For a dude with two videos this quality and content is solid. Nice to see some meta talk about the books instead of the tin foil conspiracies most channels do. Which I still love but this is great.

I appreciate the kind comments. As it goes on there is tinfoil but its more tinfoil speculation about stuff that doesn't happen or what might have happened in earlier drafts of ADWD. It takes awhile to get there though since I would rather make sure people know the facts for what they are and then scratch their head and consider possibilities, but not latch onto these things as proven paradigms.

Margery Tyrell and the Blackfish should have gotten POVs. Blackfish during the war with Rob Stark and during the seige of Riverrun. Plus imagine him getting POV when he finds out about the Red Wedding. Margery during a Feast for Crows. Plenty of Jamie and Cersei in King's Landing chapters. On blood Oranges, I didn't realise they were a symbolism for house Martell, so I google to know more about them: -The blood orange is a natural mutation of the orange, which is itself a hybrid (Interesting, Martell are Rhoynar and Valyrian in part, also a little bit of Andal if I'm not mistaken) -They have a distinctive dark flesh color - He flesh develops its characteristic maroon color when the fruit develops with low temperatures during the night... mmm this gives me long night vibes, but I think it doesn't meant anything. - The skin can be tougher and harder to peel than that of other oranges. Martell are un-conquered - Blood oranges have a unique flavor compared to other oranges. Martell have definitely a diffrent style, so yes I like it.
@AdmiralKird
@AdmiralKird 6 жыл бұрын
As pointed out to me by /u/glass_table_girl, the blood oranges also get brought up in Sansa chapters as well, but there they are used for more other purposes. They talk about it on their latest episode of GirlsGoneCanon: girlsgonecanon.podbean.com/e/girls-gone-canon-asos-sansa-stark-vivii/ So they're definitely in the story before but the question to me makes me wonder if yeah, GRRM decided here would be another great place to use them. And perhaps the stuff you brought up Vanessa will also influence his writing of Dorne with the motifs the oranges themselves show us.

I saw George at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

What an insanely brilliant video! Thank you very much. Even though it is speculation, you bring out some good arguments and interesting viewpoints. Willas sitting in the garden with roses is definately a chapter I would want to read. I just finished "A Storm of Swords" and this video made me thin about how many things are left ambiguous in a way that would have made a five year skip really interesting. A Feast for Crows continues hours or minutes after where Storm of Swords ends, but that doesn't mean it was originally planned that way.

Would be interesting to see a video on why the five gap failed. Although it might only be known to George.
@AdmiralKird
@AdmiralKird 6 жыл бұрын
In the number of interviews I looked at, the predominant theme was it was really difficult for him to write the actual chapters as chapters in an engaging novel, containing the information of the past five years. It wasn't so much he was very lost as to where to take the story, but he kept having to explain what had happened during the 5YG within the chapters while new, current events were taking place. Characters were often standing around or sitting talking in depth of what happened in the last five years and this was cannibalizing the quality of these chapters and story. Ultimately he concluded he would be better of telling the story of the 5YG during AFFC as its own thing, and allowing the post-5YG chapters to breathe. Of course though, then AFFC grew too big and stuff started to get moved around and it became a whole new thing.
@MidnightSun009
@MidnightSun009 6 жыл бұрын
@@AdmiralKird probably would have been easier to start off after the gap. Must be so difficult to juggle things now as they are not happening at the exact time they should have been. Maybe a world book to bridge the gap would have been in order, but to have a world book as part of an ongoing fantasy series...that is crazy.
@AdmiralKird
@AdmiralKird 6 жыл бұрын
@@MidnightSun009 The idea of a worldbook rather than a regular book is interesting and I've personally never heard that before. It's possible GRRM might have considered that but I think he'd also want to not publish it until right before the next regular book was finished and ready, so he could go back and change things to better fit the actual dramatic story which... There's just so much stuff he could do with that if he did, it might take him maybe even longer to complete.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed this video, I am absolutely befuddled as to how you forgot to mention Leo Tyrell who is in OldTown and literally has dialogue in the Prologue of AFFC...
@AdmiralKird
@AdmiralKird 6 жыл бұрын
I did remember Leo, but omitted including him. The Tyrells compared to a lot of the others have a very big House if you look at their extended family tree, which Leo is a part of. So I figured I needed to cut it off somewhere or I'd be listing all the Tyrells out the wazoo, and Leo is also a maester in training so he's not supposed to be serving a specific House. You could say the same thing about Jon being included with the Starks but his story is fairly complicated, doesn't begin being a member of the Nights Watch and also finishes in ADWD with him getting involved with the realms of men. I could have talked about how Leo could have fit down in Oldtown, but because GRRM didn't mention him as being a candidate to write the Prologue from in AFFC like he did with Mollander and Rosey, I figured he wouldn't be under consideration for GRRM since Leo would have been the Tyrell POV to pick for that story line. There was a lot to cover in 46 minutes and with the video growing twice as long as I had hoped I needed to try and "cut the fat" as GRRM calls it. Some things get really complicated to talk about the ins and outs of things and if I sat on most of the above text blocks in this response, it would have dragged the video down for several minutes.

