People praise HGSS for being oh-so good but one thing I just despise about it are the arbitrary side quests you have to do to rematch gym leaders- and even more so to trade with certain ones. I admit it’s cool seeing gym leaders get time off- but it’s almost impossible to find them without a guide or stalking them.

Ignoring the moon stone argument that plenty of other people have brought up in the comments, I'd like to argue that the rival only having 4 Pokémon for that fight is actually the strongest argument for him having both that Dugtrio and possibly even Gyrados already. Looking at the game from the rival's PoV he's surprised to see you there, this means he was not anticiaping another battle on his way out off the boat after getting cut. Combine that with his claim of having 40 Pokémon while having 2 empty slots on his team, would it not be a possible argument that his Dugtrio, and incredibly frail pokemon even with that level advantage, as well as another Pokémon are possibly fainted in the background from having just switch trained up his Kadabra?

One thing I noticed as I hunted these leaves, is that repeated initiating dialogue with your pokemon seems to annoy it. After a while of mashing A to talk, your pokemon only provides negative feedback to you (besides the shiny leaf dialogue)

10:44 You talking about your Hitmonchan reminds me of this Xatu I had in Emerald that I taught Rain Dance and Solar Beam to. This was from a playthrough when I was a kid, and so, I didn't know Rain Dance actually weakens Solar Beam - I just taught it both of those moves cuz I thought the combination sounded cool. Probably cuz they're both moves I wouldn't associate with Xatu. Interesting thing to note about the two bikes in R/S/E - I played an Emerald hack where you're given both of them, and if you try to get on the Acro Bike while you're on the Mach Bike (or vice versa), you just get off of the bike you're currently on. It's something that makes sense (at least to me) when you think about it - I assume the devs made it that way because the player can only have one bike at a time, so they assume if any bike is used from the bag while you're on one, you're trying to dismount, not swap to another bike - but the fact that the game doesn't recognize you're trying to get on a different bike, rather than get off of the one you're currently on, is something that just sticks with me. This was a great video! As you might've figured from the first part of my comment, I found myself going down memory lane and trying to remember my own childhood playthroughs of these games, as a result of hearing about yours. That really added to the video.

I had the benefit of playing FRLG for the first time when I was 12 or so (born in '99 so I'd already played through all of gen 4) and at that point I was already in the habit of saving my master ball for a roaming legendary so it was never an issue for me thank goodness

keep the masterball for roaming legendaries in all of these early games. in gen 3 there is only one of these guys per game so it is the only thing to use it on (other than rare shiny)

Mega Sceptile uses giga drain pretty frequently, and regular sceptile doesn't really see usage, so the thing about competitively built sceptile never using giga drain isn't really accurate.

It is admittedly possible that his team isn't actually incomplete in the S.S.Anne battle but instead just has his last two pokemon having fainted battling other trainers on the ship before his battle with you. This same could also be the case for most of the other battles you have with him given that you always encounter him when he is leaving the area that he ambushes you in.

Honestly, I felt less disappointment when I thought I had to fart and shat, then playing SV. Absolutely abhorrent gameplay, I have a hard time believing anyone over the age of 7 actually find it fun and engaging at all.
