As an ex petty criminal and addict of multiple drugs for decades these stories have been very important to me for a couple of reasons firstly as a wholesome evening entertainment but also if I have trouble winding down or waking too early they can relax me so much as to make me get back off to sleep much easier . I have made Audiobooks of various kinds a bit of a hobby of late and have sampled many great readers including the likes of Stephen FRy reading some of these tales , though I am a big fan of Stephens I have come to love Gregs interpretations so much that it just wasn`t the same it not being him , when itt comes to reading fiction and of Sherlock Holmes he is without doubt my personal favourite , his reading of Black Peter the Reigate Squire and the tales especially of "chickens coming home to roost from abroad type" as I call them are my favourites .

Hi Philip. Thank you for listening. I have found reading them to have been rather comforting over these recent tumultuous years. I'm always very happy to hear they've helped others too, so thank you for your comments. Glad to win out over Mr Fry now and again ;-)

Hey Philip hope all is well just want to agree with your opinipn about Greg+his most distinctive voice(pure syrup)your honest open comment was most surprising+would like to say i share the same problems you mentioned although the petty crime was in my youth many moons ago but do struggle with the other you stated+say this not as a point of pride(far from it)i say so maybe you don't feel so different or isolated in your struggles(not that you should)i also find much comfort in Gregs stories as well as his soothing tone, good luck to you+take care Phillip(was surprised to find somebody of such similar circumstances as mine - some really bad choices on my part but good at heart tbh)be lucky Philip 🍀🤞

Superb narration, as ever, and I concur with your assessment of the story's quality, one of Doyle's very best I think - and of course the identification of Holmes. I've also heard it suggested that de Lernac's "English agent" could be Moriarty, but I don't think that's likely... although the description of him as a respectable military looking man might identify him as Colonel Sebastian Moran? I may have thought about this far too much...

Another good yarn. As a son of the fair City of Liverpool and whose father worked for the railway company most of his adult life, this was an enjoyable narrative BUT just how realistic the "disappearance" of the train was I must leave to rail-track engineers !

Wouldn't the existing track require modification in order for the plan to work? I'm no rail engineer either, but just mulling over potential details. There must be simpler methods of achieving the desired end, but the recounting was quite diabolical.

Was the letter writer Sherlock Holmes? I think it more likely that it was Mycroft Holmes. Sherlock would have left Baker Street and investigated all 7 sidelines and doubtless discovered traces of the replaced rails, and footprints of the workmen who laid them and then removed them. Then he'd have brought in Lestrade and others and followed the track all the way to the mine, and thence to the train. Mycroft, on the other hand, would not stir from his armchair, give a few seconds thought to the matter, but not bother to do any actual legwork and stir from the Diogenes Club. A letter would be enough for him!

The (Heavy) implication is that Holmes exists in this storyline. A question that occurs to me is 'Why does Holmes not solve it?' Why Holmes does not involve himself by himself can be evident to those who have read the stories. Holmes has egocentric requirement that people ask him to help so he can show them how it's done. But, why does not an agent of the Railway or the police force ever consult him?

A truly fantastic performance as always, but here's my logical quibble: Wouldn't the railway company and/or Scotland Yard have engaged Sherlock Holmes to investigate this case, instead of ignoring his perfectly reasonable (and correct) letter to the Times? Of course, if they had done so the story would have been over after about twenty minutes, but you'd think Inspector Lestrade would have at least paid him a visit!!

Peter Haining collected this story and many others, and published them in a book entitled “The final adventures of Sherlock Holmes” back in 1993 which included a foreword by Jeremy Brett, and this story was one of them. Another story was a play called “ The Crown Diamond” which Arthur Conan Doyle subsequently re-wrote as a short-story, “The Mazarin Stone”. Just a little bit of trivia-information for you. It was, however, great to hear this story as an audio-book. You did a fantastic job. Thank you.

Support Kanak independence! "New Caledonia" as French colonisers call it, was used as a dumping ground for prisoners and exploited for nickel mining, and the indigenous Kanak people were abducted for plantation servitude around the Pacific.

Greg, I would also like to donate as your narrations of these beloved stories got me thru a very critical time before my surgery 2 years ago ... I am now doing much better on all fronts:) thanks be to God. I have never used Patreon but use PayPal all the time or Venmo. If possible please set this up so that we may show our appreciation. Thank you again for all you do!!

I think it is you who may be boring , not equipped to deal with some of the best tales in the English Tongue , by one of the best crime authors and indeed internationally regarded one of the best storytellers in the history of mankind itself !

A fiendishly clever plot: a man who threatened to expose certain powerful and corrupt people is made to disappear without a trace.
