For me this is one of those movies that you grew up liking it, and you thought you were with the majority, and once you started getting into the movies side of the internet you're surprised finding out that a lot of people don't like it and it has bad reviews. Yes, it's far from perfect and has a very high bar to reach following the first one. But that doesn't make it bad at all, the script may not be as good, but the film certainly benefits from still having Spielberg's vision, unlike the rest of the saga. And I'll never understand those who prefer the third one over this one, 3 has a much stupider story and visually looks like from the SyFy channel. This movie is the definition of underrated. Following your points, the score to this movie feels primal (like very jungle-like and mysterious), the set pieces look amazing (very dirtied up and with great attention to detail), the VFX I would argue rival the ones from the first movie and still hold up better than many of the modern Hollywood mega budget blockbusters that end up looking dated after just a couple of years, and the look of the dinosaurs is just so good. This movie is flawed, no doubt especially the T-Rex in San Diego, but it's an overall pretty alright movie

It's a way more bloated movie than the original and that's to its detriment. Like the San Diego sequence as a whole feels like a tacked on fourth act after the movie's plot had basically already ended. It's fun, but I get the mixed reception Jurassic Park 3 is a much more streamlined movie so it has that going for it and it's the only movie where I feel like the cgi genuinely lives up to the animatronics while also having a good balance of both to make the movie as a whole feel more real unlike the newer ones. But at the same time the characters all feel like they belong in a cartoon and the plot requires a lot of logical leaps in order to make sense because of it. And it's definitely the movie where they took the turn from the dinosaurs feeling like wild animals to feeling like horror movie monsters. Both have their issues and as a whole I'd put them on the same level.

The things i remember from this movie - trailer hanging off a cliff and everyone having to climb up to get out, gymnastics vs raptors and the bit at the end about the T-rex having a nice stroll through the streets that feels extra tact on for no clear reason... Still better than the Jurassic world movies imo. Those manage to be incredibly boring despite how I love me a villain that thinks raptors are better for war than guns or drones.

Pachycephalosaurus is my favorite dinosaur, and so I am elated that James and Mason are quite enamored with the "living battering ram."
@davejones94692 жыл бұрын
The pachycephelosaurus, the "ramming" dino, actually had a porous skull dome, meaning it was likely full of blood vessels meaning if two butted heads they'd both instantly die. It's now thought it was used to change colours for mating and other communication, hence the blood vessels.
@thegloriouskingkronk84222 жыл бұрын
No, no this is not at all the scientific consensus, where'd you get this from. Was it that contrarian Jack Horner? He said that, I know he said that, he's a contrarian and says a lot of dumb things like how Tyrannosaurus is a scavenger, which was so stupid he even backtracked on it. There's literally a Torosaurus skull with a healed bite mark of a T. rex. Bones don't heal on dead animals. Skull lesions in pachycephalosaur specimens aren't rare and are consistent in their nature to having been caused by penetrations of the overlying tissue by an external object, which is just one of several pieces of evidence for headbutting. Their skullroofs were also capable of healing very quickly and were very thick. If you want to read about it, here's an actually peer reviewed study on the matter, unlike the sensationalist articles Horner gets written for his stuff like that news article that said "Triceratops isn't real??? Awoooga wooga?" despite the fact that a) Torosaurus and Triceratops are far from similar enough for that suggestion to float, b) their ranges don't even overlap entirely, which they should if they were the same animal: Torosaurus appears to be spread further South, which would mean the Horner's synonymy suggestion also implies that we have only found very old specimens there and none in at any other age despite their incredible abundance elsewhere, and c), Triceratops has seniority over Torosaurus, meaning that Torosaurus would become a synonym, not Triceratops. And even if Torosaurus had seniority, there's no way the scientific community would not just make it a senior synonym for Triceratops, a taxon on which a good hundred papers were published. "Common Functional Correlates of Head-Strike Behavior in the Pachycephalosaur Stegoceras validum (Ornithischia, Dinosauria) and Combative Artiodactyls" www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3125168/

@@davejones9469 Happy to hear it. Horner's complete bs has become something of a particular pain point to me since I decided I wanted to do science communication (not professionally yet though haha) because he makes outlandish claims that are picked up by news outlets because they make for great headlines which people read and remember, even if it doesn't at all reflect on current studies. Horner has been right about a thing like this I believe. Might've been him that suggested that Dracorex, Stygimoloch, and Pachycephalosaurus represented different growth stages of the same animal, which wound up being true (though Stygimoloch may actually yet be a relative). It's just that most of what he says otherwise is largely contrarian nonsense. Also, fun fact, pachycephalosaurs are most closely related to ceratopsians. Hard to see the family resemblance, right? Well, the hindfeet of even giant ceratopsids like Triceratops or Torosaurus still look similar to those of their bipedal relatives, pachycephalosaurs included, and the head butting behavior is shared in both groups in some capacity, although I don't believe that it is ancestral since basal ceratopsians like Psittacosaurus bear no structures indicating such behavior.
@davejones94692 жыл бұрын
@@thegloriouskingkronk8422 Obviously you've put the work in and know your stuff. I also read the part about stymiglioch etc being different growth stages (in Jurassic World Evolution, a pretty fun game, they're all separate dinos you can make lol) and it does make some sense. There's nothing stopping you from becoming a "professional" science communicator, especially with KZbin. One of my favorite guys is Anton Petrov, and he couldn't cut it in school and in about 5 years he's I think getting near a million subs *(double checked, just hit 1 mil) plus patron and merch. You can see how basic he started, and his format is super simple. I'd recommend you check him out as a simple way to get started on something you actually love. Mine is astrophysics because I'm an aspiring sci fi writer, so I write similar rants in comments on those subjects too lol. This is my favorite of the franchise. I know it has it's flaws and isn't as good as the first, but it is just an awesome movie and I love it being more Malcolm-centric and seeing his character grow from happy go lucky jester to traumatized and reluctant hero. All the characters are just really cool to me, especially Roland Tembo and Eddy Carr. The darker more suspenseful tones and dangerous jungle atmosphere just really pulled me in as a kid and they haven't let me go since. I even like the little gymnastics bit Kelly does, it's set up so it doesn't come out of nowhere and it isn't unfeasible to kick a raptor out of a dilapidated window.

There wasn’t supposed to be raptors on the boat, common misconception. There was actually supposed to be a sequence showing how the Rex got loose then trapped in the cargo hold. You can’t see it but the wall opposite the severed hands has a giant hole in it. The T Rex crashed its head through and pulled out the captain (pilot? navigator? whatever the bot driver is called), hence the leftover hands. It was only storyboarded and was cut to give some suspense. There should be images of the storyboards that you can find
