The Louvre: Building a Symbol | FULL DOCUMENTARY

The Louvre is a symbol of the City of Light, one of the world’s finest museums housed in the biggest palace in Europe. Today, some 10 million visitors stroll through its 14 kilometres of galleries and corridors, carefully laid out to contemplate more than 40,000 works of art. The museum covers 210,000m2, has 22 escalators, 75 elevators, and more than 10,000 steps. And yet, the Louvre was originally simply a fortress built to protect the capital.
What were the main changes which transformed this chateau into a museum over the past 800 years? And how did the Louvre’s pyramid come about - this soaring structure of 95 tons of steel and 673 glass rhomboids designed by the visionary architect, Ieoh Ming Pei?

I appreciated learning about the history of this iconic structure. The movement from a military installation to a royal palace used only by the elite to a building devoted to the public access of art seems like an enlightened trajectory for humanity. That many of the works were stolen from their original countries of origin is something that needs a modernization of values just as the building are being renovated to reflect modern needs and uses. What I enjoy most is the ethos of art and architecture as mutually supporting expressions of human creativity and engineering. France’s devotion to creating and maintaining this nexus for humanity deserves more appreciation. This documentary helps serve that need. Thank you! ❤

@@maryhirsch7170 the Louvre museum in Paris France has been getting added to since its creation. The pyramids are a valuable part of the louvres architectural history and evolution. To make the Louvre a stagnant building that does not change would go against its history as the building has been changing constantly.
