Dr George Papanicolaou was the inventor of the ‘Pap smear’ test which can detect early cancerous cells in the cervix and has saved millions of women’s lives. But it took a long time for the medical community to accept his research.

Dr Pap was helped by his wife who, as well as providing emotional support, took a smear test every day for 20 years to provide him with more evidence.
Witness History spoke to the couple’s great niece, Olga Stamatiou.

It's amazing that thanks to these two people we have away to benefit to getting better health and get the right treatment in case we did have cancer.

Poor woman she is a saint. She knows her role and she should be so proud. Stand tall. Behind a great man is a great woman

@@intuitivediane find the last phrase very heteronormative and feels a touch sexist so I don't love that expression but I take your point -I was speaking as someone with vaginismus and a tilted pelvis -smear tests are genuinely traumatic and feel like torture to me -I understand that is a specific experience -but I kind of couldn't think of anything worse then having to have a smear test every day for me -the thought of what she went through seemed really horrific -I understand smear tests are not traumatic for most people and my experience of them is extreme and that colours my perspective/the lense through which I see things -I was sort of horrified by what she went through! I am glad though that she is being honoured and remembered and being given the credit now though that she deserves for her personal sacrifice
