I think I’m one of the 5% that didn’t sleep on Appmon, but if it was dubbed in English at least a couple years after it aired in Japan it probably would have been more well known. But I thoroughly enjoyed it just like all Digimon!!

Applimon was awesome! its a shame anyone chose to skip it. Any adult watching it would feel like a kid again watching digimon for the first time and have a blast. There are so many well written quotable characters and moments.

What i like about Appmon is that in general the Appmons aren't just acting as static characters who were either just a shadow of the human partner, or just basically mindless cute animals, or acts like some toddler. They have their own personalities and posses actual adult level maturity in each and every of them. A breath of fresh air for the franchise at the time.

I've started watching it and I'm currently at episode 16. When I watched the first episode my initial impression was that it had nothing to do with Digimon other than the anime's name so I didn't feel like continuing to watch the show but then I decided to keep watching as a solo new anime without any relevance to Digimon and it's worked for me. I like the main plot and the concept it has , the characters are alright, Rei is my favourite one and his backstory is intriguing, can't wait to watch the mystery surrounding Yujin to unfold.

i just finished the anime, and it was honestly so good. but it was so good that now i'm getting that slight empty feeling because i can't watch more appmon unless i just start rewatching it (which i will inevitably do sooner or later). it's especially bad because there's literally nobody to talk about it with, and the part of fandom that i have seen hasn't even been active for almost a year now. i know it's not the most likely, but i really really hope somehow, some way that a lot of people find out about it so i don't have to feel so alone in how much i love this show.

@@Iruazz15 i watched it on crunchyroll, personally- though the one problem with that is that you do need a premium subscription for it. if you dont have a subscription and dont want to pay for one, i do know that there are some pirating sites with the show, but i dont know the ins and outs of whats safe and what isnt, so do be careful if you go down that route. sorry if this wasnt much help. best of luck to you, i hope youre able to find a place that works for you!

I never saw Appmon as a spin-off. Is that how it’s officially known? I had no idea. Anyway, I love Appmon. It’s a great season, and I like that it does some things differently than previous seasons. For example, Toei intentionally made Haru a bookworm with no athletic ability to contrast with past Goggleheads who are all bold, outgoing soccer players. It made you appreciate his growth into a hero. I agree that more Digimon fans should watch this season.

This series isn't all that bad, it's actually really good. I'm watching it little by little online. This is they type of anime/cartoon that would have done very well in the 90s airing on weekly cartoon blocks from back in the day. I feel like Appmon is the start of a modernized digimon setup. Back in the 90s, even though digimon was centered around digital beings, the internet and tech wasn't anywhere near where it is now. I think Appmon is a perfect blend of modern tech and what digimon really are at the end of the day, sentient digital beings. Digimon 2020 and Ghost Game seems like they are modernizing the franchise which I love.

As someone who didn't skip a week of watching the show as it was airing I find it incredibly unfair that this show is, as you said, seen as a spin off and thus not worth considering. Appmon was a breath of fresh air in a time when the digimon formula had started to simply not work, and nostalgia was not enough to cover plot holes. Indeed, the themes of AI and the kids' personal dilemmas were far more compelling (and relevant to our times) than most digimon content. I also think you hit the spot when arguing for the use of 3D animation in the show. It unique and felt new...! And in this show Leomon does not die! It's all the Appmon, and that decision was incredibly brave and a great experience to present to the audience imho.

I don't think it's so much that the Digimon "formula" didn't work anymore... In fact, after Tamers, they seem to have almost purposefully abandoned the formula, only revisiting it in the criminally underrated Savers. But, even if your definition of the formula is different from mine, what really hurt Digimon was the story writing. I don't like Frontier and I hate Xros Wars, but both of those had a decent premise (actually, thinking about it as I'm writing this, they had virtually the same premise!), they were just executed terribly thanks to the weak characters and poor plot development.

@@SerenadeURA Never liked Savers, if anything I find it overated. Maseru was unlikable, the punching Digimon gimmick looked stupid. Kurata was a lame/annoying antagonist. And the Royal Knights felt like pointless fanservice. Overall too many generic shonen elements.

@@minicle426 Hey, at least you watched it. My experience has been that it gets a ton of hate, probably thanks to having a less than great English dub. I was a big fan of the general concept and enjoyed Masaru and the other characters. The ending felt rushed, and you're right that the Royal Knights seemed to be tacked on for little reason. I watched the seasons in order last year, so Savers could well be mundane, but in comparison to Frontier, is made to look much better.

