The murder of Morgan Earp was a key part of the feud that represents one of the most famous stories of the American Wild West. Yet we know comparatively little about Morgan himself, whose life was not nearly as well documented as that of his famous brother.

As a kid in the UK during the 50's Wyatt Earp and the gunfight at the OK corral were a big part of Tv and movie entertainment. I eventually got to Tombstone in Sept 1998 and it was was probably the most surreal experience I've ever had, and I live in Wales with churches and castles just a few miles away, many hundreds of years older than the USA! But to walk the streets and dine where the Earps did was an experience I will never forget. Thanks for a bit of background which had not been covered until now.

In between meetings at the Fort, several of us drove over to Tombstone one evening since dinner options in Sierra Vista were limited (this was in the 1990s). Surreal is correct. The bars were still open with some tough looking gents Colts strapped on sitting at the bar. We didn't know if they were actors or locals and the whole experience was very eerie as we walked the streets. In the end, we decided to head back to our hotels and grab some crackers from one of the machines.

I'm an Australian who got to Tombstone. Not much going on there now I'm afraid, there was a dodgy dummy setup on the claimed sight of the fight, and upon leaving my mate and I had our car torn apart by border patrol because they thought we where running drugs from Mexico. All in all the best trip I have ever done that one across America in my $700 Subaru

@@RogueDragon05 I don't remember that plot, but I was married by then and raising a family meant more work and less TV. I remember the Star Trek episode "Spectre of the Gun" set in Tombstone where the crew are the Calton gang. I have on HD DVD, rand watched it again a few weeks ago. Here's a bit of historical firearms trivia. The pistol pictured in the video clip from the movie is a Ruger Vaquero with the birds head grip. The black Phoenix of the grip panel medallion indicates that this example was built between 1993 when this model was released and 1997. The original Phoenix was red as designed by Sturm in 1947. Upon Sturm's death in 1951, Bill Ruger changed the color to black in memory of his friend. The red Phoenix was resurrected in 1997 for the 50th anniversary of their first pistol.

Thank you for remembering, reminding and retelling the dusty pages past who may never be touched again. You are my books. It's hard for me to read. @@wbl5649 Unfortunately my Great plus Uncle allegedly took part in the massacre. A 9 year old girl identified him as the man who killed her family. His side of the story as told by descendants was that he played sick, staying home so he didn't have to go. I wish I could find more information about it. His name was David Tullis. He's honored with a plaque on a history marker where he help to build the first Mormon settlements near the cemetery where he's buried. He came to America with his family from Scotland in 1858 landing in St. Louis off the Mississippi. According to my Grandfather (whose Grandfather was his younger brother Alexander) he ran off with the Mormon wagon train "chasing skirts". He helped build, then once he had his own home he married a widow with a young daughter who he also later married and fathered several children. The Morman family history says he came to White County Illinois to visit his family once but found no inheritance and never returned. However some of his descendants visited and presented my Grandfather with a copy of the Tullis family tree in the 1970's. I actually remember that visit. I have many Mormon cousins I have never met out west. In the photos of David's family online, one of his Sons bares a striking resemblance to my Grandfather. I've always wondered if any of my distant cousins look like me.

I lived in Tombstone AZ from 2000-2003. I found your dive into the background of Morgan Earp interesting and insightful. After all, he made a major contribution to the continued longevity of Tombstone by getting killed there and being an Earp brother. And Tombstone the town too tough to die, won't likely do so even without silver mines. They mine the pockets of tourists. And people still argue about what happened on 10-26-1881.

The whole Earp/cow-boys saga never gets old for me. I've read many an account, as well as countless documentaries on this subject. Opinions have so colored the events that it can be difficult to sift through it all for the actual facts. And then because of movies and television shows, pure fiction has also filtered into the story. All I know is this story will forever be a part of our national story. Part of the myth and legend of the Wild West. Thank you for this wonderful story. Cheers!

Visited Tombstone last year. I highly recommend a visit to that town. It was so much fun and full of Western frontier history. The Bird Cage Saloon/brothel was a fun place to visit and preserved in it's original condition. Many era artifacts to be seen. Silver mining equipment to view. Lots of great old buildings. A fire, soon after the famous gun fight, destroyed in 1882 much of the town, but not all. Most was rebuilt. We met a lady in one of the buildings that claimed that we were standing on the very spot where Morgan was murdered. Such a fun place with so many artifacts. Boot Hill, just outside of town, has many historical characters there. I have always found it interesting that Doc Holiday, a southerner from Georgia, was a close friend of the Earps, especially Wyatt. There was, of course, lots of hostility so soon after the Civil War. Apparently, Doc respected the Earps due to some previous incident that had occurred?? In any case he was instrumental at the shootout at OK corral.

