I wish I could remember who said it, but my favorite description of Fontainebleau's effect upon completion is that of a "chance meeting of a group of chateaux in a forest." I also love the idea it being the family home of France's monarchs. We're lucky so much survived the revolution.

Just a simple historical detail: at min. 24:32 King Francois I is defined "grandfather" of King Henri IV. This is not really correct, Francois I was the grandfather of Henri IV's wife, Marguerite de Valois who was the daughter of Henri II (son of Francois I and Caterina de' Medici). Therefore Francois I was the grandfather of Marguerite and had no direct genealogical connection with Francois I
@davidkwok9199

Catherine de Médicis was the wife of Henri 2, not Francois 1er Your last line: direct connection with Henri 4
@robertonatanrobotti909
@robertonatanrobotti909 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, maybe I was not clear enough, I just pointed out that Francois I was the grandfather of Marguerite de Valois according to the blood lineage. This is the succession: Francois I+Claude de France= Henri II. Henri II + Caterina de Medici= Marguerite de Valois who married Henri de Bourbon. Therefore according to the blood line Francois I was the grandfather of Marguerite. The fact that Marguerite de Valois married Henri de Bourbon doesn't make Francois I (house of Valois) grandfather of Henri IV (house of Bourbon)

@@robertonatanrobotti909 You were clear but have a look at your first message, because you wrote : "Therefore Francois I was the grandfather of Marguerite and had no direct genealogical connection with Francois I". I think you meant Henri IV instead of François Ier at the end, right ? 😉 That's what David pointed.
@robertonatanrobotti909
@robertonatanrobotti909 Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is what I meant, thank you for pointing out my mistake. Just to be clearer: Francois I (Valois) was the fater of Henry II (Valois). Marguerite (Valois) was the daughter of Henry II (Valois) and married Henry IV (Bourbon). Therefore Francois I (Valois) couldn't be the grandfather of Henry IV (Bourbon) not having a direg blood lineage. Best regards@@heliedecastanet1882

Francois 1er did not show “strength of character” after his imprisonment in Madrid. Instead, he sent his two sons there in his stead. He didn’t abide by his agreement, and his boys were stuck there for years.

To be fair I think this would be an exception for its time, the houses of commoners in this period were probably little more than hovels, but those didnt survive. We likely see a biased selection of only the "good" buildings that were either well built or well preserved.

Which King are you referring to? Versailles was already being used as a hunting lodge, before Louis XIV embarked on his grand scheme for building a much more grand Palace, in its place. The King did not want to live in Paris, so Versailles came into being.
@LUIS-ox1bv

@@Malik_Sylvus The French Revolution was not brought about by costly Chateaux. This is rank nonsense. If the French wanted to rid themselves of Monarchy, AND palaces and Chateux, they would have done so, yet both survived the Revolution, because Monarchy returned, ( for a while, at least) and the palaces remain. Thinking that the French Revolution was brought about by hungry peasants is about as accurate as believing that lead pipes brought about the demise of ancient Rome.

@@Malik_Sylvus French are brainwashed to think that 14th of July 1789 is the national day, the " Bastille day" while it is the federation day of the 14th of July 1790 when the people of France gathered in Paris to cheer the Kind returns whom had a huge festivity for its people, starting with a march show with his army for its people. The revolution of 1789 was just made by a tiny group of Parisian who wanted the king to see how difficult life was in Paris with the hope that he would do something to change that. But from 1791greedy men who wanted to take power for themselves under the name of democracy used this tension to create a real revolution that brought terror in France for years. Nothing to do with poverty and chateaux

It wasn't the labour of one king. Nor the labour of many kings: it was the backbreaking labour of hundreds of thousands of peasants and servants and poorly paid artisans, fulfilling the insatiable appetites of monarchs and megalomaniacs, paid for by the taxes of their citizens.

Without VISION nothing would be built ...of quality or beauty. You have to wonder whether the splendor of French palaces, the example they set to the nobility (who wished to emulate them to a degree), the effect on public policy focus and their costs to the population's welfare, were such, that a revolution was inevitable?
