The lost village of Pulau Seking

Curiosity Show visited Singapore's Pulau Seking back in 1983 when it was a thriving little fishing village. It has all gone today, swept away in 1994 when the island was reclaimed for industrial development, so this is a historic look at old Singapore - Rob. SUBSCRIBE NOW

It was joined up with Pulau Semakau to create a landfill for waste disposal - right in the middle of the ocean - where barges of incinerated ash are unloaded constantly, slowly but surely filling it up. They say it will be full by 2035 at the earliest. Definitely cool to see Pulau Sakeng as it was before the repurposing.

It’s surprisingly clean. They’ve taken measures to prevent toxic waste from leaching into the sea. Also, as they fill up dumping cells, they cover it in topsoil and plant trees and grass, gradually turning it into a nature reserve.