The tyrells were the best, without them the story is dull and boring. from a lineage of upstarts they worked hard, grew strong and were then killed instantly, unceremoniously. I loved the family and the history, but it was Nonsensically erased , a waste of time, and since then I realised Grrm is a hack with no plan or design , writing by the seat of his pants, hooking idiots with shock value wearing thin by now, without the cunning Tyrells we are left with same old tired shit, Starks, Lannisters.... All the rest should have been cut out, non of it mean anything. Even little finger, none of it matters when youre main character has supernatural powers like Bran does 😑 it's totally rigged... Not "wheell breaking" or democratic at all! It's all a farce . With no.changes. but that's George's ending. He isn't very good. Over hyped. AND KNOW THAT HBO MADE HIM FAMOUS, NOT VICE VERSA

I did find your speculation that GOT season 5 and six to be possibly based off five year gap material interesting. Tommen is a young teenager(the actor is seventeen but he acts more 14-15) and Marge is in her twenties. The battle over his affection, and the marriage being consummated(something that isn't possible in the books given how young Tommen is) and Marge and Cersei's back and forth. Perhaps the role of the HS in the show was also taken from this material, if it existed.

Yeah I really didn't realize it was like that til I was thinking about what Margy would have been like, then I recorded the first part, then realized this is a lot like the show... huh. Might be a connection, might not. Not sure about the High Sparrow, that dynamic I've seen described as being fundamentally different to the books. In the show its more about a pure, righteous, holy guy taking the lead of a radical uprising, whereas the books its more of a radical guy with no nonsense taking control of a fundamental populist movement. Some of this might happen to do with Jonathan Pryce's interpretation of the character as well. There's probably also more stuff to come with the Faith in the next book, as a lot of it seems to be born out of the earlier, violent pre-Luther portions of the reformation. Tommen's suicide might also be a twist on a future event of the reformation in... I think it's the Second Defenestration of Prague: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defenestrations_of_Prague (defenestration means "out the window" where they stormed the palace and literally threw everyone out) This could be Tommen's future book fate but they abbreviated it, what with tommen also being younger in the books it couldn't realistically be a suicide.

@@AdmiralKird Hmm I always felt Tommen's death paralleled Bran's fall in a lot of ways. That is one aspect where I prefer the show, in the books Tommen doesn't do anything except eat and say he wants to ban beets, in the show he's a good intentioned but naïve teenager being led in multiple directions while having major problems of self confidence. I was rooting for Tommen in the show, while you can't become as invested in the character in the books. Chapman does a great job of portraying him as barely holding himself together a boy king who never had a chance but is such a sweetie.

I see the argument repeated many places about how some characters know too much to be POV's. How exactly - because Ned was a POV throughout the first book and he knows a whole lot. The notion that the George RR Martin couldn't write a POV for a character without revealing too much never made sense to me but it seems to be commonly accepted among GoT reviewers.
@AdmiralKird
@AdmiralKird 6 жыл бұрын
You make a good case. He does tend to write around this a lot but it can be tricky. GRRM in particular uses the trauma in Ned to almost hide his own feelings from himself, like he doesn't want to think about anything other than his sister. It's effective. Tyrion and the chain is another example where Tyrion is having all the blacksmiths forge these giant links, but the decisions he makes about where and how to use it are preserved for when the plan goes into motion. I guess you could write around the offer to bring the Tyrells into the fold in book two, I'm not sure that would entirely work that well though because he'd be writing around two back to back mysteries simultaneously by having both characters hiding their true intentions. It might work though, but it also might be a bit risky from a writing perspective to double down on that. Olenna in book three... I think after she has the information from Sansa planted in her head with Butterbumps dancing on the table (I love how GRRM writes this chapter in the books inter-cutting with the song), she'd almost have to be thinking "I needs deal with Joffrey. Margaery must be Queen but he will not do for a husband." I'm not sure GRRM could write her any other way, as that is such a key aspect to her character. She's very quick in words, wit, judgement, and decisive. So hiding a mystery from her perspective would be much more difficult than the traumatized Ned. I'm not sure Olenna would ever be a good POV for GRRM's usual writing because he likes characters who can sit and ponder and think on something and muse it. Olenna really isn't like that so while she might be a POV very different and unique to read, I'm not sure that's something GRRM would personally want to do? But thinking about it I kinda wish that her chapters existed, but because of them being faithful to her character she would be more at risk of giving things away before their time.

