About the Focus Band Octillery - it was a big meme in the Japanese Pokemon community around the time. A player used one and it was famous for coming in clutch and surviving big hits from legendaries. There was also a special Focus Band Octillery distributed in Pokemon Ranch, not sure if it released internationally though.

Ah, man. I brought my PokéWalker to work every day, and grinded to get that flying Pikachu for my in-game team. Loved that guy. When it came time for Gen 5, I traded up all of my Pokémon to the new game, but……you couldn’t transfer a Pokémon if it knew an HM. Fly was the only thing that made my Pikachu unique. Ultimately, I chose to leave him behind, and this poor special Pikachu has been maintaining his solitary vigil in my HG for well over a decade now o7 Miss you, buddy 😢

The Octillery with Focus Band is a reference to that old Pokemon Sunday show from around the time HGSS came out. There was a strict "no electronics policy" when I was in middle school, I remember my friends and I would smuggle our pokéwalkers in every day and then meet during recess so we could show off the mons' we caught and to share gifts. I distinctly remember that my one friend dropped his in gym class, and we had to sneak back in after hours to find it. I still have mine today; so when I see my old pals, we link up pokéwalkers to remember the good times. I love irl video game accessories, I wish things like the pokéwalker still existed. I remember being hyped for Pokémon Go, but it just wasn't the experience I was envisioning as some evolution of the concept.

I’ve since completed the game and gotten all the silver symbols, and I’ve now set out to complete a Pokewalker “living dex” as thoroughly as I can. I tried in the past to get the distribution trick to work and wasn’t able to figure it out, but I’m looking forward to trying again with the resources you provided. Thanks again for covering this! gosh, I'm so glad you decided to hone in on the power of time-exclusivity/inaccessibility of certain Pokemon near the end there because it really is something that I've thinking about and even appreciate lately in regards to old Pokemon games. Like it is very easy to just pass these events off as a cheap way to provide barriers for accessing certain pokemon (I certainly did) but stuff like Jirachi and surf/fly Pikachu just wouldn't feel nearly as special or elusive without that layer of simultaneous absence/presence in-game. Like imagine if they handed around Jirachis like they do with box legendary pokemon. It's a (myth)ical pokemon, it should be a question as to whether or not it exists at all in the game! Stuff like this creates timeless stories and rumors that I will cherish forever that I wish I didn't use to take for granted. Yet again another Droomish banger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@droomish1Ай бұрын
yes!!! For me, one of the best things about Pokemon, is how much a "game" exists outside of the games themselves. The memories we have as players, the experiences and times we get with other people talking and play together, and all this context that exists completely within the community. and I think you hit the nail on the head for why this intersection of things is so special in terms of story and experience. these games, and so many other like it, WILL remain magical if you hold onto it like that

It's so good to see some content around the Pokewalkers. Such genius devices honestly. I still use them (almost) daily and I am SO happy that my sisters walkers was still somehow on the event Yellow Forest route. She gave me her Pokewalker and her SoulSilver already years ago as a gift when she stopped playing Pokemon. The save file to that walker doesn't even exist anymore so the Magby on there is kinda trapped, however I will definitely let it run on the Yellow Forest route as you can luckily also send the Pokemon (including Flying Pikachu) to any other HGSS save file! Because if you press on "receive Gift" in the Pokewalker menu, you can connect it to any Pokewalker! Even walkers, that are not tied to your save file. Comes in handy if you shiny hunt with multiple walkers on one HG/SS game!

Only thing I can think of with Sableye and Chatot being featured in the Rally route is that they also include them as references to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness/Time/Sky. Although it would only be a very loose reference. Chatot is a very prominent character, but Sableye is mostly just treated as the generic henchmen of the villains. If they wanted to make the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon reference obvious, they'd pick from Grovyle, Dusknoir or Wigglytuff, but I guess they might want to keep it to Pokemon that can mostly just be found in the wild, so I guess with that Chatot is certainly a great candidate for representation and Sableye is OK.

You technically don't even need a Pokewalker to get a Surfing Pikachu in Gen 4. If you've completed all the base colosseums in Battle Revolution, you can use the points earned in the game to send a special gift Pikachu to any of the Gen 4 games that knows Volt Tackle, Surf, Tail Whip, and Thunder Wave at level 10 and holding a Light Ball. You can do this at the very beginning of the game, only requiring the Pokedex to obtain, so you can have a traded Pikachu with some good moves on your playthrough. The only problems are that it is considered a traded mon, so if it gains any levels before you beat Bugsy, it'll start disobeying, it'll always have a Hardy (neutral) nature, and that Volt Tackle, while powerful, is a high recoil move on a fragile Pokemon. I'd recommend getting it Thunderbolt asap and evolving it, which you can do around the 3rd gym thanks to the Pokeathlon and Voltorb Flip.

I went for a walk with a pokewalker and it ended up falling off at the furthest point I had walked. So when I went back to look for it, I basically had to do the same walk again

HG/SS holds such a special place in my heart, even though emerald was my first game the first game I remember hearing about before they released was HG/SS. My earliest memory watching KZbin was watching a Japanese Soul Silver playthrough.
