Dave Huxtable explores the power of language and how languages bridges cultures. Cultural diplomat Dave Huxtable loves language and espouses language learning for the sheer pleasure it brings. Throughout his life, he has mastered ten languages…so far. He challenges the notions that learning a foreign language is difficult and that is requires special talent. Dave champions foreign language training for improved global understanding, neurological health, and optimum cognitive function. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

11:37 Swahili - A very beautiful language from East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, parts of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Madagascar and the Comoros. The language carries some famous words like Hakuna Matata - no worries, Safari - journey, Rafiki - friend, Pumba - foolish, Simba - lion and Moto Moto from a movie Madagascar 2 which means Hot Hot!. It is also home to a beautiful theme song of Get Out movie written by Jordan Peele ‘Sikiliza kwa wahenga’ meaning listen to your ancestors Thank you for reading - Asante sana

@Panel I'm sad to hear that. All languages have the capacity for sophistication. English, for example, used to be a peasant language at a time when all the educated people in England spoke Norman French.

Hello!, I'm a native Spanish speaker, and I'm looking for a native English speaker to speak with frequently, in both languages, via Discord, Skype, or other, to improve our speaking skills. If there is someone interested, we can fix something.

(transitive) To learn to a high degree of proficiency. It took her years to master the art of needlecraft. Their word, not mine, but the meaning does exist. In Spanish, you can 'dominar un idioma''.

@@DaveHuxtableLanguages That's my point. 나는 한국어를 좀 알아요. E conosco un po' l'italiano. But, I would never say that I have mastered anything, because. clearly, the word has a different meaning for me than it does for you. Oops. Sorry. You said it was someone else's word, not yours? Who? Seems you haven't even mastered English, because I don't know what you are talking about. And this is exactly the problem. There is no such thing as 'mastering' a language. I'm a native English speaker and I am frequently seeing new English words. I can pretty much express any thought I have in Korean, but the natives still think I don't sound native and I still have no idea why they would choose to have social status mandatorily incorporated into their grammatical and lexical system. I'm certain you are a very clever man that has spent much time learning many languages. I am very envious. But, I am sick of the over-simplification of second language learning that pervades media. Learning a second language is NOT easy. And to the extent that we can learn it, it doesn't suddenly make us feel like a native. The cultural differences remain. Philosophical and world view differences remain. Everyone learning all of the world's languages is impossible. All of the world learning one language is logical.

At 9:38 there is a serious mistake! In Polish we do have ą ę ł but the other ones do not exist in our language!! We do not have them in the alphabet. Also, ł is not a vowel.
