake Hylia... or perhaps had that river running through underground caves instead of being out in the open, I suppose. With things being made to fly one could argue that the position could have changed... But still, it seems deliberate that the devs designed it so that a dive off of the platform behind the Rauru era Temple of Time drops you directly into the "Bottomless Pond" surface location. Things get muddled in something like the double height plateau idea you seem to be suggesting if you go back to what we could see with the Great Plateau when we first got to explore it in BotW. The entire plateau as a whole comes across like a retcon / elaboration upon what would have been contained within OoT's Castle Town walls. The northeast facing gate (blocked/flooded in BotW's time) would be the true form of what OoT showed us as the south-facing gate into town. (Establishing OoT's map as being wrong in at least some details.) You have the ruins of the town. You have the ruins of the temple. You have "Eastern Abbey" as the ruins of OoT's castle. We even have a location located roughly straight out from the direction that the gate is facing that we're meant to interpret as being the ruins of OoT's Lon Lon Ranch, and a path from the Deku Tree over the open field to the gate would pass by the ranch similar to how we pass by it in the world depicted in OoT. Apparently we're meant to interpret things with Rauru and Sonia as that there have been other versions of a kingdom of Hyrule before in times long forgotten by their time and they merely founded the current version of the kingdom. So the Great Plateau as OoT's Castle Town would have pre-dated them. It can't have been built after their time. The Great Plateau would have been about the same in their time as it is in BotW/TotK. Going by the exact positioning of the Great Sky Island we see in TotK though (assuming no movement besides lifting it up) it looks to me like the structure in the corner of the screen at the shot the video shows at 3:03 (that's what the video keeps trying to say is Rauru's castle, right? I would've thought that that was just part of what we know in the TotK present as the closest shrine location to the temple) would be positioned at what is now "Whistling Hill". Hmm... on the right of the screen in that same shot, we see a bridge over a river down below the plateau that will become the Great Sky Island. Continuing with assuming the land to just be lifted, not moved: That would have to be "Horwell Bridge". Wouldn't it? And that little island seen in the river there would be "Floret Sandbar". Right?

To begin with im not saying it was a double high plateu, far from it, I am using the similar landmarks we see in the trailers and cutscenes from the game itself. Given that natural and verdant areas tent to fill in the missing rock over a long span of time. Now I don’t believe it was a straight up pull, partly because as a defense system as we saw that Ganondorf knew the plateau was a critical location.it clearly has the same floatstone that other floating zonai material in it and as such it can be moved. (I suspect much as this video postulates that it had the Zonai Hyrule castle, and given how the seal is strengthened by having the castle “above the sealing chamber” continues to back the concept that this plateu had started to drift to the north. and thus it drifted slightly North by North West with a rotational drift of 135..ish (within a margin of error) clockwise thus placing the Zonai temple of time to the south regions of the plateu My key point matching is the Time altar Link sends the decayed Master Sword back on,as that point shares many identifying materials and geology with it thus meaning there is drift when the islands were raised. Morever, we know the general area wehre the Hylian Temple of time was built on the myth area of the Zonai variant (whether or not it was the Hylian sage of light remains up for debate and outside the scope of this discussion). I see you mention the double high concept, which I don’t agree with, least not in the conventional sense as knowing how geological cravases and all the additional hylian made structures across the supposed ‘seat’ of the kingdom thus makes the idea that remains of missing chunks of land mostly irrelevant and we need to pay attention to large geological structures, like the stone wall seen in Zeldas ritual, the great vista we see zelda stare out at with Rauru, as well as the beam of death we see King Rauru fire at. Which is also a great foundational point that the altar is ACTUALLY on the south side of the Plateau which in turn, places the temple either behind or just on the tip of the modern one. using that as a point of reference In a situation of a direct vertical rise you stand correct with your assunmptions, however even in the cutscenes we know the great temple of time was set upon the plateau. Thus we can confirm that there is some drift of the sky island for some various reason which opens up the bigger quesution as to why it drifted so far north and spun @@MuljoStpho

I assumed Ganondorf razed it to the ground during the sealing war. It's where he awakened as the Demon King and Rauru fled with Zelda and Sonia's corpse right after leaving the castle soldiers to contend with the Demon King and his monsters on their own R.I.P. Afterwards Ganondorf destroyed the place as a giant middle finger to Rauru instead of taking it over. Why else would the final battle have taken place in some random cave in Hyrule Field instead of Rauru trying to reclaim his castle?

I disagree. There is a LOT of lore across these two latest games and it's not massively different to how it's been handled before. The lore rarely lines up perfectly as it's not intended to. Maybe a hot take from me but zelda games do need lore yes, but it doesn't need to make sense.

Why do we keep having to just accept new unexplained lore as something thats just happened like the gaurdian tech disappearing for no reason. We come to Zelda for the lore and puzzles. Imo they spent way too much time on gameplay. Hell even just keeping the dragons tears in a lockable state until you find them in order wouldve done so much. But yeah sooo many questions with this game and so little actually expanded upon. Which can be good for theories but other games have just as in depth theories and even more lore explanation.