I don’t live too far from Tombstone. It is cool but it is exactly as ruined by tourist fishing as you would assume it would be. There is one museum in particular called the Gunfighter Hall of Fame you can burn multiple hours reading the notes beside objects behind glass. That was the coolest part of the trip. You have to pay to see the gunfight reenactments and they take place in a cheesy fake town setup on the edge of town. They do not shoot blanks in the street anymore. The cemetery was a 5/10. They offer a brochure with information on the people who are buried there and how they died. If you can find the brochure online, that is 95% of the experience. So if you love the history and happen to be driving through AZ anyways, go ahead and designate about three hours there. Visit the Gunfighter Hall of Fame, walk the street, buy something to support one of the local businesses, check out the Birdcage Theater’s front room, and you’ve basically experienced the place.

For people who can handle the heat, I find it is best to just go in summer, when it is mostly locals and people from other hot places in Arizona (like Tucson, where I am) looking to escape the heat just a little. It is how I visit and avoid the swarms of tourists and get to sip my sarsaparilla and enjoy the actual history things in peace and at my own pace. It is like an anti-tourist ward and I love it. It is when I go to things in and around Tucson too. BTW, do you know if Les Moore was ever a real person or if that was wholly a fake tombstone?

The only other thing I will say is that the tombstone movie with Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, and Val kilmer is the best one as far as I'm concerned. After escaping death 2 times this way, father decided to jump ship in New York. Caught and with coercion he was inducted into the US Army April, 1943 or get sent back to Hong Kong. Thanks for giving Morgan Earp his "due". Speaking of Arizona, have you ever done a video on Charles Debrille Poston (the "father of the Arizona")? He was quite a character, who seems to have been forgotten by even people in Arizona. He left his wife and family behind in Kentucky to seek his fortune in Arizona and never returned (and never made a fortune). After his time in Arizona, he travelled the world on behalf of the US government, founded his own religion honoring the sun, and died old and penniless in Phoenix (interestingly living next door to the Goldwaters). He once expressed his anger about something said in the local newspaper by firing his pistol into a crowded saloon - fortunately not hitting anyone. But no one ever criticized him in public again.

Lived in the West for many years. Only in the rural areas do you get a sense of the Frontier. Fort Sumner, NM, Pecos, Texas, Fort McKaviitt, Texas, the Presidio de San Sabá near Menard, Texas, Fort Meade, South Dakota, Sheridan, Wyoming, have stories to tell.

I submit that justice was served, just not by the Law. I think Wyatt saw then, as now, that our legal system rarely results in justice, and is usually complicit in injustice.

Attended some meetings at the Fort in the 90's. A couple of us decided to drive over to Tombstone for dinner - there wasn't much in Sierra Vista then. Place was spooky. We walked the streets just before dusk and a couple of bars were open with some gents (Colts strapped on) sitting at the bar and not saying a word. Didn't know if a show had ended or we would be in real trouble if we went in. Went back to the motel and got crackers out of the machine.

I knew Lee Silva personally , whom you mentioned and remember when he was writing the book about Wyatt Earp, it took years for him to complete it, traveling all over the country to do so. A real character himself a book could be written about himself.

Tombstone, AZ, is worth a visit. Was last there about 5 years ago. Yes, there's some of the expected tourist traps, but not as much as one might think. I found the after-hours tours by locals to be the most interesting, though I'd take their word with a grain of salt. I'm not saying I necessarily doubt anyone's perspective, but I do find it interesting the hard feelings over the Earp-Clanton factions that still reside today.

The Earp's won and got to shape the history. They ran gambling games and offered protection of madam's and bordello's. Not a low professions at the time and place they happened but face it. They were pimps and a strong arm for hire. This was a time when people walked both sided of the law and any are known by which side they met their end on. Few "lawmen" of that era could be completely clean. There were a few, but few. All we can do at this point in history is try to put the truth together but it is quite hard as much has been erased.

Ironic Wyatt and his group were able to hunt down everyone suspected in the murder of Morgan except for the strongest suspect Pete Spence. Either Spence was really lucky or Wyatt concluded he didn't do it. Then again this whole bloody mess is riddled in mystery and ambiguity.

That is a fair question. The jurisdiction between the US Marshal, county sheriff’s, town marshals, and various detectives working for corporations, was always at question. Virgil was both a deputy US Marshal and Tombstone’s Town marshal/chief of police at the same time. Wyatt was a deputy county sheriff and also a Wells Fargo detective before being appointed a deputy US Marshal. The Earp brothers were frequently deputized, sometimes aa part of a posse, and other times as “special officers.” Johnny Behan was the Cochise county sheriff, and occasionally deputized members of the cowboys. During the vendetta ride Wyatt led a federal posse as a Deputy US Marshal, while being pursued by a posse under Behan. While there were courts, judges and justices were more often than not associated with one side or the other. It was rarely clear who represented “the law.”

“…no less moral than the banking business.” Gafaw! Actually I’d say prostitution is quite a bit more moral. The ladies, generally, don’t try to profit off your deposits.
