Having lived in Ashton for over 60 years, and near ‘Romford Road’, it’s obvious that the builders of said road Willans, have mistakenly named it, there is an old map, that I have seen, that shows and names Stromford Brook, but where the ‘St’ is on the map there is a crease that obliterates it, I reckon the developers saw this map! It’s obvious that the road should have been named Stromford Road, after the brook that flows at the back of the properties bordering the farm fields.

There was an old tale of a ghost that haunted the area by the side of the church and the farm and it was said to be spirit of the mill owners daughter who committed suicide in a silo and was known as 'the white lady'??? I always thought it didnt ring true as hadnt heard of a mill in the village - but now makes a little more sense

Intriguing.

Fascinating! I moved to Sale about three years ago, and I'm interested in its history, from the start (whenever that may have been) until present day. One of the people in this video said there was a lack of "timber-framed mills" in the northwest, if I understood him correctly. I know the mill at Dunham Massey is too new (new as in 17th century, I think, lol) and is more substantial, but what about the corn mill at Nether Alderley? I thought it was medieval, though it's been a fair few years since I've been there. Could it be used for comparison to this one? (Re fire: I read that millers had to be careful not to let mill-wheels "run dry," as in turning with no grain in them, as that could cause them to spark. Fine dust in the air, a simple spark, and - yes, that apparently was the cause of many a lost mill!)
@Wickedacorn3 ай бұрын
A visit to Nether Alderly mill was planned for this video but it closed early this season due to lack of volunteers. Hopefully next year. It may be medieval in origin but has been upgraded several times since. There’s evidece James Brindley of Bridgewater canal fame was involved in its upgrade mid 1700s. We’ll have to wait and see.
