Mutant League was an animated series based on the video games Mutant League Football and Mutant League Hockey which aired from July 2, 1994 to February 24, 1996.
The show ran for 2 seasons and 40 episodes in total and had a line of action figures and vehicles but seems to have been almost wiped from existence in the US.

Ah, Bones Justice. When his eyes glowed red, body parts were sure to start flying. I still remember him getting pissed off, shoulder charging through a door and breaking it off it's hinges, smashing into a mutant (or two) before pinning and squashing the mutant between the door and a wall, making his brain shoot out and across the room. I recall seeing all of that and the various comedic gore and dismemberment and loved every moment of it.

Tiny correction, Mutant League Football was entirely built from the ground up, it doesn't have any coding of the Madden games in it. But this is information that was only discovered recently when the programmer gave an interview.

Admittedly, it would be hard to tell; the perspective, controls, receiver view, and play choice screens are almost identical in every way. I used to explain the game to friends who didn't know it as "It's Madden, but with mutants, land mines, and a audible to murder the ref."

Cartoons really didn't have a clear ending or grand finales back then, regardless of levels of success. They just ended. Partially because the execs thought their audience was so dumb they'd continue to watch endless reruns of a show for a "new" episode.

I remember Mutant League Cartoon when I was little boy in the mid 90s. Saturday Morning Cartoons on Sundays (good old times). Watch this cartoon in 1994 and 1995, close to finish watching the whole seasons, but I miss out of Mutant League, watching Iron Man and Fantastic Four cartoons, then watch Super Human Samurai Syber Squad, Phantom 2040, Video Power (the cartoon), few times Monster Force, and Battletech. Cartoon memories of my childhood, like nostalgia to me!

I got it on Sundays. And frankly, it was TOO good for the downright depressing junk cartoons they had in syndication on a Sunday. I mean, Double Dragon? There's nothing the polar opposite of a well plotted, world building video game series like Mutant League, then a generic martial arts based cartoon series that has barely anything to do with the video game that it was named after like Double Dragon.

What made it deep was that Joe Magician (the guy whose body was getting ruined due to age) was most definitely NOT Bones' role model - Joe was an egotistical jackass who kept on promising to do things like entertaining orphans and the like, and he'd stand them up and let Bones and co. pick up the slack for him. He was all ego and very little if any substance, though he had the talent. And still, Bones cared enough to try and convince him to break out of the denial. There was even a scene where Joe was dancing with a younger-looking lizoid woman. Maybe he was having a midlife crisis. Either way, he was an attention-hound and possibly a narcissist with talent and a lot of insecurity.

While I would normally let such things pass, I recently found this interview with Michael Mendheim which specifies that while Mutant League Football and Madden ‘93 play VERY similarly, they were actually in production at the same time, with the two teams at EA sharing ideas: www.brettweisswords.com/2020/01/michael-mendheim-interview-mutant.html?m=1 Also, I think it’s important to note that the newer Mutant Football League hired Tim Kitzrow, the NBA Jam announcer, to record commentary for the game. His voice makes the game way more fun. I’m not a sports guy, but Dan, thank you for covering one of my favorite weird mid-90s cartoons and video game series. I honestly never knew there were toys until this video!

My cousin and I used to play Mutant League Hockey all the time. We would always win by forfeit. We’d kill opposing players until they didn’t have enough left. I also remember watching an episode or two of the cartoon.

One thing that is kind of neat about the new Mutant Football League. Played it on Steam, saw a problem with season being really hard to complete if your team members die, really no way to ressurect them all or get new ones. Made a suggestion in the forums for them to make it where dead players come back after the game is over, and they added it.

OMG I used to love playing this. Now I have the spiritual remake Mutant football league. They kept true to the original, even spoofing the names of both actual NFL teams and players. They even have NBA jams Tim "Boomshakalaka" Kitzrow doing the voices for the announce team. I highly recommend this game if you want to play something other then Madden. It even has a GM mode.

I'm the exact opposite. I knew about the show. And watched religiously growing up in the 90s. But didn't know that there were Sega Genesis games until much much later.

I remember the first time I discovered Mutant League - it was on February 25th 2021 when a youtube channel by the name of Toy Galaxy devoted an episode to it. In vaguely related news, I do still have my old undead Blood Bowl team miniatures from way back in the day. ^_~

I played mutant League football first, and when mutant League hockey came out it was a huge deal and me and my cousin would play the crap out of it. I even remember watching the cartoon for a short time, but I was getting to the age to where I was getting out of watching cartoons like that in the morning