So glad you covered this! Admittedly I never touched on Appmon, not because it wasn't Digimon or anything I just never got around to it and it kinda fell to the bottom of my priority list. Some of the designs of the Appmon really intrigue me, as does the plot. Good point on the Ghost Game comparisons though, in a way Ghost Game feels like 'another go' at Appmon. What made me "put it off indefinitely" was: - A lot of the appmon designs share a similar skeleton, I get why that is but it just lowers the originality for me. - The CGI...damn, I find it really hard to stomach. It's totally just me but I dropped other shows like Dragon Quest (which is also good) for the same reason. - (small petty reason) just the concept of using the apps, and the appdrive is just super grotesque bulbous looking piece of abstraction lol. Therefore, I would be keenly awaiting your retrospective on the series and your overall thoughts, to see if you can push me over the line to watch it 😉 Great video as always!

Watched all the way through the characters didn't get me at all it wasn't until offmon appeared and the Leviathan storyline started to roll that it got good. I really disliked the main 3 with only the dark tamer being the one that took the threat seriously and even his plot was amazing but the 7 mguffins hurt the first 25 eps bad and then the monster overload from them collecting apps once they sidelined the extras it felt like we got progress.

Cyber Sleuth and Appmon were what brought me right back into Digimon. I honestly believe that below the world of Appmon there is just another regular Digital World in the Multiverse, and that in theory if Eden from Cyber Sleuth hadn't made contact with Digimon then eventually hackers and AI really would have just invented Appmon!

Appmon will always have a special place in my heart for being the first Digimon series I watched completely (I also watched Tamers before but I only made it to episode 26 at that time, although I'm currently re-watching it from the beginning) back when I just started Middle School. I still stand by that Appmon is better than other 2010s Digimon animes. I feel Toei was on veeery weird direction on how they wanted to take Digimon during that decade, with Xros Wars being basically abandoning every Digimon rule ever and felt far more kiddy, Tri and Kizuna being too tryhard mature and edgy, and the Reboot being just a glorified toy promotional with very little sense of story. Then Appmon, a series that looks like a "kiddy spinoff" at first glance for some reason managed to have more soul than all of them. I have some nitpick with it like the CGI, story pacing, ad the theme song, but it's a good show overall, and more "Digimon" than the seasons i listed above. Ghost Game so far is pretty good. It feels like an evolution of formula of Appmon and Cyber Sleuth in how Digimon affecting human life, but actually takes place more in real environment and not locked in boring cyberspace.

I think one of the major elements that did a major disservice to Appmon was that aired following Hunters. I had no issue with the first two seasons of Xros Wars, especially the way it addressed the time disparity between seasons one and two. Heck, season two had some great moments. Sadly, I think Hunters turned many fans away even more so than Frontier. Whew. That said, greatly looking forward to a series retrospective. Well done on getting this out to us while Ghost Game is airing.

I watched Appmon back when I was struggling to watch Digimon Adventure 2020 and watching them side by side Appmon blew me away. It does everything dam near perfect when it comes to what I want in a modern Digimon. My favorite season of Digimon! Especially the characters! The fact that Haru isn’t the typical strong leader is so refreshing, and the rest of the cast are also great. Before we could watch Digimon Adventure:, my wife wanted to actually watch the first Digimon Adventure (she had never watched *any* Digimon) to appreciate how far the animation and story writing might have come, and with 2020 being what it was, that turned into literally a year long binge of Digimon, from the original movie all the way up to Last Evolution. Frontier and Xros Wars were truly the lowest points, and after all three seasons of Xros Wars, I was just about to not give Appmon a chance, too, but boy am I glad we did. Appmon really struck me as the perfect "kids show" - it's lighthearted and hopeful for most of its run, but has well written characters and great life lessons strewn about, and then with almost zero warning also has some of the heaviest plot points and frightening implications that I've seen in a Digimon season since Tamers. It's the kind of show I imagine parents watching with their children and being just as invested, maybe more so. I can't recommend it enough to people who might not be convinced by this quick review. To think that something as absolutely underwhelming as Tri overshadowed this is criminal.

