The Low Workbench 2.0 - A Mini Woodworking Bench with Lots of Features

Here is my new mini workbench, a combination of the first version and the lately planing board I did. Now it includes almost all the features I need in one tool, surface planing against planing stops or between bench dogs, straight edge planing, which can be used for both Western and Japanese planes, and a vise.
It can be either clamped to an existing table or bench, or can work well too above friction pads, when not too much force is needed.
Plans and ready made workbenches available on my store here www.adrianpreda.com/shop

I bought your plans a week or so ago, literally stumbled into some perfect wood when picking up a used scraper. Bumped into the guy's project wood he was selling (didn't know) and hit a slab of ash, perfect size. Snagged a teak slab too. Gonna mod your plans, add a moxon vise on one side, and the bench will be a little wider (10-11"). It'll have a 7 1/2 " ash centre sandwiched with 1.5" teak, ash feet and probably teak for the moxon and edge planing guide. I'm really looking forward to making this bench. Thanks for the plans and inspiration!

@@BenKingEagles Do you have a picture of the finished project? Would love to see how it turned out.
@BenKingEagles
@BenKingEagles 4 жыл бұрын
@@sjenmax It isn't finished yet, been spreading myself a little thin of late. Here's a link for a pic I threw together: photos.app.goo.gl/osG49DKipjS6AsKh6 I don't want to make this too complicated, but I want something useful enough for me to be able to work inside without needing to switch to my balcony for single tasks. So far I've been using it to build a Krenov Plane and I've been happy. Notes and to-do: - I have a brass rod coming which I will cut into dogs and add a diy magnetic pop up mechanism. I'm fiddling with click pens to see what will work best; I'm basically going to copy the Lee Valley magnetic pop up dogs as mush as I can. - The vise has been faced with alder (I think, it's a scrap of unknown origin) and leather attached to both faces using 2-sided carpet tape. It's a tiny detail, not really noticeable, but the dog in the vise face is mahogany and birdseye maple, more scraps. - I am trying to design legs that can rotate and be tightened with a cammed lever so I'm looking at the lever and post for front bicycle wheels. The lever would sit recessed in the bottom of the foot, with the post extending up the leg. I think the easiest method would just be to cut the top of the leg at an angle, so that the lever pulls the top slice down and the angle causes it to bind on the walls of the recess. - I need to sort out the moxon and planing guide. I'll likely put them on opposite sides. - The moxon vise needed some thought: I need good screws on a budget. I saved the vise screws from an old Workmate bench; it was far cheaper than trying to source acme threaded rods.
@BenKingEagles
@BenKingEagles 4 жыл бұрын
@01yala there's not much that's changed. I've got 2 feet on it, just teak blocks, while I fiddle with designing the rotating legs. The brass rod never arrived so I've gotta find a different source. And no moxon vise yet. I have way too much on my plate right now so I can't say when I'll make any large progress. Thanks for the interest tho. When I do work on it I'll try and remember to shoot you a reply

@@BenKingEagles I bow. So far the doodles in my head are using milk crates (that, uh, we just happen to have sitting on the balcony) at the base for my {eventual} seated work bench. Create the bench as something that registers off the milk-crates for a tight fit. Make this thing completely portable - i.e. working in deserted office parking lots on the weekends Carry a minimal kit of saws, planes, chisels and such in a re-engineered med sized suitcase on wheels. The table top (with a refurbished vice) can be stored vertically in a closet, with the tool suit-case right beside it with the basic hand-tools to do the job. And if you want to get all fancy... get one of those Jackery-type Lithium Battery systems. Get a portable battery system that can run 120 drill and saw (that way you don't bug the neighbours with sound complaints) Which is also a useful set-up to have at the ready... if you just happen to have friends who live in the country... and you offer to help cook something for supper... Check out Rex Krueger's videos on how to create a 30$ {'Roman} Work Bench". I love it when good ideas overlap. Thank you Youze Tubes algorithm for 'randomly' popping this vid into my eyesight... - Cathy (&, accidentally, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

@AdrianPreda
@AdrianPreda 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Cris! Ahh, still a lot to work to reach your videos level :) Yes, that jig is very useful. Just that I've made it with 3mm thick strips so I don't have too much intermediate range. 1mm ones will do better, maybe from plastic sheets, similar to the commercial one that Veritas sells.
@AdrianPreda
@AdrianPreda 6 жыл бұрын
When you clamp in the vise a small piece, on one side of the jaw, the other side will have no support, so it will bend/twist/rack, so the vise's thread ane rods will break in time. With that you distribute the force equally

Thank you! Yes, is mostly for edge planing, but if I keep the stops squared to the side can shoot 90 deg too, but I prefer using the dedicated shooting board, cause here with too much shocks can destroy those sliding dovetails stops
