The "Serra Morenica di Ivrea" is a morainic relief of glacial origin, part of the larger Morainic Amphitheater. It was created in the Quaternary period by the transport of sediments operated during the glaciations towards the Po Valley by the huge glacier that resided and flowed along the valley of the current Dora Baltea.
It extends from the territory of Andrate (in the province of Turin) to the gates of Cavaglià (in the province of Biella), Alice Castello and Borgo D'Ale (in the province of Vercelli), and, moreover, it is the largest formation of this type existing in Europe nowadays.
Straddling this long line that extends for about 20 kilometers and even rises 600m at the maximum point, there are uncontaminated areas where nature reigns supreme and where there are various lacustrine formations. In addition to the most famous Lake Viverone, there are a series of other 5 lakes, located further north, smaller in size, but characterized by pure and wild beauty.
The names of the lakes that make up the mentioned quintet are: Lake Sirio, Lake Pistono (also called Lake of Montalto), Lake Nero, Lake of Campagna and Lake San Michele.
Within the area of the lakes of Ivrea there is also a curious wooded area called "Terre Ballerine" (dancing soil). The name derives from the peculiar conformation of the ground, characterized by a very high elasticity: if you try to jump on this terrain, the vegetation and the ground itself undulate giving the impression of dancing.