I watched Digimon Universe right after it ended and man, what a great show! I think it perfectly captures what Digimon is supposed to be, especially in the way that it portrays our relationship with technology. Also, in my opinion, it is one of the seasons with the best human characters, and its second half is one of the best stories of Digimon anime, so yeah, every Digimon fan should give it a chance!!!

A lot of stuff I've seen have caught my eye, but other stuff like the 3D animation and the annoying repetitive names during evolution are taking me a bit to get used to. Although digimon appli monster had episodic stories like adventure 2020 appli monster delivered because it was a new cast and it was a new concept in reality technology is in our daily life so it’s good that they decided to take advantage of that also good openings and endings all the main characters were relatable to our way of being and not kidding this season had to compete to adventure tri for sporadic time also the battles and the finale were amazing

I myself skipped over applimon for years but started watching the first 10 episodes before going to other anime so i could come back to applimon later. the only thing I know is there is a lot and I mean a lot of fanservice in this spin off anime. The main problem I lost interest in Appmon was the digivolution system and Xros wasn't exactly great... I gave it a go but ideally I wanted something mature and that is why I preferred Tri at the time. Overall I kind of want Cyber Sleuth as an anime and I am enjoying Ghost Game because the digivolution is less gimmicky and feels kind of classic similar to the Adventure to Savers... the reason I called it Gimmicky is because it felt like Yugioh with a new mechanic per season but that mechanic isn't exactly something that brings excitement like the Fusion and App combination was just meh for me

Yeah, in Xros Wars it was basically have a base and join everyone together, but Appmon made it quite hard, there is a main Digimon, Gatchmon for example, he can fuse with Navimon for DoGatchimon, but it is really a fusion? Or it is Gatchmon? Then you get the DoGatchimon chip which can be used by itself, so it is a brand new one or what?

Applimon is on my top 3. I thought it was a little slow in the beginning but once it took off there was no stopping it. I really loved all the characters. I thought it was just as dark as tamers towards the end. And there's absolutely nothing you can say to convince me that the main protagonist isn't gay. Like I'm 100% he is. I will die on this hill. Technically every Digimon season except 02 is in a different universe. The title Digimon Universe is more a statement of it being in that multiverse.

@@snintendog I would argue that fundamentally the structure is quite familiar. The Appmon have three evolutions above their base ones that they hang out in, which are obtained through character/plot advancement. Also despite the efforts to be funny, it very much has a similar heart to Tamers/Ghost Game.

Post Tri, Appli Monsters is by far the best Digimon series. And honestly, I think it would probably be second or third to only Digimon Tri and Fusion in my opinion. How ironic that my favorite three shows are the ones often looked down upon by most of the community... Also, after watching Appli, I find it incredibly strange just how similar Ghost Game is to both it and the third season of Digimon Xros Wars.

Ive gotta see this... also lol. Big feels on the youtuber bit. I am constantly comparing myself to other youtubers, and only do it in my spare time. I think it would be super cool if my channel ever gained traction. I had two videos reach over 800 views today and 1 even got 40 likes which totally blew my mind. Tho I'm really just doing it for fun. Sorry got super ranty there lol. Anyway I can relate and also love the concept of this. I will basically watch anything you post lol.

I watched it and enjoyed it, downloaded every episode, and if I came back from school I can rewatch it. The openings/endings are also good so I highly recommend it. The evolutions are so good

I have always loved Digimon. I just can't find information on things like this. If there is time I would like to see a full list review on all Digimon seasons/shows... maybe then I can do a search and find it.

Currently watching Appmon cause I didn’t know about Crunchyroll when this first came out. Now 22 episodes in and I wish we got more seasons like this in the franchise. Hopefully we get something like this in the future

I'm glad your talking about this because I really enjoyed this when I watched it airing and I have alot of appmon chips and I have the drivers aswell there fun the sounds the lights I really enjoyed this series wouldn't tay top three but still a good series same with xros wars I get why people don't like it but I remember watching the English dub on TV and wanting the digivice even though I still have the English ones there not as good as the japanese xros drivers I have

The AI stuff is extremely relatable to the real world right now, where AI is dangerous sometimes, losing jobs to other cautious things, App Monsters predicted this.

I still considered Appmon as a part of Digimon Universe because to me that they "lives" in the network instead of Digital World, they're still "digital" monsters. They can be considered "Cousins" in my eyes. I'm looking forward to see how many "Gods" and how many "apps" comes to life!
