The Lovin' Spoonful had just come off a 19-day tour of the American South with the Supremes, which ran from November 10 to 28. On the second-to-last day of the tour, and therefore only a few days before this was filmed, John Sebastian composed "Daydream" on the tour bus travelling through North Carolina.
As far as I can tell, this is one of the only examples of the band's original lineup playing live. The February 1965 Night Owl recording (also on my channel) features Jan Carl on drums. Whenever the band appeared on TV, they generally either mimed to the record or they sang live vocals over the original backing track. The only other case I have found of the band playing their instruments live is their March 19, 1967 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, where they played both "Daydream" and "Bald Headed Lena". On their other Ed Sullivan appearances, the band simply mimed.
The song heard at the beginning is probably the greatest unreleased single from the 1960s, "This Could Be the Night" by the Modern Folk Quartet. Phil Spector had wanted to break into the folk-rock scene and considered producing the Lovin' Spoonful, but it never happened. In Steve Boone's autobiography, he says the Spoonful turned him down, but in Mark Ribowsky's biography of Spector, He's a Rebel, he quotes Vini Poncia as saying that it was Spector who passed on the Spoonful. In any case, Spector took on the Modern Folk Quartet and produced "This Could Be the Night", but other than appearing at the start of this film, the song did not come out until a decade later.
