This theme song was as good as the show. I loved it, and watched it when it premiered, and all through the years until it was canceled. I was 17, and a senior when it first premiered. Most of the guests on the show were popular stars at that time. Some celebs said it was an honor to be on that show. Those wonderful, simplistic 1970s and 1980s!! (Sigh)

I guess that explains why as a kid I only knew Paul Williams because he was on Love Boat a few times. As weird as this sounds I can totally see how this came from the same brain as the Carpenters song “We’ve only just begun...to live...” “Love...exciting and new” “White lace and promises” “Come aboard...” It’s kind of the same?

I remember watching the Love Boat (and Fantasy Island following it) on a regular basis every Saturday night back in the early-mid 1980s when they were still originally on the air. There was something so COMFORTING and SOOTHING about the opening theme as well as each and every episode. Entertaining too. Escapist fantasy was just the right kind of formula that I needed and just perfect for a saturday night after a whole week of stressful nonsense. But the fact that i watched and loved the love boat was my MOST closely guarded and BIGGEST well kept secret at the time. Because a teenaged boy simply did NOT admit to his fellow teens about watching love boat as well as being a fan of that show. Not unless he wanted to be the target of ridicule. There were many tv shows around that time a teen could openly admit to being a fan of. But The Love Boat wasnt one of them.

Jack Jones went hard with singing the theme. The theme alone gets you excited to watch. That's a lost art these days for film and television and music. Back then, the music went hand and hand with the vision, so you loved the whole thing, and everyone benefited because the project was successful all the way around. Now, they try to compete for the biggest audience on the same project and it causes the entire project to fall out of step.

Someone said, hey let's bring back Love American Style, but on a boat! Yeah, that's a great idea! And it was a great idea and no one seemed to notice or care, it was Love American Style retooled!

I didn't think there were many LB episodes I haven't seen, but while I recall both Allen Ludden & Betty White on the show, I don't remember them on it together, and I also don't remember The Village People either. Maybe I can catch this one when it comes around on MeTV soon.