I think the Tyrells in general know to much, having a POV of them would be spoiling everything: 1- In the first book one Loras and Renly were scheming to crown Margaery by marrying her to Robert. Wish meant at least Margaery and Loras were plotting from before the beginning of the books. Perhaps they were thinking of Joffrey/Margaery from the beginning but he got betrothed with Sansa, so they swish to Robert. 2- Then Loras and Renly where Central in COK, they couldn't have Loras as POV because the relationship with Renly would be more obvious. And the swish of sides at the ends would be Reveal. 3- Olenna couldn't never being a POV, her involvement on Joffrey's death would be reveal; we also meet Garlan, he would make sense as a POV and yet I think he not being a POV is very telling, because I think Garlan was more involved in Joffrey's death than we often think, I think he knew about it, and actively participate and manipulated Tyrion at the same time (or if not manipulating him at least was involved in the Killing) 4- Mace is too central to the negotiations with Baelish to swish sides to be a POV. 5- Willas is a wild card that could be as manipulative as Doran and Olenna. 6- Alerie Hightower has a chance to reveal a bigger Hightower/Tyrell plot to get control of the crown that goes back to Oldtown. (I think every Hightower is suspicious) The tyrell could basically be the new crown scheming Hightower thru Alerie In the end, I think and non-direct member of the House Tyrell like a servant, A young Maestre, a handmaiden, a lady in waiting, the Blue bard or even the a fool would make sense, George miss out on using a perverted or sarcastic fool that is planning to write a tell all book to shadow the Tyrells.

lol loras and renly aren't even hinted at in the book, its clearly something made up for in the series, renly FYI makes his intention to marry margaery in the first book very clear to Ned stark. even if we assume the whole renly & loras thing is in the books (and we simply never got any evidence for it) its clear the tyrels and renly were plotting something for a long time (or possibly that renly isn't gay in the books and he simply liked the look of margery)

@madamehoefyre1808 6 жыл бұрын
@@matthiuskoenig3378 I'd argue that Renly's love affair with Loras was definitely apart of his character in the books, there'd just be no just reason for it to actually be seen unless Loras, Renly, or Margery had a pov. It wouldn't make sense for someone like Ned to have such knowledge or to witness such. Him being gay doesn't seem like a creative choice by the show and if it was, I'm sure George R.R. Martin would definitely have had a say in that matter or even put it forward.

Hey.. just discovered your channel. I just want to share my personal opinion that the prologue of A Clash of Kings is the best part of the series. It's a great introduction to Stannis, who was mentioned as important but not seen directly in the previous book, but also through the perspective of Stannis's father figure. The prolauge to A Game of Thrones is also macabre, but the imagery of the this prolauge is more macabre on an emotional level. You get to see the beginning of Stannis's moral fall through the perspective of his father figure. Sharine is physically scarred, whose only companion is a mentally handicapped jester. I think one line is "a tale to make men weep" I think it does a perfect job of setting the tone of not only the second installment but the series as a whole

Interesting video, and well done. I would just add that the books aren't finished yet, and it would not surprise me if a Tyrell POV showed up in TWOW or even ADOS. My bet would be either Willas or Garlan. There has been a lot of hints about Willas's character, which seems to me like a foreshadowing of actually meeting him in person. I suppose that could happen through Sam's POV, but I still think we will get a Tyrell POV at some point.

Except Frank Herbert made the time gap 4000 years and was moving on from pretty much every character in the first three books, it was a soft reset. GRRM's idea was far more complex to execute and it didn't work .

The key to the quote @ 44:13 is the word "exactly". George says, "If I know exactly where a book is going, I lose all interest in writing it." He has a general idea where it is going, and he will meander his way to the end (provided he lives long enough to get there). George clearly loves starting projects (look at all the new projects he has going on now). Finally, in a quote early on in this video, George says that he likes "having written" - however, he does not love the process of writing itself. I imagine this becomes even more the case as the story grows in complexity as he adds each new volume to the series.
