Did this man open his video by stating 3D Mario is more popular than 2D Mario- as if that was the standard public opinion- despite that being extremely contrarian to anyone who has spent more than 30 seconds around gaming? And then proceed to cite a source disputing his claim, but using it as somehow evidence of his claim still being true? What is going on here?

This mario was called MARIO TENNIS and it was released on the NINTENDO VIRTUAL BOY; one year prior to the n64 consoles release to the market.

I would actually agree with the interpretation that Super Mario RPG would have been considered a 3D game by the standards of the time. I mean, look at what Sega put out as "Sonic 3D Blast," it's pretty much the same style as Super Mario RPG. Even earlier, we see Yoshi's Safari which has kind of a pseudo-3D effect in Mode 7. It's likely the idea of a 3D Mario game was already being toyed with for years, and Super Mario 64 was the culmination of those experiments. I highly doubt that there is a lost 3D Mario game for the SNES, but it's pretty easy to see where Super Mario 64 came from just looking at two of the more technically impressive Mario games on the SNES.
@jeffthecoder2 жыл бұрын
I feel like if use of the Super FX chip was geared more toward things like sprite scaling and rotation and complex graphics compression, a good looking Mario 3D game would've absolutely been possible. For example, prerender Mario and the baddies Donkey Kong Country style, utilize Mode 7 similar to games like "Speed Racer", "Extreme Snowboarding" and "Off Road Baja" to have hilly 3D perspective terrain, and utilize the Super FX chip to handle complex graphics compression for high sprite frame counts and to scale/rotate sprites in real time to have a 3D Mario game similar to the original Crash Bandicoot games..
@Xegethra2 жыл бұрын
Consoles really did take their time getting good enough for this sort of stuff. Hell, even PC gaming took a bit of a while to get 3D going in the late 80's/early 90's when we had arcade games like iRobot from the 83 and CGI tech demos and animations from the 70's.

This came as a huge surprise to me. I can’t believe super Mario 64 wasn’t actually going to be the first 3-D Mario game in existence! It was going to be a game that we never got! And its name was super Mario FX? Holy crap! This is some of the most interesting stuff that I have ever heard! You never fail to amaze me with this information every time, Wily. I first came across this KZbin channel by complete accident. I was looking for some interesting Mario videos to watch, and the first video that I ever saw on this channel was the evolution of the Boo video. But after I watched that video, I started to wonder if there were more videos just like it. Fortunately for me, there was. And I have really enjoyed this channel ever since. Thank you for making this awesome content, Wily. One of my fondest memories of watching your videos is when my grandma and I would drop my sister off at school for some summer activities that she was having. And when my grandma and I were walking home from my sisters old school, I would watch your videos.

Many games were developed on previous generation hardware and this seems like the case here as well. Zelda Link to The Past had a beta on the NES. Super Mario World was also a beta on the NES. Even Donkey Kong Country had a beta on the NES. All were intended on being SNES games upon release. So it makes sense that a beta for Mario 64 was being developed on the SNES and finalized for the N64.

While Miyamoto did briefly consider a 3D Mario game for the SNES, Super Mario FX in itself was just a code-name for the chip used for games like Star Fox and Stunt Race FX. Video in short . IGN overlooked and speculated without proof. An assuming a 3d MArio games on snes was to happen. To frame rate would be around 4 fps . Which is half of what starfox had at the time. Given, mario would rely on more fx chips , and still run slow. Due, to the limitations of the Snes. A 3d open world mario would be impossible. Now , if it was a 2.5D Mario it could be possible. But, the fps would be dreadful and not worth the devs and the players time .

Please, stop spreading the fake believe that SNES was designed to be expanded as a singular feature: All cartridge based systems can be upgraded with chips built into cartridges. The first example I can think of is the Atari 2600 with the pitfall 2 game also including a builtin chip.The ideal is that you would not need them but when the system is so weak, there's no other solution. I mean, I had paid for 7 MMC3 chips in seven different games when the NES was still kicking. I should've paid less if NES had implemented those features.
